Using MtG to describe your playstyle

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Tue Nov 24, 2020 8:07 am

Post by Alisae »

So, I saw Taly's thread which was a nice way to describe a playstyle and this is sort of a response to that. I feel like using the Magic the Gathering colors is the best way to describe your own playstyle due to how well the MtG colors embody strategical approaches to the games. If you kind of don't really know how to describe how you want to win the game, this will help you describe your own playstyle and help you realize what approach to the game is best for you.

I have never played Magic but MathBlade tried to teach it to me awhile ago, and while I was never really hooked on the game and I would rather play yugioh, I feel like I have a grasp on how each color wants to win the game.

So what are the colors and how does each color want to win the game.

Red
wants to win the game through aggression. As a red player, you want to rely on your aggression to be able to force the other players to get what you want. Generally speaking, this strategy is a great strategy early in the game but it can run out of gas later in the game. If a red player does have a late game, that late game is going to be rather volatile late game that was able to be reached due to the tempo gained in the early-mid game. You want to narrow down the interactions in the game and win before your opponent can do anything or make what they are trying to do irrelevant because that's not the angle you're fighting on.

Blue
wants to win the game via control and superior resource management. Essentially, what a blue player wants to do, is they want to be able to lock other players inside a cage and starve them of their own resources. The blue player makes an attempt to understand and account everything before it happens and have answers ready. A blue player doesn't want to kill you unlike a red player, but rather a blue player just wants to make you concede. Blue doesn't want to win the game but rather not lose. Generally this would be scaling color.

Green
wants to win the game via getting to a very specific point in the game or by enabling and setting up your teammates for success. Basically, they're the supports. Within the game of mafia, if you are playing in a way where you help your teammates become as succesful as possible and try to support your teammates, then that classifies as green.
I'm not sure how to explain the first point within the game of mafia, because while in games like in Magic green will be able to drop cards that cost more earlier then the other decks and in league of legends, you'll generally find that most support champions are classified under green due to their items being significantly cheaper.

Black
wants to win by meeting certain conditions. I feel like these categories of players are where you would find the hypercarries or ego players. Big personalities that basically warp the gamestate just by existing and they require the game to accomidate to their existance. If black players can't do this, they're going to suffer a lot. If a Black player is put in an environment where they can thrive, its super good, if not, its super bad.

White
wants to win the game by using a vast amount of tactics. They can bend the other colors to their will and generall are extremely well rounded, however their problem lies in that they don't accel in anything. They can do many things as a player, but in certain games, they are going to have 1 clear role to play. They are being used because while they can do many things, there is a certain thing that is required of them to do and thats what they end up doing. They're a JOAT but a master of one. They're capable of many different things but only one at a time. EDIT: When I showed this to Isis, Isis on discord described white as "the player that never catches a deepwolf"

I feel like
Red
/
Blue
are the main primary strategical approaches to the game of mafia and
Green
/
Black
are more supportive colors.
White
is a more neutral color.
However there are more supportive colors as well and these are generally what makes a player's playstyle unique. The Primary colors are the when that player is best, and the supportive colors are how they play. I feel like its important to note that generally speaking, most players will be either
Red
or
Blue
, but there may be some unique cases where another player may be
Green
,
Black
, or
White
.

I'm colorless, in that I don't really have a plan for how I play.

It's colorless, in that there is no plan, while White has some underlying structure to what they're doing. What that structure looks like is unknown, but there still is one.

Green
fits me most in any given state. I'm very savvy at spewing to others while acquiring information from them, I am generally a team player and I'm perceptive about the progression of those I townread, want to work with in the game, or my partners whether they're hoods, hydra heads, or scum.

I want to say
White
in times where I am not so mindmelding and la-de-da'ing with the plist.
Blue/Red
are situationally truthful but usually when the first two strategic approaches are gone and my sanity has drastically fallen in a game, haha.

Black
is sometimes what I want to be but I ultimately don't have the inherent desire or need to control the environment of the game. I'm much better and more comfortable at adapting to the game than changing it to my will.

also lovely thread

The problem with these categories is that I am all of them in different games. I never display all of them at once in the same game. But in any given game, I can be like 3-4 of them, and then in a different game, be a different 3-4 of them, and then in a third game, be yet another different combination of 3-4 of them. That's not really White, because as described, never catching deepscum? I do, but not always; I am capable of many things as described for White, but not restricted to just one at a time. 2-3 at a time, sure, but not just one.

I disagree.
What Isis said to me over discord was moreso a reaction and I don't think its impossible for White to catch deepwolves. Its just not as likely. I just included it because I thought it was funny and it kinda suits?
I think you are definitively white with maybe some black
You very much so come across as a JOAT master of (n)one

Green, White, Red don't really suit you.

none. Bad isn't a strategical approach to the game of mafia. And this concept isn't about quality.
If you feel like you don't suit any of the colors or are colorless like Jake, try approaching a game from the mindset of a color.

Reading this deeply now, I am probably as close to mono blue as you will find. I think I agree with Infinity that I probably have more green in me than red. I thought maybe I had some red because I tunnel on scum when I feel like I've caught them, but the way that I tunnel is by giving them space to breath, countering all their arguments, and getting all my town reads to vote them with me and I think that is actually just blue still

Edit: also mono blue is one of my favorite MtG decks along with monowhite lifegain which is like if white was actually blue
