Isis by your logic wouldn't vanilla cop never show vanilla if you ever chose a role? If there's a vanilla cop it definitely shouldn't work that way

There's an argument to be made that rolecop and vanilla cop could be variant versions of the role instead of actual rolecop/vanilla cop for this setup.

I would say from a game design stance only having the benefits of the role until it's used makes players actively choose more, which I think is probably a good way to lean on a design like this. Either way would be fine as long as it's consistent though.
This is a Parachute.

It really depends on whether you think of it as a role modifier or as a JOAT shot. This is from the doctor wiki:
In Mafia hands, the Doctor role has an additional, unrelated effect: a Mafia Doctor kills without the use of a gun, and thus a Gunsmith will not see a gun when investigating a Mafia Doctor. (This effect does not occur if a Mafia member gains access to a Doctor action via some other means, e.g. a Jack of All Trades role.)

I realized that my version works unintuitively if you take a night x doctor, so I'm now ambivalent.

If we go with my system then isis's version of rolecop could be called a draft cop since it sees every role a player has drafted.

Yeah you can just fix this problem by creating roles that work each way. "Role tracker" is close enough for my version of rolecop (I've seen role watcher in a normal)

well, this is not my setup, so do what you think is best really, but originially, drafting was basically obtaining the role, so for instance, a rolecop would see you as a 1-shot doc / a gunsmith would get a negative even after use

Ok I think that leads to the least confusing outcomes as long as you accept that initial premise, so let's stick with that.

As I mentioned in the game, the core mechanic is town-sided and the setup needs to be balanced around more than just potential roles. If a town member gets something good in their pack like a specific night investigation and pass that on, then the next person is allowed to use their ability, that signals that the first person is more likely to be town as well. Consider that this can happen in multiple places in the same game with varying strengths.

The game we played felt like it had too many investigative roles as well.

I think I'm the first person to jump in and say that this overall mechanic is very reminiscent of popular card games such as Sushi Go and 7 Wonders.

Given that, I think I'm also the first to notice what this version of the mechanic is notably missing: cards that only work in combination with other cards.

Some obvious examples come to mind (easily tweaked until balanced)
- 1/2 of a full doctor role (gather two, you gain the full doctor role; until then, this does not affect your role)
- 1/3 of a vig role (you better hope there's 2 more out there, that don't get snatched up)
- Shot doubler/increaser (doubles/adds +1 to the shots of the next role you take; if that's vanilla, tough luck)
- Jailkeeper + card canceler (you're a jailkeeper, but all other past and future cards you took/take become vanillas)

Etc.

It seems so far this revolutionary idea (mafia + card drafting) has only gone as far as mafia has gone in the past. But card drafting games are popular, and have lots to contribute here!
Hey all! Excited and nervous to play my first game with you!

That is a super cool idea, would make for a great expansion or something as long as you get the proportions right
