I forgot about this but since it was used in team mafia i wanted to push for it now that its over

I don't think this should be a controversial rule.

edit: for those that don't know what vocaroos are, they are a way to upload voice clips similar to how imgur is a site to upload images.

should be explicitly mentioned in the signups then - but 100% banned from stuff like normals + normal adjacent events like team mafia

i dont think so. but regardless an external post should not be allowed anyways, embed images and youtube links being the extent allowed.

yeah i mean it just WAS used during team mafia 2021 so its one of those things that was never formally banned and thus technically legal

i'm not always able to listen to audio while i'm playing (e.g. if i'm in phoneposting in public and i'm without my earbuds, there's probably other scenarios for other people), spoken english is definitely more difficult to understand for me than written english, and i would 100% rather die in-game than have to prove myself town by making a vocaroo

thats extra mod work potentially and then the mod also may fall into the categories listed in why it should be not allowed so not a good solution logistically

it still adds another source of reading the person making the vocaroo (intonation of their voice, word choice when talking, talking speed etc) which (1) isn't always accessible to all other players (if they can't listen to it for whatever reason) and (2) just shouldn't take place in a text-based mafia game imo

i think they are good fun but yeah i would support a de facto ban

that said it's sort of a non-issue imo it's really just a handful of EM people who use these things. i really don't see them taking off on this site. EM was very (and i say this lovingly) weird and insular and i think the like multimedia presentations we ended up doing there were pretty context-specific

honestly the most annoying part about vocaroos was after they got really popular on EM people just started dropping serious 10+ min vocaroos with no transcript cuz they were lazy and you'd have to sit and listen to people ramble incoherently about their reads which is like fine for a vc mafia game but if you sign up for forum mafia you expect to play something text-based

it seems like there's sort of a grey area rn so my suggestion is ban them for normal / normal-adjacent / competitive-oriented games and let hosts specify in setup details if they want to allow them.

vocaroos / youtube vids / tiktoks all that kinda stuff can be a blast, but really only as long as ppl aren't taking them too seriously

the difference between vocaroo and generic youtube/other videos is that vocaroos include the tone of the player

it creates an extra layer of solving that shouldn't be there imo

I’m inclined to say that if it’s a rule that you can’t lie about your transcript if you do it then mods wouldn’t have to worry about checking each vocaroo vs transcript

I think the main thing is that I think the option of adding like a short voice clip is amusing in the same way someone linking to gifs/vids etc is

If someone is trying to play a whole game through it then that’s weird and probably not allowable

But I was thinking having to write out a transcript (time consuming) is a pretty strong disincentive to say more than like a sentence or so
