Non-Standard Voting Mechanics Discussion Thread

This thread was created for the purpose of discussing non-standard voting mechanics in Mafia and Mafia-adjacent games.

By default, the standard of voting is

simple majority, instant resolve

, with which votes resolve on a simple majority (

50% * players alive = vote number needed to reach majority. Once hammer is cast the vote resolves "instantly" — no additional votes can be cast, uncast, or recast.

However, it would be a crime to not acknowledge other methods of nomination in Mafia games, for instance (named by myself, not official names):

King

One player is "King" and possesses the sole eliminating vote.

Timeout Plural

Once a specified deadline is reached, the highest vote-getter is eliminated. Ties may be resolved with a no-elim.

First to X Plurality

Once a specified deadline is reached, the highest vote-getter is eliminated. Ties are resolved in favor of whoever received their last vote first.

Compulsive Elimination

Once a specified deadline is reached, the highest vote-getter is eliminated. Ties are resolved in favor of whoever received their last vote first. Voting No Elimination is not allowed.

Compulsive Voting

Everyone starts the day self-voting. Once a specified deadline is reached, the highest vote-getter is eliminated. Ties are resolved in favor of whoever received their last vote first. Voting No Elimination and unvoting is not allowed.

Unlimited Voting

You may vote as many players as you'd like, you may also vote No Elimination and also vote players. To unvote a specific player, you post UNVOTE: {playername}.

Kingmaker games still happen (Popcorn), even if they arent common. Plurality used to be the standard for deadlines (highest vote getter goes, if a tie whoever reached that point first), think that started shifting to majority acquired or day just ends around 10 years ago.

Ran four of these that had a vote mechanic where if a player dies they transfer all of their votes to another player, so they continue to stack as the game goes on, so in this one there were 13 votes in play every day, just by end of it people had up to five votes. This was one where scum achieved win condition by controlling a majority of the votes while lacking a majority of players.
