No Idea Mafia

Vanilla Townie

You possess no special abilities.

Mod Notes: You must choose who gets what role rather than randomizing it. You should not inform the players of this change.
---
Welcome to No Idea Mafia, as in You have No Idea what is happening. In this thread, you will submit roles like in Grand Idea, but there is one restriction: your role must cause the game to be classified as bastard. Bastard games on mafiascum are defined as games that contain any of the following: cults and other mid-game alignment changes, roles that cause moderator dishonesty that cannot be reasonably anticipated (for example, Godfather, Tailor, Miller, Ninja, and mechanics like that are generally fine. Telling someone they are a reflexive doctor when they're actually a PGO is not), post restrictions, secret win conditions. nonrandom role assignment, direct moderator influence during the game, allowing your game to be discussed outside the game thread and its own PTs, or adding players midgame. The other restriction in this thread is that only the following non-third-party alignments are allowed (you can go wild with third parties):
town
,
mafia
,
werewolves
,
aliens
, and
cult
. No pirates, alternate mafiosos, apparitions, etc. allowed here. Again, you can go wild with
neutral
and
self-aligned
roles.

This setup actively encourages you to go crazy and go nuts. Setups are rolled in the traditional Grand Idea style. If this becomes popular enough, I'll create a wiki page for it.

Mafia Goon

You possess no special abilities.

Mod Notes: After assigning roles, you must choose the alignments of every role in the game while keeping ratios the same. For example, if there are eight town and three mafia rolecards, choose three of the roles to become mafia-aligned ones and make the rest town. You should not inform the players of this change.

Werewolf Goon

You possess no special abilities.

Mod Notes: Eliminations in this game secretly function differently from how they typically do. At the start of each day, randomly select an option below that has not yet been selected. You should not inform players of this change.

- The elimination is instead a vote to grant a player a killing ability during the next night. The "eliminated" player temporarily loses their previous role in favour of "Compulsive Triple Vigilante". They must choose three separate players to attempt to kill. Factional kills may be performed in tandem with this ability.
- The elimination is instead a vote to grant a player bulletproof for the next night. The "eliminated" player is not eliminated and must then select half of the rest of the game's players, rounded down, to also gain bulletproof for the next night.
- The elimination is instead a vote to kingmaker a player. After the first "elimination" is chosen, the "eliminated" player is not eliminated and instead must choose the real elimination.

Once you run out of options, eliminations return to functioning as they would have otherwise.

Mafia Conspirator

Randomize another mafia role from the No Idea mafia thread. You are that role, with Conspirator included on top of it. You must be a role that can take part in the factional PT.

You appear to investigatives (and to your partners, if roles are included in the factional PT) identically to the role you randomized and possess all of its abilities.

However, while you appear to be mafia-aligned and take part in the factional PT with other mafia members, in reality, you win if all other members of the mafia are slain before you are.

Mod Notes: The Conspirator portion of this role does not flip on death.

Alien Mind Flayer

Every town-aligned player in the game falsely believes they a random group scum alignment (mafia, werewolf, alien, cultist). Kills or recruits made by them will have no effect. Alignment reveals on death still show their original alignment.

Mod Notes: Town-aligned players have their alignment and wincon shown as groupscum-aligned in their role PMs with no groupscum partners and no factional PT. Their role PM is identical to that of a lone groupscum. They are, in reality, town-aligned and have a town win condition.

In the case of masons, their mason partners will appear to be groupscum partners and their PT will appear to be a groupscum factional PT.

Alien Mind Flayer

Every mafia-aligned player falsely believes they are a Mafia Conspirator. If they were actually a Mafia Conspirator, they instead falsely believe they are not one.

Mafia-aligned players believe they are a Conspirator on top of their existing mafia role. Their role PM is identical to that of a Mafia Conspirator with that role. They are, in reality, just their existing mafia role.

If they were already a Conspirator, then that part of their role is hidden to them.

Mafia Deserter

You are a traitor for the mafia-aligned faction. You know the identities of all mafia who have access to the factional PT and win alongside them. If new players are added to this list you will be informed, but not if they are removed. As long as every factional PT mafia player is dead or otherwise not present in the game and you are still alive, your role and alignment will change to the following:

Jester Super-Supersaint

You win if you are eliminated by majority vote. The elimination must actually kill you.

After your elimination, the last two voters on your wagon will be killed alongside you.

Mod Notes: Can only win alongside mafia while one factional PT mafia member is still alive. Can only win as a jester while all factional PT mafia are dead. If something causes a mafia member to become resurrected after they were all dead or if a new mafia member is created, the Deserter reverts back to their original role and alignment.

If the Deserter is killed, they will be locked into whichever alignment they were while alive. It does not change while dead.

The Deserter is fully aware of how their role and alignment functions. The Deserter is informed when their role and alignment changes.

Alien Mind Flayer

Every werewolf-aligned player falsely believes they are a Mafia Deserter. However, when all factional mafia members are dead, they will instead revert to their original werewolf-aligned role and join a factional PT with all other werewolves.

Any passive effects the werewolf player's role originally had will remain in effect while they are a Mafia Deserter, however, they cannot perform any active abilities.

On death, they will appear the same as a Mafia Deserter if they have not been informed they are a werewolf yet.

Mod Notes: Werewolf-aligned players believe they are a Mafia Deserter. Their role PM appears exactly the same as it would to a real Mafia Deserter. At no point are the werewolf-aligned players actually aligned with the mafia. They are always werewolves.

If a werewolf-aligned player dies before all factional mafia members are killed, they will flip as a Mafia Deserter. After the werewolves have formed a PT, they will flip correctly as their original werewolf role and alignment.

Werewolves do not revert back to Deserters if a Mafia member is resurrected.

Cult Acquisitioner

Each night, you may target a player. If your target belongs to a groupscum faction, you will convert all members of that faction to your cult, kill your target, and take your target's place in their respective factional PT which will be renamed to a cult PT.

This ability may not be used if the factional cult ability is being used by another cultist on the same night.

Mod Note: The new cult wins in conjunction with all existing cults. The Acquisitioner becomes a member of both PTs. The target's alignment will be changed to cult-aligned they are killed.

Town Mod Channeler

Each night, you may target any one player. It is up to the moderator what this ability does.

Mod Note: You may decide how this ability functions pregame, each night, after the player has selected the target, or any of these whenever you like. The ability may stay the same or change. You may not inform the player of what the ability does (unless moderation feedback is a part of the ability, such as with an investigation).

Werewolf Goon

Mod note: If this role is rolled, at the end of setup generation, convert random townies into scum until every faction (all four scum factions + town) are approximately equal in numbers. Then, change the win conditions so that all the scum factions win together, but without informing any of the scum of this. Additionally, scum factional kills do not function, all townies are given a factional PT to talk to each other, and town is given a factional kill.

Town Late Decider

At the end of Day 2, just after the elimination, the moderator will choose a role for you.

At the end of Day 3, if it looks like town have little hope of winning and you are still alive, the moderator will change your win condition into something more achievable.

Early Decider

As you confirm, you must choose an alignment (town, werewolf, mafia, alien, or cult). You will become a vanilla of that faction (note: vanilla Cultists cannot recruit).

The moderator will override the choice if it would leave the setup too unbalanced.

It's actually surprisingly hard to make viable roles with a "must be bastard" restriction, simply because there are lots of things that are "obviously bastard" but don't fall afoul of the site's definition. For example, I was thinking about something along the lines of "OK, let's just give a player mod powers and access to the mod PT", but turns out – nope, not bastard enough.

Even this one may be illegal, because I think you can reasonably argue that in a game like this, any form of moderator dishonesty can be reasonably anticipated (in fact, if the role doesn't look bastard, that's basically a guarantee that it involves either moderator dishonesty or a secret win condition).

but you don't know what kind it is, so it's arguably still something you can't predict

y'know maybe this would've worked better if it was DM only

Neutral Moderator Vote Enabler

While you and the moderator are alive, the moderator has a vote. Unless otherwise allowed, this role does not allow a moderator to communicate in thread except possibly through their vote.

You win if the moderator is eliminated while you are still alive. Achieving your win condition does not cause the game to end.
Mod Notes: Eliminating the moderator should end the day with a flip (no role pm), and the moderator loses their vote. The moderator may change their vote anytime they wish and do not have to post when they do. The moderator's vote should be clearly reflected on vote counts.
---
With regards to , I don't see how town can win that. Correct me if I am wrong, but since scum typically win at parity (and they are all together), wouldn't town immediately lose since they would equal the town?

I think the part in parenthesis is key though. That kind of thing is explicitly labeled as bastard. You don't know the precise thing you are even if you know it isn't what it says.

Town Neighbour

You are neighbours with the moderator, and get to talk with them about how the game is going in general terms.

Re: #, I'm assuming a victory condition along the line of "you win when nothing can prevent you eliminating all the town". The scum factions don't know who is in the other scum factions, so they will have a tendency to vote each other out by mistake, giving town a chance.

Town Returner

Each night, you may choose to have yourself be force-replaced.

If you are force-replaced as a consequence of your ability, you may rejoin the game during a subsequent night as a Vanilla Townie. (The player who replaced you continues to play in your old slot, as a Town Returner; you rejoin the game in a new player slot.)

Survivor Night 0-Day 2 Global Vote Restrictor

Until you are dead; or until Day 2 has ended, everyone - including yourself - is under the following post restriction:
Post RestrictionYou may not communicate - in ANY of the game threads(excluding private communication with the moderator) - except with posts containing exactly one name of a player who is either alive or appearing to be alive, enclosed in one vote tag with its ending like this:VOTE: NAME
Everyone may break this post restriction once(this applies per player), at the cost of not being able to speak or vote for the rest of the day(minimum activity requirements waived) with the additional cost of losing one's vote for that day or the following day. The cost starts being applied when the mod informs the player that they have broken the post restriction.
Breaking this post restriction more than once, however, is strictly forbidden
and results in the immediate loss of your entire faction(which then leaves the game)
.

You win if you survive until
1. someone wins, causing the game to end. This is not a game-ending win condition.
2. no one else alive can win - except other survivors. This is a game-ending win condition.

Werewolf Goon

Mod Note: You must alter the way at least half of the players' roles in the game work. You can perform multiple alterations on the same player. Alterations include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Changing roles. For example, a Vanilla Townie becomes a Town Disloyal Roleblocker. The role holder knows their real role, but not that it was changed.
- Changing alignments. For example, an Alien Mindflayer becomes a Town Mindflayer. The role holder knows their real alignment, but not that it was changed.
- Changing how a complex role functions with the role holder in the know. For example, a Late Decider decides on their role on Day 4 instead of Day 2, but the Late Decider gets to choose the role from a list of three the moderator provides. The Late Decider knows how this new role works, there is no trickery.
- Changing how a complex role functions secretly. For example, a Returner will instead return to the game as a vanilla of a completely random alignment. They are not informed of this change.

Town Negotiator

As long as you are alive, all neutral roles and third parties win alongside your alignment, even if that goes against their win condition. On the flip side, if a neutral or third party player winning would cause your alignment to lose, you instead win in conjunction with them. They will be informed of this as well as your identity.

You are immune to being targeted by all neutral and third party killing actions.

Each night, you may target a player to render them immune to killing actions for that night. If you target a neutral or third-party aligned player, they will be permanently converted to your alignment but will not lose any of their previous abilities.

Mod Note: Third parties and neutral roles that cannot typically win alongside the Negotiator's alignment (such as a Serial Killer) will be informed that players of the Negotiator's alignment pose no threat to them for wincon so long as the Negotiator is still alive. If a third party or neutral role causes all players to lose when they win, they will be informed the Negotiator's alignment will also win with them.

They will also be given the Negotiator's name and told they cannot target the Negotiator with a killing action.

Third parties and neutrals that can already win in conjunction with the Negotiator's alignment or for whatever reason absolutely cannot be converted to an alignment that can win in conjunction with the Negotiator's alignment will not be informed of anything.

Showstopper

Each night, you may submit a list of every other player in the game alongside a guess to each player's respective alignment. Guesses must be made in the form of "TOWN" and "NOT TOWN".

This ability deactivates if there are no town-aligned players left alive when a night phase begins. If this occurs, you will be informed at night start and your alignment will change to Neutral Survivor.

If you guess the alignment of every single player correctly, you will attack every player in the game who cannot win in conjunction with town. This ability can still be roleblocked or protected against. Regardless of what happens, you win and exit the game after a successful guess.
