What's up with Blitz games?

I'm talking about the 72/24 hour phase games.

This site's specialty is the exact opposite of blitzes.

I played 1 game on mafiauniverse with 96/12 phases and really didn't like the pace. I would be gone for the day at school and 20 pages would appear.

I've run a few 72/24 games here and played in some as well (and also some 96/24). They're popular enough to fill when they happen, and they happen, if not all the time, then at least with reasonable frequency. Micc ran a whole series of them in the micro queue when he was listmod there.

I agree with Ircher, though, that there are plenty of sites to play faster games if that's what you're looking for, and that it will most likely always be the case that

most

games on MS.net will have day phases of at least a week. That is the particular niche that this site appeals to. Blitz is a nice change of pace once in a while but not really our bread and butter.

There was the Blitz Game PM List at one point, but the OP hasn't posted on the site since the start of 2020 so I suspect it would be best not to resurrect that thread.

The data just doesn't support that people want to play Blitzs. Last time I tested out a Blitz queue I had to beg people to run games, participate, and it ultimately failed after a week and a half.

I think a lot of people think that "other" people want to play Blitz games. But the truth is, they are a very niche format.

One solution is to have a Minithon weekend every weekend. A Minithon queue mod (probably whoever manages Marathon Weekend) will queue up 5 to 10 games a day, one game an hour.
I could ddive deeper into details, but having more frequent Marathon Weekends would satiate the Blitz fans (and also be an attractor to users who want more fast-paced mafia games, bonus!)

Well, they are both much shorter format games than what is typically seen on the site.

Marathon is shortform Mishmash/mafia
Blitz is shortform mafia (albeit longer in terms of the literal timespans)

So, they do share the quality of being shortform versions of what currently exist.

I like this site because I get sporadic bursts of activity. I can't keep up with a 72/24 etc for more than 1 game day because of court.

Once i started complaining loudly about a game with a 48 hour deadline on MU i realized how much i prefer this sort of games with usually 1 week deadline.
As has been said, if most people here sign up for longer games because we like it or have little time IRL to keep on all day. Why would you join an stressfull Blitz game?

We've tried this too. More Marathons means people get burned out and stop playing marathons.

There isn't a solution because there isn't a player base demanding these types of games on site.

I don't say this to say we're unwilling to try new ideas to improve the site...these just aren't new ideas, we've tried them, and they don't work.
