The Crown of Misery

Image

First was the harmless village fool, sarcastically nicknamed Something Smart over his out
of place utterances. His fingernails grew into grotesque talons, his spine hunched forward
and his hair burst in a sudden growth, twisting into a repulsive, tangled mess. Shrunken like
a shrivelled pear, his body shed its farm clothes, revealing the bloated, misshapen flesh
underneath, stained by a myriad of tattoos.

Then came Robert Black, hissing with serpentine delight, exposing his unnatural fangs and
bloodshot eyes that punctured his arid, bone-white face that now resembled a monstrous
bat.

Finally, it was Auro who cast off his coat and stretched around in his black robe, conjuring
his necromantic staff with a gesture.

The remaining militiamen fought valiantly, but they were no match for the black magic
and unholy might of the three undead. The trickster was felled first, struck down by
Robert's sword as his body was locked in a magical torpor by the vampire's dreadful
sight. The other villagers were carved through by the warlock's bone dagger, whose
demented chants filled the tavern and dulled their screams. Auro went on to feed on
Nako, whose weak attempt at tossing an ignited oil lamp was easily stalled by his strong
hand, moments before a ripple shimmered through her body and left her a desiccated
husk, her life force stolen and added to the immortal's eternal debauchery.

They saved the angel Lamees for last, hoping to trap her in and escape before heaven's
wrath caught up to them. Unfortunately, she managed to end her mortal life before they
could reach her. At that moment, the inn became flooded with light and the warlock's
chants quickly grew into panicked screams as the radiance engulfed his malformed
body.

"Whatever," Auro told R.B. later on, once the bodies were all properly consumed and
disposed of. "I'd grown weary of his insane rituals."

"Wow," The vampire agreed. "So true, in my opinion."

The croak of a raven pierced the air, followed by the hurried flapping of wings as the bird
flew off the dilapidated inn's sign. That was the last sound a living creature ever made in
Hallowcrest before nature itself surrendered Misery's Crown into the clutches of oblivion,
for evermore.

Game Setup

Village (10)Undead (3)
Villager

(townie)
Ghoul

(goon)
Priest (3)

(cop)
Vampire (2)

(roleblocker)
Witch Hunter (2)

(JOAT: vig, cop, track)
Death Knight (2)

(avenger)
Sorceress (3)

(vigilante)
Ghost (2)

(framer)
Enchantress (1)

(spell blocker)
Zombie (3)

(delayed lynchproof)
Healer (2)

(doctor)
Banshee (2)

(non-consecutive strongman)
Angel (2)

(day/night vengeful)
Immortal (2)

(godfather)
Trickster (1)

(non-consecutive commuter)
Witch (1)

(rolecop)
numbers show the role's worth in ascension points

Setup generation

  1. The village randomly start with 5-9 ascension points. The undead start with the
    same number minus three.
  2. The village are then randomly assigned roles whose combined worth equals their
ascension points. Each role has a fixed chance to appear and can do so more than
    once:
    • Priest - 25%
      (1-25)

      Witch Hunter - 20%
      (26-45)

      Sorceress - 15%
      (46-60)

      Enchantress - 10%
      (61-70)

      Healer - 10%
      (71-80)

      Angel - 10%
      (81-90)

      Trickster - 10%
      (91-100)
  3. The undead are told which village roles are in the game and have 48 hours to pick
    their own powers (no duplicates).
  4. The game beings when all roles are distributed and confirmed.

Special Game Mechanics

  1. Active abilities are classified in two categories: spells and physical skills. Enchanters'
protective ability blocks malevolent spells, but does not block physical skills. Blockable
abilities are stated as such in their description.
  2. Angelic kills work in a similar way to priest and witch hunter investigations. They kill
undead and ghost-possessed creatures, but spare non-undead and immortals.
  3. The undead have daytalk. Zombies who haven't been put to rest can still communicate
    privately, even if "dead".

Role Information

Some of the roles in the game do not work exactly like normal Mafia roles. A quick summary
of the differences can be found on the setup's wiki. Below is a list of all roles with their full
description.
Note:
priests, enchanters, sorcerers and witches may use alternate portraits and spelling depending on the player's gender.

Spoiler: Role cards
Image
You were living a peaceful life as a tradesperson, until ghouls
attacked and murdered your family. Now you have rallied to
arms with the rest of your village to fight against the undead
menace.

Living
(passive)

Unaffected by holy water and angelic fire.

Image
Priests pray to sanctify water, which they then use against those
who are believed to be undead. A drop of holy water will boil on
an unholy creature's flesh and expose its true face beneath the
disguise. Having heard of recent ghoul sightings, you have eagerly
left the altar in your church to help find the perpetrators and save
innocent lives.

Living
(passive)

Unaffected by holy water and angelic fire.

Holy Water
(night active)

If sprinkled on an unliving creature, it sizzles and shows a glimpse of its true
face.

Image
You belong to an order of witch hunters, highly trained sharpshooters
who show up in times of need to deal with supernatural threats.
You've heard rumours of undead attacks in a nearby village and set
out to lend a helping hand, and should the need arise — a gun.

Living
(passive)

Unaffected by holy water and angelic fire.

Vial of Holy Water
(night active, 1-time)

If sprinkled on an unliving creature, it sizzles and shows a glimpse of its true
face. Only usable once.

Mote of St. George's Fire
(night active, 1-time)

Illuminates a creature's path, revealing where it visited. Only usable once.

Silver Bullet
(night active, 1-time)

Kills another creature. Only usable once.

Image
You are a student of magic in the Ruby Tower. While your masters
have been trying to determine the nature of the undead curse, you
have been sent for a different reason — to prove your knowledge of
magic and to put the wretched creatures out of their suffering.

Living
(passive)

Unaffected by holy water and angelic fire.

Lightning Bolt
(night active, spell)

Kills another creature. Blocked by a spell shield.

Image
As a master of defensive spells, the Ruby Tower wizards have sent
you to aid the allies against the undead threat who are ill-prepared
to face the powerful curses and deadly magic of the dark creatures
on their own.

Living
(passive)

Unaffected by holy water and angelic fire.

Spell Shield
(night active, spell)

Protects another creature from harmful magic and reanimation.

Image
Unlike most wizards, you did not spend your youth in the libraries
of the Ruby Tower, but instead travelled to practise your healing
arts on wounded soldiers, the ill and the infirm. With the undead
attacks claiming more and more victims, you have set your sights
on a village where your help is urgently needed.

Living
(passive)

Unaffected by holy water and angelic fire.

Restoration
(night active, spell)

Protects another creature from dying, but not from strong kills (such as
death wail).

Image
Even the heavens don't stay silent in the face of the ghoul menace.
Having heard their desperate prayers, you have arrived as a
messenger amongst the faithful to guide them and help them fight
back against the unholy scourge. While your powers in your mortal
form are limited, you can unleash terrible wrath if you happen to be
released from it.

Celestial
(passive)

Unaffected by holy water and angelic fire.

Smite
(reactive)

When an angel dies, the skies will open up and strike a creature of its
choosing. Unliving targets will be slain.

Image
Mischievous, but noble at heart, you make your living by preying
on greedy merchants, stern masters, and humourless authorities.
Always taking a little more than you can get away with, you have
an uncanny talent for simply not being there anymore when the
angry blades swish at you. However, with the undead threat on
the horizon, you and the villagers easily agreed to overlook such
"misunderstandings" and fight side by side against this new evil.

Living
(passive)

Unaffected by holy water and angelic fire.

Invisibility
(night active, non-consecutive)

Becomes untargetable by any abilities except strong kills. Cannot be
used two nights in a row.

Image
Ghouls are former humans who have been afflicted with undeath.
They maintain their mortal appearance throughout the day, but at
night they transform into ravenous flesh-eating monstrosities. Owing
to the fact that virtually anyone could be a ghoul in disguise, an
undead attack results in profound paranoia and panic, and many
more lives are lost as the mistrustful survivors turn on their friends
and families.

Feast
(night active, shared)

Kills another creature. Only one shared ability may be used per faction
per night.

Image
A vampire typically is vain, rich or influential in life. Fearing their
eventual demise, or simply coveting more power, these mortals
enter foolish pacts with dark wizards, exchanging their souls for
everlasting youth, beauty and strength. They invariably come to
realise the horrible price they've paid, as they must continuously
drink blood to sustain their new state, lest they die and spend an
eternity in perdition.

Drain
(night active, shared)

Kills another creature. Only one shared ability may be used per faction
per night.

Mesmerise
(night active, spell)

Paralyses another creature, preventing it from using its active abilities
for the night. Blocked by a spell shield.

Image
After a bloody massacre, necromancers can sometimes be seen
wandering the corpse-littered battlefield amongst the vultures.
There they seek out and raise the greatest fallen warriors as
death knights. Fiercely loyal to their new masters, these dark
guardians wield their rusty blades with the same martial prowess
they had in life. Their new forms also allow them to augment their
deadly attacks with black magic.

Slaughter
(night active, shared)

Kills another creature. Only one shared ability may be used per faction
per night.

Dark Ward
(night active, spell)

Curses another creature. Should that creature die on the same night,
all of its killers will also die. Both the curse and its reactive kills can be
blocked by a spell shield.

Image
Ghosts are deceased souls, anchored to the mortal realm by
black magic and bound to a necromantic host. Driven mad by
their tortured existence, they harbour enormous envy for the
living, in whose bodies they seek temporary relief and a chance
to feel the warmth of life once again. But those fleeting few hours
never sate their thirst for vitality, and so they kill their victims in
bitter despair, only to move on to the next body. Only once the
host meets his or her demise do they finally earn their freedom.

Chilling Touch
(night active, shared)

Kills another creature. Only one shared ability may be used per faction
per night.

Haunt
(night active, spell)

Possesses another creature for one night. Holy water and angelic fire
will treat possessed creatures as if they were undead. Blocked by a
spell shield.

Image
Unlike common ghouls, a zombie is far more difficult to create,
as it requires a sophisticated ritual and only but a few corpses
survive the process. Once raised however, zombies are fearsome
adversaries that can prove incredibly difficult to slay, as even the
simplest undead minion can effortlessly reanimate them at dawn.
Only silver bullets, magic, and the might of the heavens can put
these relentless abominations to rest for good.

Feast
(night active, shared)

Kills another creature. Only one shared ability may be used per faction
per night.

Reanimation
(reactive, spell)

If at least one other undead remains, a zombie will rise from the dead
at dawn if lynched, though it will be permanently put to rest if slain by
any other means. A zombie will not reanimate while under the effects
of a spell shield, nor if doing so will endgame the remaining players.

Restless Dead
(passive)

While dead, zombies who haven't been put to rest cannot be killed by
normal means and can continue to communicate privately with other
undead.

Image
Banshees are evil spirits who feed on the souls of the ill, the fatally
wounded, the suicidal and other people in mortal danger. They who
hear a banshee's terrible screech die an instant and painless death,
inconspicuous to any onlookers, as the fiend carries the hapless
soul to eternal damnation. This ability to inflict certain death while
preserving the body makes them greatly valued by dark wizards,
who bribe them into their service with generous promises for more
souls.

Chilling Touch
(night active, shared)

Kills another creature. Only one shared ability may be used per faction
per night.

Death Wail
(night active, shared, non-consecutive, strong, spell)

Instantly kills another creature, bypassing normal protection. Only one
shared ability may be used per faction per night. Cannot be used two
nights in a row. Blocked by a spell shield.

Image
The greatest of necromancers have unlocked the secrets of death
to achieve immortality — while still living. Powerful and eternal,
they are the leaders of all lesser undead. Although they lack the
usual weaknesses to holy water and angelic fire, they must still
drink mortal blood to sustain their vigour, lest the halted touch of
time reach through and turn their bodies to ash.

Drain
(night active, shared)

Kills another creature. Only one shared ability may be used per faction
per night.

Deathless
(passive)

Unaffected by holy water and angelic fire.

Image
Witches and warlocks are ungifted fortunetellers who have been
seduced by the easy ways of the black magic. Having exchanged
their lives and souls for true sight, they adorn themselves and their
practices with lots of tattoos, trinkets and mysticism in an effort to
disguise their undeath. Oftentimes the fool who seeks the services
of these dark oracles will end up a victim in a ritual sacrifice, as
they rely on continuous consumption of blood to maintain their evil
pacts.

Slaughter
(night active, shared)

Kills another creature. Only one shared ability may be used per faction
per night.

Divination
(night active, spell)

Learns another creature's powers. Blocked by a spell shield.

Game Rules

Please read this section carefully. Breaking the rules may be punished by forced replacement
or in severe cases a site-wide ban.

General Rules

  • Site Rules.
    Please follow all site rules.

    Play to win.
Game throwing is when someone is intentionally playing against their win
condition. Please do not do this. You will be replaced, and possibly banned from the
    whole site.

    No personal attacks.
Mafia is a psychologically intensive game and discussion gets
heated sometimes. Frustration and saltiness is expected, but it's not an excuse to
insult and harass other players. Attack arguments, not the human being behind them.
Abusive behaviour will not be tolerated.

    Do not be diruptive.
Do not post flashing gifs, huge images, repetitive jokes/memes,
or anything in the same vein that disrupts game flow and annoys other players. If they
ask you to stop, please comply.

    Claiming.
Claiming is a part of the game, just like fake-claiming. If you think that
there is a need in claiming a role, you are not discouraged to do so, as long as you do
not quote or provide screenshots of the role distribution, or any PM from the game
    moderator.

    Graveyard and strangers.
Dead players, as well as unregistered ones, are not allowed
to speak in the game thread. 'Bah' posts are not allowed.

    No discussion of ongoing games.
Do not discuss the game outside its topics or
mention other ongoing games unless their moderator explicitly allows it. More
    information here.

    Be active.
Try to post at least once a day. Being inactive for 36h will result in a prod.
If you do not respond to a prod within 24h, you will be replaced. Accumulating 3 prods
will also result in automatic replacement.

    Night actions.
If you do not PM your night action within 24h of the night start, the
moderator will gently remind you. This does not count as a prod. If you fail to submit
your night action before the deadline, you will not act that night. This goes for undead
    kills as well.

    Unstated guidelines.
Please do not try to take advantage of loopholes and backdoors
within the rules. Inform the moderator in private so she can clarify and update them.
Rule abuse is punished at the moderator's discretion.
Posting Standards

  • Official colours.
    The colour
    #c60b0b
    , as well as any
    shades of grey
    , are to be used
only by the game moderator. Do not try to impersonate her.

    English only.
Greetings and well-known phrases are an exception.

    Do not hide it.
Do not hide messages in invisible texts, tiny fonts (size<75), or
    cryptography. Breadcrumbing is allowed.

    No off-topic posting.
Avoid cluttering the game thread. An occasional sentence or
two is fine, but remember you're here to play mafia.

    Ignore them.
Do not quote, respond, or give attention to violating posts. Since they
are supposed to be deleted, do not extend their existence.

    Default styles.
Try to use the default fonts and vote tags to make parsing a bit easier.
Game Regulations

  • Deadlines.
Day 1 lasts up to 14 days. Further Days last up to 10 days. Nights last for
48 hours. If an angel is lynched and they haven't decided on a target to smite, Sunset
may be extended by up to 36 hours.

    Communication.
The game thread will be locked during the night phase. Private topics
(such as the undead talk) will be open at all times.

    Majority lynches.
A lynch is achieved when half the players + 1 are voting the same
person. As soon as the final vote is cast, the game enters Sunset phase and any further
    votes will be discarded.

    Voting standard.
I highly recommend that you use the official vote tags. The bold tag
is acceptable, but discouraged. Votes in quotes or spoilers will not count.

    Example:
    [
    v]MiniDeathStar[/
    v] produces VOTE: MiniDeathStar

    Unvoting.
Unvoting can be done via the unvote tag. It is not necessary, but it will be
    useful in certain situations.

    Example:
    [
    uv]MiniDeathStar[/
    uv] produces UNVOTE: MiniDeathStar

    No lynch.
You may vote for no lynch in the same way as for a lynch. If a majority vote
has not been achieved by the deadline, the day ends in no lynch.

    Example:
    VOTE: no one

    Votes are changeable.
You can change your votes or unvote at any time during the
Day. You don't need to unvote when re-voting.

Image

Amidst thorny shrubs, gnarly branches and scorched fields lay a barren little village by
the name of Hallowcrest. It was naught more than a pile of dusty and brittle huts that was
gnawed at day after day by the ever-growing cemetery next to it. The local graveyard
was the only thing of note about Hallowcrest, and the only reason why a visitor might stop
at the otherwise welcoming inn "The King's Crown".

Until the undead attacked.

It began with unearthed graves, thought at first to have been the work of grave robbers.
But before long, strange dreams, visions and sightings started haunting the villagers. Crops
were suddenly wilting. Food was found infested with flies. Ravens flew over in flocks, their
caws piercing through the unnatural silence that had descended. It was as if nature itself
had become muted and drained of sound and colour. Shadows and dark corners had
acquired an inky blackness that suffocated the candle flame. Even daylight seemed
bleaker and colder. A hollow, vague feeling of dread gripped the villagers' hearts. They
felt as if a great evil had invaded their homes and was biding its time, waiting for the right
moment to strike.

And strike it did. The first victim was a girl named Meredith. A wormy, decayed hand had
snatched her in her sleep and dragged her away through the window, right before the
eyes of her horrified mother. Her grisly corpse was found the day after, with the bones
almost picked clean of flesh. Meredith's mother was next. Then her father, and her two
brothers. Men, women, and children. The ghouls spared no one.

Rumours of the attack soon reached the nearby villages, as the families of Hallowcrest
fled for their lives. But something more than rumours and refugees found its way in, too.
The ghouls were not just rotten-skinned monstrosities invading homes at night. They also
wore disguises. Friends. Family. Lovers. They could look like anyone. And so the attacks
continued, and the gnawed skeletons piled up.

But villagers fought back, too. A militia was formed that sought out and exposed the
fiends. Anyone suspected to be one of them was tried and summarily executed. Many
innocent lives were lost that way, but undead were also slain. Their bravery and the terrors
they were facing soon attracted heroes and scholars from distant lands who arrived to
lend their aid.

Emboldened by their new allies, the people of Hallowcrest rallied to arms and ventured
back to reclaim their homes. Only but a handful of stubborn villagers had remained
behind, unwilling to abandon their homes despite the danger. Thеy all gathered at the
inn, now rechristened "Misery's Crown" in light of the great sorrows that had befallen the
village. There they swore an oath to rid their land of the foul creatures amongst them,
even if they had to pay with their own lives.

Waiting for players to confirm their roles...

The game will begin when 10 players have confirmed their roles and all undead have chosen theirs.

Chapter 1 - Dawn

The morning chill rocked the inn's faded door sign. Its rusty chains rang with a hollow rattle,
vaguely reminiscent of that of a carcass, dangling on a meat hook. At least that's what
the visitors thought before absently brushing the thought away. Already they could feel
the deep presence of evil in Hallowcrest.

The militia, numbering thirteen souls in total, had just arrived and were now waiting at the
tables, as a burly bearded man named Thor paced between them and growled.

Thor665:
This is how this is going to go. We vote. We hang the one with the majority votes. Then we run. We
hide. And pray to Heaven we don't get eaten. If we split, they can kill at most one of us. We stay together
at night — we die. Questions? Objections?

There were none.

Not voting:
Auro, YyottaCat, Dunnstral, NotNova, Persivul, Leodanny,
InfernoDragon18, rb, Egix96, Lamees, Something_Smart, DVa, Thor665

First.
It's always the same. When you fire that first shot, no matter how right you feel, you have no idea who's going to die. You don't know whose children are going to scream and burn. How many hearts will be broken. How many lives shattered. How much blood will spill, until everybody does what they're always going to have to do from the very beginning... SIT DOWN AND TALK!

Been excited for this one for a while!

Hi to all the players I've played with before, my past games with you have been thoroughly enjoyable and I expect no less out of this experience :)

Now let's get to ghoul-hunting.

VOTE: Auro

Wanna sort this slot early, I know from experience I have difficulty gauging Auro's alignment properly.

Which part, the vote on me or "this is a scumsided setup"?
If it's the latter, she did express the same to me while the game was still in sign-ups.

You've not found it very difficult to townsort me in our previous (completed) games, so why the "RVS" vote on me? :P

I'm blaming you for talking me into joining this game and then having the audacity to let MDS roll me town.

Are you referring to the recent Dethy game?
Who else on this playerlist do you have completed games with?
How will an early wagon on me help you sort me?
