Essaouira

This is a small city on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. I went there a few years ago in 2013 after several months working at my first real job. I remember very clearly the grill stands where you could buy fish from the morning's catch to have cooked in front of you for lunch, and I remember the hospitality of the young man, Bashar, who was working in the Riad where I stayed. It was an incredibly relaxing place to go, and it has a special place in my heart because of that. You might recognise it if you're a Game of Thrones fan or if you've seen the film Lawrence of Arabia.

Reykjavik

I went here in January in 2016, and I still have a very fond memory of the place despite there being plenty of reasons for why I could have had a negative view of the place (including: immediately getting ill, not seeing the northern lights despite that being the "main" reason for the trip, getting water trapped in my ear at the blue lagoon right before flying home and panically googling to see if it could rupture my ear drum given the change in pressure from flying). What I do remember is somewhere incredibly peaceful and calm. It almost felt like a ghost town at points. I enjoyed the little tour we did around some points of interest including going over where two continental plates meet, seeing a waterfall (above) and a geyser, but what really sticks out to me is the time when we were walking round the edge of a frozen lake and decided to make snow angels, or the bar we went to the night before leaving and caught a local band performing indie rock in Icelandic.

I was here this summer and I loved it. It's actually where I asked to be placed when I originally applied to work in Colombia but fate had other ideas. It's a really chilled out city in a lot of ways, and I'm sure my memory of it will be permanently influenced by the fact that I unexpectedly ran into a friend from Bogota there (in the same hostel!) and he had a friend who'd been studying there for the past year who invited us round to eat with her and her host family. We also went salsa dancing (I'm terrible) and it turns out there's a cool film scene, so I went to a pretty comprehensive film museum which was grand because cinema is something I really enjoy. Including a picture of "El Gato del Rio", a famous sculpture there.

Travelling rings in Santa Monica

This may be a slightly odd one, but this really is one of my favourite places. I travelled in the states for about six weeks in 2014, and tired to hit as much of the country as I could, although I didn't touch the South at all, or most of the Midwest. I liked a lot of the places I went to, and I wouldn't say LA was one of my favourite cities all things told (not having a car wasn't great, especially with the bus system being how it was). However, when I was at the beach, I was wandering along and game across these travelling rings. I hung around watching people do aerial stunts with them, and it was just amazing how graceful they were. I was reasonably fit at the time, but when I got on the first time I just couldn't get going at all, and I realised how much technique there was in being smooth. Eventually I managed to get all the way down to the end (and maybe all the way back one single time, although my memory fails me a little) but either way I remember for sure how there was a slightly weird but very friendly group hanging around and chatting, giving pointers and the like. One of the highlights of the trips, certainly as far as "places" are concerned.

Barcelona

So I've got two spots in Catalunya coming up in quick succession, with the most famous one entering first. Honestly, I could just do Catalunya as a region on its own as well (and may do, if you guys keep making me do this many VCs!) but I think there's enough about Barcelona for it to deserve it's own spot. I didn't love everything about the city -- it can be very touristy which isn't something I love, and it's very large which makes travelling around on public transport a little frustrating. What I do love about it though is the difference from London. The feeling is totally different. In London, I think you often feel like you're rushing from one thing to another, impatient, under pressure. In Barcelona, you amble. You don't feel the need to know exactly where you're going so long as you have the general direction right. It's also filled with art and culture, and history, but what I'm including is again, a place which I personally value. It's called "Los Bunkers del Carmel" and during the Civil War it was an antiaircraft battery. Nowadays, it's a place where young people go to drink, picnic, smoke, and watch the night fall on the city. On my last day before we left, I'd had some friends visiting and we'd gone to the waterpark south of the city for the day, and everyone was too tired to want to go there in the evening. So I made my way there on my own, hiked up to the top with a couple of beers, and sat and watched the sun fall on the city one last time.

Sant Cugat del Valles

This is the town I was based in while living in Catalunya for the first few months. I was with different host families and got moved against my will, but it was here that my first (and favourite) host family lived. It's a really expensive area within the whole of Spain, and I never could have afforded to be there on my own dime, so I was very lucky to have been able to stay. But again, it's less the place, and more the people. That first host family really welcomed me like I was one of their own and it never felt transactional. We went on holiday together to the Costa Brava, and to the southern end of France twice. I was still reeling from a breakup a few months earlier and they helped me start putting my life back together, even though I still very much don't know what I'm doing. Here's an image of the main square, with the monastery front and centre, and the restaurant they took me to eat at on my first night in the country just out of site behind the trees on the left.

This is where I lived for two years while I was in London. For several months of that period, I was living with two of my best friends (one who became a friend from living together, one from way back). I also worked in a local bar which was probably the most fun job I've ever had. I didn't really like my university, but this was a really good time in my life, and that's probably played into a lot of my positive feelings about the place. Looking back now, I wish I'd got more involved with the local community that exists there, there're a lot of migrants from both Jamaica and Latin America and they've had a lasting impact on the place.

Bogota

Where I was based in Colombia. If you'd asked me this time last year, I would have told you there was no way in hell that Bogota would ever be in a list of my favourite places. But then... things changed. It stopped feeling so dangerous, and I started enjoying it more. I made a Colombian friend who was a dancer as well as an English teacher, and she started to introduce me to some of the cultural elements of the city, going to dance shows or theatre. I bought a bike and was much happier being able to cycle around rather than walking or taking the awful public transport system. Do I still think it has its flaws? Absolutely. But I wouldn't give back my time there for the world.

(The image is of Parkway, a carrera (roughly translates as 'avenue') which has a park running down the middle of it. It's not one of the super posh areas of the city in general, so there's still lots of Colombians around, but it's also kind of artsy which I like and pretty safe to hang around at night.)

Pacifico

When I was in Colombia, I had a contract until the end of May but my flight was booked at the end of June. I took the opportunity to go travelling to a couple of places. One was Cali, already mentioned, but another was to the pacific coast of Colombia or 'el Pacifico'. I knew a couple of people who had already been, and they recommended a hostel called 'Casa Azul'. To get there, you have to get a bus from Cali to Buenaventura (a really dodgy coastal city) and then get a small boat for two hours up the coastline. From there it's two hours walk to the hostel, or in our case a fifteen minute ride on the back of a motorcycle (me, my friend, and both our largish backpacks) because of the rainstorm that comes in most nights and that had started early on the day we arrived.

It's a strange place, the pacific coast. It's incredibly wild in some ways, and not that populated. But at the same time, the effects of the modern world are so intensely visible; there's plastic garbage that's washed up all over the beaches. I was only there for about three days, and now I wish I'd stayed longer. If I were back in Colombia, I'd stay for at least a couple of weeks there.

I went here when I was a kid. It's one of the large lakes in the north of Italy. I don't remember everything, but I remember beautiful old Italian towns on the edge of the lake, and taking the ferry between them. I remember wearing a white vest and wanting to be Ryan from the OC. I remember my dad letting me take a turn at steering the motorboat we rented one afternoon, and eating gelato at the edge of the lake. I remember driving up into the mountains that surround the lake and swimming in a much smaller, greener lake, and how shocked I was by the chill of the water in the middle of a summer day. Nostalgia lives in this place for me.

Saint-Etienne (countryside)

I was here this summer, on a little tour around some of France before I moved here in October. I went to some big name destinations: Paris, Lyon, and to a lesser extent, Grenoble. But my favourite place was actually when I went to Saint-Etienne for two nights. I stayed with a friend who I'd met very briefly in Colombia (she was the friend of a friend, truth be told, we'd spent about a day together). I told her I was going to be passing nearby (Lyon is about an hour away) and asked if she was around and she invited me to stay with her. So I met her friends, who showed me around the city. We made brownies, and I helped when the dad of one of her friends turned up with a van packed full of furniture that needed moving into the basement. We had dinner in a park and then a different friend invited us to his place where we drank whisky and played guitar.

The next day we went, with the friend from the night before, out to her parents' second place in the country side. We went biking, and had lunch with them, and set up a hammock she'd brought back from Peru. In the evening we went back to her home in the city and cooked together and I played guitar and little piano and we talked for a long time. This, again, is not something that can be separated from the place for me. Had I been on my own, I think Saint-Etienne would be a drop in the ocean that is my memories. But as it is, I still recall the tranquility of that idyllic afternoon with a slightly wistful smile.

There is some discussion in dead thread, and there were certainly some oversights: for instanced I thought that 1shot vig would be strongly incentivised to stay quiet to maximise the odds of shooting scum later in the game — I didn’t consider the possibility of them outing D1 as likely, which in turn made the psychologist more powerful

I really hate the setup spec and strong-in-a-boring-way roles of normal queue and almost never play normal queue, but Menalque was moderator for this game so I joined it to attempt to cause menalquesmiles
