13 of you head out on an awesome field trip to the Isle of Arran in Scotland. The isle of Arran is an excellent place to learn about geology and have bitching parties at night time. Each day your field trip organiser, Guyett, brings you out in the field to explore the island but he heads to bed early and lets the students stay up drinking. Unfortunately there are some amongst you that are not real Geologists (Town).... There are Geographers (Mafia) amongst the crowd for you to find. The Geographers are notorious dry shites and are aiming to whittle down the numbers.

You all pile out of the bus at our first location, Corie foreshore. The foreshore is a small harbor on the East side of the Island. All the rocks here are sedimentary in origin and as you can see the change in colour of the bedding as you walk up through the straigraphy (bottom of the pic to the top). This indicates a change in environment over time. More on this at the next VC.....

As you walk up the beach you notice the change in colour in the rocks. The rocks to the North of the beach are alternating red and grey in colour. The red beds are very sandy in composition and the grey beds are more massive and are extremely coarse, these are conglomerates. These are the oldest rocks on the beach, the rocks are Late Devonian in age (older than ~360 million years by a few million years) and were likely formed as fluvial (river) deposits.

Further down the beach you reach Carboniferous limestone..... well you would if it was still there. Years and years ago the limestone was quarried for building materials and to make room for a small harbour

To see the limestone you must make a 5 min walk inland up a hill where the limestone outcrops very well. The fossils seen are large Brachiopods.

The very last bit of the beach is all red sandstone from the Permian. This is all aeolian sandstone, that means the sand was deposited in a desert environment... so this wet horrible part of Scotland was once under a desert approximately 280 million years ago. On the other side of the island in Permian sediment there is trace fossil footprints of type of creature that one of the forerunners of the dinosaurs, but thats a story for another votecount.
Some of the coolest features at this section of beach are the fulgurites. Fulgurites are essentially fossilized lightning strikes!!! They are formed when lightning strikes sand. Modern examples can be found around the world in deserts but apparently the best place to find them is in golf courses where lightning has hit a bunker

goodmorning was so sure the person was a scummy geographer. Just before lunch she picked up a rock on the beach and ran up to the back of the person intending to quietly bash the persons head in... unfortunately she forgot how slippery the rocks were.

It's getting quite late in the day, we have time for one last look at Corrie foreshore. It is possible to work out the flow direction of the rivers that deposited the oldest Devonian sediment and the main wind direction during the deposition of the Permian sandsstone in the desert. This is done by measuring the orientation of the cross bedding.
Cross bedding is quite noticeable in the rocks at corrie.

Everyone is in the kitchen at 8 am making lunch for the day ahead when I enter the room. The place is an absolute mess, there are bottle caps, wine bottles and the odd empty bottle of spirits littering the table. An odd look of disgust and pride washes over my face... must have been a good night haha.

We arrive at todays location relatively quickly, Drumadoon point is quite close to our hostel. The geology here is vastly different to the geology seen at Corrie Foreshore.... Instead of sedimentary rocks, crossbedding and fulgurites we will look at sills, dykes and possibly some felsite!!!
Thats right, today is all about igneous geology
What you see in the picture is the cliff face of Drumadoon, known locally as "the doooooon" (pronounce it in a Scottish accent... imagine you are saying Dune but draw out the 'U')
The Doon is, in my opinion, one of the nicest locations in all of Arran

The first location on the beach that we come to is this straight dark feature known as a dyke. It was much more resistant than the country rock that once would have been intruded by the dyke. These dykes are dolomitic and would have originated from nearby magma chambers

Next VC will look at Drumadoon but this is just to explain what the difference between a sill and a dyke is. As you can see a dyke is a vertical intrusion through and a sill is a horizontal intrusion. Drumadoon is a sill but the geology is a little more complex than what is shown in the diagram below.

First stop of the day is Rubha Airigh Bheirg (pronounced like rubbery veg) to the West of the island. We are stopping here to look at some low grade metamorphic rocks. The rocks here show evidence of multiple metamorphic events and are part of a type of rock found through Scotland and Ireland known as the Dalradian metasediments. There appears to be overprinting on the rocks, this is known as cleavage. It is slightly difficult to distinguish between bedding and cleavage in the field but the diagram below shows how this is done. The bedding is the purple and yellow sections and as it is compressed the rocks fold. Cleavage is a type of linear deformation that shows the orientation of the fold axis. At Rubha Airigh Bheirg the cleavage and bedding appears to be very random but by plotting information on a stereonet it is possible to make sense of what is going on.... more at the next VC.

I did promise a short bit on stereonets... I'll keep is very short as they're complicated and people find them confusing.
Basically they are a flattened circle that able to look like it is in 3d. The image below shows the stereonet with some data plotted on it. Each line corresponds to the strike and dip of some bedding plane. The dip is the direction the bed is angled towards with the angle as well, shallow dipping bedding is almost horizontal and will be quite a wide circular line on the stereonet whereas a steeply dipping bed will be almost vertical and the line will plot close to the center of the circle. The strike is simple 90 degrees from the direction of the dip of the bed.

Next stop is at a location called Lochranza, this is the first of our bonus extra stops. You deserve it after steronets.
Within a 5 minute walk of Locranza is a place known as Hutton's Unconformity. James Hutton is considered one of the fathers of modern geology and this is one of the locations where he found examples to back up his theories (another location will be seen tomorrow). Before Hutton people had a very poor idea on how old the Earth was, Hutton saw these rocks and deduced that because one set of rocks must be considerably older than the other set of rocks the Earth must be considerably older than was originally thought. The image below shows Hutton's Unconformity with 2 distinct rock types, the older has been tilted to around 45 degrees and eroded away with later rock being deposited at a much different angle as seen below

We move towards our next location but en route we make the second of our surprise stops. We pull into this building which just happens to be the Isle of Arran distillery. Its not a proper geology field trip without some trip to somewhere alcoholic.... Some very fine Scotch is made here and we get a look around the distillery from the tourguide, an elderly Scotsman wearing a Kilt going by the name Cambell. At the end of the tour we do some tasting of a fine 10 year old single malt.

After the Scotch experience everyone decided that we'd go home for the day and we'd be going to North Glen Sannox the next day.... At least that was the plan. After dinner the geographers decided enough was enough!!! This ends tonight they muttered to each other. After I went to bed the party continued long into the night and by the time I woke up and almost everyone had assembled out in the courtyard ready for another hard days work everyone just looked atrocious. "fun night?" I inquired... then did a quick head count.... "Someone's missing" I thought to myself. On the other side of the island in Permian sediment there is trace fossil footprints of type of creature that one of the forerunners of the dinosaurs, but thats a story for another votecount.

Some of the coolest features at this section of beach are the fulgurites. Fulgurites are essentially fossilized lightning strikes!!! They are formed when lightning strikes sand. Modern examples can be found around the world in deserts but apparently the best place to find them is in golf courses where lightning has hit a bunker

I realized I forgot to mention this in the votecounts on Day 2 when we were visiting Drumadoon. The country rock here is actually Triassic not Permian in age.



These are the trace fossil footprints of an Isochirotherium, a small reptile related to the reptiles that evolved into dinosaurs. These reptiles later evolved into Crocodiles.
