15. there are 3 mafia-aligned players and 10 town-aligned players in this game. the mafia win condition is "you win the game when no town-aligned players are alive, or when the deadline is reached," and the town win condition is "you win the game when no mafia-aligned players are alive."
    
16. the game is divided into day phases and night phases and will begin with a day phase; day phases have a total deadline of 30 days, and night phases each have a deadline of 48 hours.
    
17. the length of each day will be decided by the timestamps that I see on the post that starts the day and the post that ends the day and will last the full duration of each minute in that time period. as an example, if a given day starts at 12:00 pm and ends at 12:03 pm on the same day, that day will be treated as having lasted 4 minutes. if there are any discrepancies between what your timestamps say and what my timestamps say, mine are the ones that will be used to decide things.
    
18. if 30 real-world days of day phases passes (that's 960 hours), the game will end and the mafia faction will win.
    
19. to vote, use bold text with the word "vote" followed by a colon and the username of the player you wish to vote for, or use the vote tag with the username of the player you wish to vote for inside. you do not need to unvote before voting for another player. please use the complete username of the person you're voting for to avoid any ambiguity.
    
20. a lynch will occur once the majority number of votes are for a player, and no lynch will occur if the majority of votes are for no lynch. either of these things will end the day.
    
21. if the day has ended but I have not made a post announcing the end of the day ("twilight"), this time does not count against the deadline even if players post during this time.
    
22. each night, each player may use one factional ability and one non-factional ability.
    
23. I am in the EST timezone. I will alternate each day between starting the day sometime in the morning and sometime in the evening. the purpose of this is to mitigate the effect that timezones affect the game.

the notice appeared on a cold March morning. the town had been sealed off from the outside world, and an explosive device had been rigged to destroy the whole town. the list of demands was far beyond the town's resources, especially given the lack of contact they have with the outside world. maybe it would have been possible for them to find the money, the helicopters, the celebrity endorsements, and the collector's edition novelty dishware with the rest of the country's help, but apparently the folks running this scheme hadn't thought through the fact that the town wouldn't just have all these resources on hand.

therefore, they decided, the best way to eliminate this threat was with a vote. the town would convene each day to vote on someone to be publicly executed, and if they're lucky, the chosen one would be one of the people behind this plot. it was barbarous, yes, but what other choice did they have besides barbarism? what choice would anyone have facing a situation like this? lives were on the line, and if a few innocent victims died along the way, maybe it would be worth it. maybe the survivors would be able to justify it to themselves.

"god help us all, we're going to find the bastards," someone says. who it was that actually delivered this promise has been lost to the annals of history, but one thing is certain: success or failure would come all too soon.

to answer a question, I cannot verify whether or not the mafia can communicate privately during the day.

additionally, as you may know, there has been a push toward only featuring marathon games on the site, and I find I ultimately agree with the motives behind this change, and it makes me wonder whether it's truly ethical for me to be running a game that can last up to a whole month. therefore, at the end of the current day, or 24 hours from now (whichever comes last), this game will change its name to "mafia minute", and you will have 1 minute left for the rest of the day phases. I believe this change will provide the best experience for all players in this game. you can read more about the changes coming to the site in this thread.

day 3 of this ordeal begins, and the question on everyone's mind: how will this ordeal end? as everyone wakes up, you come to the conclusion that the answer is "not yet", because as it turns out, not everyone actually wakes up. in fact, two more of you died last night. this is a troubling revelation -- you are far closer to failure than before.

the fact is, though, some of you aren't closer to failure; for a few of you, this is exactly what you needed to happen. there are killers walking among you, and this fact is terrifying to consider. you don't know how much longer you have, but the fact is, you need to start finding them, or they will overtake you.

a few of you, desperate, have started to try to devise a plan of escape. the rest of you feel no real belief that escape is possible; the town is truly completely sealed off from the outside world. "I have a friend in government in another nearby town," someone says, "the mayor of Echo Bay. I'm sure he can get us out of this mess, if I can just contact him."

you find the note after a few hours of searching; it appears to have been written several days ago in dark, thick ink.

"if I die," it begins, "know this: I tried to help bring this to an end. my only goal is to stop this menace, and I'll do it however I have to. if that means risking innocent life, well, then, how is that any different from what we're already doing? this thing that we're doing, it would be indefensible in the eyes of any court; it's mob justice. but if we are to survive, this is the path we must take. our operatives have successfully reacquired the delivery. we are still in the process of determining how it got out in the first place, and you should expect organizational changes in the coming days to ensure that no incidents like this happen again. to address some ongoing rumors, yes, we did plant an explosive device in the town set to go off if our operatives failed to retrieve the package in time. were our operatives in danger from this? no. they carried out their mission with precision. the correct response to this event is not to lose faith in this company but to remain assured that we are absolutely in control. the Echo Bay SmartBullet is the most innovative technological achievement in human history and will radically alter the way we carry out our work in the future. did we put the lives of our operatives in danger? so some thoughts from me on balance:

first, I didn't get this game reviewed, so if it's unbalanced, whoops that's my fault. my goal was to create a setup where the mafia had things to do besides just killing, but where the vast majority of their power came from the premise behind the setup. I viewed being a mafia neighbor as strictly a negative utility role, because even though it's mod WIFOM, it's still information that 2 townies have that the mafia doesn't really benefit that much from. additionally, I felt that the watcher is effectively only capable of finding the doctor; while it's possible that they could've found the other power roles by watching the right folks, it wouldn't have actually had any effect since they were 1-shot roles. I didn't anticipate something like being able to confirm that the kill wasn't prevented by a roleblocker, which is a neat side effect of how that role worked in this setup, so I felt that any result of "no one else targeted that player" was basically just the absence of information.

I think the fact that the cop 1)didn't use their power night 1, 2)fake claimed a negative utility role day 2, and 3)immediately requested replacement and got lynched probably hurt the town's chances a lot. that's a lot of potential town advantage thrown away.

if I were to run this again, here are some changes I might make: first, make one of the neighbors a neighborhood-exclusive innocent child (so everyone in the neighborhood receives explicit confirmation that this player is town, but no one outside gets that info). that makes sussing out who in the neighborhood might be mafia MUCH easier and also makes it harder for the mafia to kill either neighbor without the mafia neighbor looking suspicious to the other neighbor. second, I'd probably add 1-2 more 1-shot roles to the town. third, I might add another powerful town role that is also an enabled role in some way -- either tie it to the enabler that already exists in the setup or perhaps do something like have the role continue to function as long as all 3 mafia members are still alive.

despite the scum sided nature of the setup, though, I think in practice the premise of having a deadline for the game as a whole like this worked out really well. it's probably not necessary to get quite as granular as having it be down to the minute, but I'd love to see other experimentation with the format.
