Dr. Carolyn Fern edged her way down the alleyway, silently skirting the debris.

Even from this far away, she could hear their yelling, their hoarse invectives launched at eachother. She peeked around the corner, observing from the hopefully-safe distance. Despite the noise, some of them looked calm and rational, the kind you might not look twice at down at the University...but others were frothing at the mouth, capering this way and that before throwing themselves into the melee once more with unchecked, frenetic energy.

No, there was no doubt about it; this was the group.

She got out her notebook, trying to get it prepared without taking her eyes off of the group, not wanting to miss a moment of their interplay, the back and forth.

"What does it mean?" she asked herself as she scribbled into the notebook. No sooner had she looked back up than it became obvious that a surge of energy had overtaken the group, and that their whirling pandemonium now had some sort of darker, more sinister purpose, a definite sense of dire purpose. Indeed, a rhythmic chant could now be made out, growing louder and louder, and as Dr. Fern watched, stunned, one of the group was singled out, culled, and then set upon by the rest of the group, who soon had him helpless. He screamed like a man possessed, flailing with primordial purpose, less a man than an animal, but it was all for naught.

They took him before the altar, before which so many had given their lives; tens, no...hundreds, no...thousands, no...the number sacrificed before this altar was uncountable, stretching back beyond the aeons, and all the while the group was chanting, a livid sound that kept growing in strength until Dr. Fern had to clasp her hands over her ears lest the savage strength of the chant burst her eardrums, but still, she could make out the chant in perfect, shining detail, listening to it over and over as the poor man was killed in front of her eyes: "Lynch!...lynch!...lynch!...LYNCH!"

I. Rules

- The Golden Rules
1. The site-wide rules apply. Read them, know them, love them, but do not break them.
2. Play to win.
3. I reserve the right to change the rules at any time for any reason. If I do this, the rule changes will be publicly announced.

- The Inviolable Rules
4. If you’re unsure if what you’re going to do will break a rule, ASK.
5. We're all here to have fun. Tempers may flare, but avoid personal attacks and keep it civil.
6. Do not edit or delete your posts in this thread.
7. Do not quote or link private communications, including Role PMs, Quicktopics, etc. (Quoting is allowed wherever alignment is confirmed, such as scum or mason QTs.)
8. Do not use cryptography, invisible text, tiny text, or the like.
9. Do not use any form of provable randomness. Claiming you rolled dice and acting on that is fine. Using dice tags is not.
10. Do not impersonate or pretend to be the moderator.

If I edit a post, my words will be in purple. Do not use this color.

11. Do not talk about this game outside of this game thread until it is completed, unless I have specifically told you it is allowed.
12. Do not bring outside factors into this game. This includes making bets, promises of real life rewards, etc.
13. Do not pretend to break one of these rules. Pretending to break a rule will be treated the same as breaking the rule.
14. Breaking one of these rules may result in a modkill. If you are modkilled, you may become a Neutral Survivor, and thus automatically lose. Modkilling may or may not end the Day.

- The Activity Rules
15. Each player is expected to post at least once every 72 real life hours. If a player goes 72 real life hours without posting, they may be prodded. Prods will be publicly announced.
16. If a player does not respond to their prod within 24 real life hours, is prodded twice in the same Day, or three times in total within the game, they may be force-replaced.
17. If you will be V/LA, please alert me in the thread or via PM. I do not read the V/LA thread.
18. Each Day will have a deadline of fourteen real life days.

In the event deadline is reached before a lynch has occurred, no lynch will occur.

19. Each Night will have a deadline of two real life days. If a player has a night action, but does not submit a choice before deadline, they will perform no action.
20. I may extend deadlines in the event replacements must be found, at my discretion. This will be announced.

- The Voting Rules
21. Votes must be bolded to count, and in the format of VOTE: Magua. Abbreviations, missing punctuation, and misspellings will be accepted as long as the vote is bolded and it is obvious to me who is being voted for.
22. Unvoting is nice, but is not necessary.
23. Once a majority of votes is reached (# of players / 2 + 1, rounded down), that player will be lynched and dead as of the next vote count. No further votes or unvotes will be counted.
24.

If you are dead, that is it. Do not post. Not even a "Bah" post.

25. You may VOTE: No Lynch. It still requires a majority to end the Day before deadline.

II. Setup Rules and Information

1. This is a Smalltown game. All roles and mechanics are described. There are no hidden roles or mechanics.
2. Before alignment is determined, the player list will be randomized and the roles will be drafted in that order. Starting with the first player and moving down, each player will have 24 hours to choose an as-yet-unpicked role. If someone fails to choose within the 24 hours, they may still choose at any time, but the draft will continue and other players may pick in the meantime.
3. After everyone has chosen a role, alignments will be randomly distributed, with the exception of the player who chose Sister Mary (if any), who is guaranteed to be Town. The alignment distribution will be 9:3:1.

Cult Knowledge (FP):

You are secretly a member of the Cult of Cthulhu, working feverishly to make The Stars Right to unleash your master upon Arkham and the world. The Cultist team is XXX, YYY, and ZZZ.

Cult Communication (FP):

You may speak with the other Cultists in this Quicktopic at any point during the game.

Cult Night-kill (FA):

Each Night, one member of the Cult may choose a non-Cult player. That player will die. If you are the last remaining Cultist, this may be done in addition to using another (A) ability.

Eldritch Power (FP, 1-shot):

Any time before the end of the first Night, you may choose one of the following attributes, which you will keep for the rest of the game:

One Thousand Forms (FP):
You can only be killed by being lynched. Any other effect that would kill you is ignored.
Mask of Humanity (FP):
Any investigation performed upon you will return a result as if you were Town. In addition, your
Nyarlathotep Night-kill
will not show up on Joe Diamond’s reports.
Army of Minions (FP):
The
Nyarlathotep Night-kill
cannot be roleblocked or redirected.

If you do not submit a choice by the end of the first Night,

: You win when you are the only player left alive, or when all players are dead.

7. Endgame: In the event that a Day starts with only two players alive from two different factions, Nyarlathotep will win if alive; otherwise, the Cult will win.
8. There is no kill flavor.
9. Each player may perform only one (A) or (FA) ability each Night. If a player is the final living member of an anti-Town faction, they may perform both an (A) and an (FA) ability on the same Night.
10. Investigation reports do not include the name of the target. Investigative roles will know if they were roleblocked, but not if they were redirected.

Scrounge (A):

A Dark Wind Covers Arkham

The air was thick with smoke and ash; breathing became a chore, a backbreaking labor, and those who were forced to travel out doors held whatever they could to their faces to try to block out the black smog that strove to tear into their longs. Handkerchiefs held to faces, they would run outside, and yet still arrive at their destinations coughing, wracking spasms that would spew greasy phlegm about.

We gathered at the University's library, our clothing streaked with grime and dirt from the hellish weather outside. We were listening, some patiently, some anxiously, to Mandy attempt to talk about the problem that we faced. "Attempt," that is, because she could not speak more than a sentence without having to cough, each painful fit worse than the previous. Finally, we decided that the day was done, and urged her to get rest -- too many nights spent poring over the tomes at the University had already not been kind to her health. So it was agreed that we would reconvene in the morning.

Morning arrived, an orange smear across a drab, grey sky, and still the air smelled fetid, and the wind whispered almost recognizable words. We trudged back to the library, only to find that Mandy had attempted another late night, searching for some clue that could help us.

But it was not to be, because she had been viciously attacked, huge claw like marks across her chest and back, legs bent into unnatural angles, slumped over a book of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, her pooled blood having already laid waste to her notes.

We eyed each other, shifting nervously. It was clear that the evil we faced had decided to take a more direct hand. Outside, the wind continued to rage.

The sun struggled to shine through the grime that had encrusted the windows of the library. We had sequestered ourselves, and Mandy Thompson's ruined body, into one of the many reading rooms, intending to make short work of those who would stand against us.

But the day dragged on without a decision. Oil lamps had to be brought in to lighten up the room, since the storm outside prevented sufficient light from penetrating on its own. The stench of blood, oil, sweat, and grease assailed our nostrils as accusations were swung back and forth. The room seemed to soak up the smell, and then radiate it back to us threefold, so that it was no longer redolent of the aroma of parchment and learning, but only death and decay.

Finally, we could stand it no longer. Even through the encrusted window we could tell the light was fading fast outside, and no one relished the idea of being in the library where Mandy had met her unfortunate demise. In the blink of an eye, we had surrounded Darrell.

"Wait, listen to me, I know...," he stammered out, before Vincent Lee efficiently jabbed him in the arm with a hypodermic. Darrell spasmed repeatedly, white flecks forming around his mouth as he convulsed on the form to an unheard rhythm, and then it was done, and he was still.

The unearthly sigils tattooed on his body, underneath his clothes, showed that we had been right in our suspicions, and with this consolation we vacated the library to seek refuge from the unearthly weather as night fell.

Murderer at Large; Victims' Brains Missing

We awoke to an Arkham that appeared much more...normal. Weak sunlight filtered in through windows that were still grimy, but outside the sky was blue and birds sang in the trees. It was a warm day, smelling of hay and spring.

At least, it was until we tried to visit the General Store to pick up some coffee and various sundries, only to be faced with a boarded over door, and "Closed!" hastily scrawled across it in dripping black paint.

And throughout the town, we saw more sights that all was not right in Arkham. Derelict cars left in the streets. Buildings in the process of being vacated by scared men and women, glassy eyed children in tow.

Then there was the crowd gathered around Ms. Fine's residence. Deputy Dingby was unsuccessfully trying to disperse the rubberneckers, but was unable to contain the flood of gossip that went through the crowd. "I saw her when they brought her out, her chest had been ripped open..." "Heard them say that her brain had been removed..." "They have no suspects..."

Troubling.

We converged on Dr. Lee's establishment, to see if his medical expertise could get him in to perform an autoposy, and maybe shed some light on this investigation, but that was dashed when we stumbled into his office, and saw for ourselves the corpse with its heart, lungs, and brain messily removed.

Bob Jenkins had brought it on himself. From the beginning of the day, he'd started ranting.

Who would rant, we were forced to ask ourselves. A madman. And then, the follow up question: who would be a cultist? A madman. It was all so very obvious.

We turned on him with due speed.

He retreated from us, into the late Dr. Lee's office. "It's not me!" he shouted, as we cornered him behind a medical table. "I'm too unworthy to be of use to the Great Old Ones!"

As an ax was produced to put an end to his ramblings, he looked up, wild eyed. "Wait!" he implored. "Wait! I know things! I can tell you things! I've...seen...things!" He gazed at us with wild eyes.

For a beat, we waited. Then another. From his mouth, words began to flow. Then, silence. We looked around, at eachother, unsure, until "Skids" O'Toole gave a shrug, said, "Welp," and lay into him with an ax.

Afterwards, when the business was concluded and the mess cleaned as reasonably as could be expected, we went through Jenkins' personal belongings, and were bitterly disappointed.

Return to the Old Ways

A new day dawned; unexpectedly, it did so with a cock's crow, as out of place as that was here in the city. As we dressed, minor things went wrong. A button would fall out, or a zipper would jam. Briefcases wouldn't close right, and doors wouldn't lock. Worse yet, the telephones were out, so assembling everyone together became an arduous task.

Outside, it was worse. Cars stalled heaps in the middle of the street, gentle wafts of steam coming from the stilled engines the only signs that they had ever been anything other than a hunk of metal and glass. The presses at the newspaper were likewise quiet, with a veritable army of mechanics searching the immense rollers for whatever had caused them to sieze up and not turn.

Once we were all assembled, though, there came the spot of good news: everyone was present, with no one unaccounted for. Despite our knowledge that evil forces were amongst us, we managed to take a measure of good cheer from this news.

Finally, we assembled at the outskirts of Arkham, in the woods. It seemed a fitting venue, given the mood of the day, and as we rolled up our shirt sleeves to begin what had become referred to as "the business," we reflected that the wilderness might be more apt than we realized.

The day was yet early, and we were still assembling the clues that we had painstakingly collected when we were interrupted by Charlie Kane.

"I feel I should warn you," he began. We sighed. Charlie was a politician at heart, and he liked to talk. We tended to ignore him as a matter of course.

"I said," he harrumpted, "I feel I should warn you." He stopped and waited until he was sure that he had our attention, and with a collective sigh, we gave it to him.

Once he had our attention, he beamed, back in his natural environment. "I feel I should warn you," he repeated, for the third time, "That I'm going to kill you all."

We looked at him, some of us squinting, some of us with brows furrowed in thought, some of us already reaching for the rope.

"Death, destruction, madness, calamity. These are the only fates that I will allow for you," he added, in order to ensure that the message would not be misconstrued.

"Why are you telling us this?" one of us asked.

Charlie shrugged. "Why not? It's not like there's anything you can do about it. Doomed, and all."

There was a discussion about whether Charlie was serious, or had finally snapped the fragile band that tied him to reality. In the end though, either being actually intent on our destruction or just being a violent psychopath, we agreed that Charlie Kane was too dangerous to live, and with a modicum of fuss and muss strung him up. He didn't resist, just sat there grinning innately as we hoisted him by his neck. At the moment just before his neck would snap, he spat out, "Doomed."

Then he died.

The black form leaving his body was indisputable evidence that, regardless of anything else, he was not human, and with that black shadow fleeing the former shell of a body, and Arkham in general, we all felt uplifted as we called it a day.

It had been a good day.

Murder in the Museum

Still cheered by our victory yesterday, we went to slumber with expectations of pleasant dreams and a peaceful night.

However, this was not to be, for screams rent the air in the deepest time of darkness. Scrambling in our bedclothes, throwing open shutters to peer up and down the street, trying to identify the source of the commotion, all was confusion.

It took hours for the chaos to sort itself out, for the suspicious and paranoid to give way to the police, for witnesses to be interviewed and statements taken, for gawkers and rubberneckers to move out of the way and allow investigation to proceed.

It wasn't until after dawn had broken that it was traced back to the interior of the museum, to an exhibit of ancient Egyptian artifacts, entitled "Legacy of the Pharaohs".

There was found Roland Banks' body, spread out amongst the circle of black wax candles that had burnt down to their nubs. Even to the medical lay observer, it was easy to see the cuts on his chest where the heart, lungs, and other organs had been removed.

The newspapers gave all of those details, though at our insistence they left out the tentacle tracks that had been left in the pooling blood.

We investigated the museum, looking for clues.

Experts from Miskatonic University were brought onto the scene, examining the body, the artifacts, the various items of occult significance. They muttered to themselves portentously, nodded sagaciously, and intoned that this was a ritual of opening, of gateways.

That sounded bad.

We knew we had to stop it.

We cleared the experts and the police out of the museum, all of them only too happy to vacate the premises, and began on our own work. Being prepared, we had brought our own rope to perform it with. It didn't take long before that rope found its way around "Ashcan" Pete's neck.

"He's got a dog, and some of the victims looked like they were maimed by animals!"

"Can't account for his whereabouts, has no alibi!"

"I saw him lurking around the museum earlier!"

And then, of course: "You can't trust him. He's not of class."

With that, he was hoisted. Outside the windows of the museum, we could hear a lone hound dog give a mournful wail. We quickly ransacked his body, but did not find any incriminating tattoos, no marks of the unclean upon his flesh.

While we were still puzzling over this unfortunate development, the world ripped apart at the seams, and we fell into spinning black galaxies.

We awoke to swirling skies atop a blasted landscape.

Wind tore through cyclopean holes carved into even larger megaliths. We lay on a skewed angle, teetering sharply towards the water, where unclean water groped with the waves in our direction. We were just coming to when we saw the remains that had been Sister Mary disappear beneath the water, which frothed and turned a nauseating shade of red quickly thereafter.

A mountain drifted by slowly as we gathered on the desolate plain. Further on, sixteen (or was it fifteen? It was hard to count) suns cavorted in a pattern that was almost, but not quite, a double helix.

Finally, fingers were pointed at Dexter Drake. "You!" we screamed. "You're a magician!"

"Yeah? What of it?" Dexter retorted.

"Magic is evil...so therefore, you're evil!"

Dexter Drake didn't have a snappy retort to that one. Unfortunately, none of us had a length of rope in this other world, nor was there a convenient tree to hang a noose from in any case (well, there was one tree-shaped thing, but it ran away as we approached it). So we resorted to base fisticuffs, as common folk do. It was exhausting, but it was enough.

Sure enough, Drake's body was covered with pulsating tattoos that writhed underneath his flesh.

We were all congratulating each other on a job well done when everything when the air tore with a sharp crack. Through it, we could see the hazy outlines of Arkham, as through a far mist. We dashed through the gate, and it all went black again.

A Sandstorm!?

The blackness came, and an eternity later, it went, replaced with a suffocating darkness that still was not as black and empty as what had previously occurred. Grit choked our lungs, filled our mouths, wormed into our nostrils and ears, scratching painfully against all exposed skin.

Climbing up and out was an ordeal, and even the strongest amongst us was forced to their knees to heave wracked sobs, trying to expel the dust from their throats. We had indeed returned to Arkham, as could be made out by the few buildings we could see through the burning sands that tore through the streets. A noxious howl echoed through the desolate alleys, and we strove to find some measure of comfort against the storm. No building was left pristine by the storm, with windows smashed and shutters torn straight off, the damnable dust getting in everywhere.

The night was long and painful.

It was well into the afternoon before the storm ceased, leaving the streets choked with sand dunes that would have fit perfectly in the Sahara of darkest Africa. We strove to regroup, and counted ourselves lucky that only Michael McGlen was missing from the roster.

We faced each other, standing atop a hill made of sand-covered cars. This was it. Win or lose, this ended today.

Joe Diamond and Diana Stanley faced eachother amidst the sand dunes that had blanketed Arkham, caught in a face-off: Joe's .45 automatic looming large in comparison to Diana's miniature .22 Derringer, but at close range each would be equally deadly.

"Skids" O'Toole wavered on the sidelines, not sure who to support. Diana harangued him while keeping her small pistol aimed squarely at Joe; the detective, for his part, seemed detached from the ordeal, tersely answering O'Toole's questions but not otherwise interjecting, more intent on watching the reformed cultist than getting involved in conversation.

Finally, "Skids" made up his mind, hurling himself into action against Joe Diamond; as he tried to batter the large automatic out of Joe's hands, he could see out of his peripheral vision Diana Stanley coming up alongside the wrestling pair, carefully aiming her Derringer, tentacles erupting from her mouth as she chanted, "

"Skids" awoke from the nightmare in a cold sweat, sticking to the bedsheets, his body chilled even in the humid summer night let in through the open window. A few moments to steady his breathing, quiet his thumping heart rate, and then he rose from the bed, softly padding from one side of the small room to the other. As he paced back and forth, he repeated the words the doctor had told him to say, "That didn't happen, it was just a dream." Today was Friday; that meant that Diana would be coming to visit him as part of his treatment. The thought alternately alarmed and comforted him. He ruminated on the matter until he felt calmer, more in control. Finally, returning to the bed, he tried to settle down to sleep once more, interrupted only once by another asylum inmate's cries from their own personal nightmare.

As usual, a tremendous "thank you" to all of my replacements. As a mod, I'm quite glad I didn't need to get any after N1.

Was slightly annoyed that 2/3 of the Cult team was the same as from the first iteration of this game, but what are you going to do? Randomizers gonna randomize, yo.

A lot of Night action choices didn't make sense to me as a mod: a lot of people targeting Blue Bonnet, for instance, whose power is that they can redirect to someone else. GuyInFreezer choosing to let the abductor live. hitogoroshi choosing to busdrive instead of kill N3, when the only Town powers remaining were the abductor and the redirector, neither of which would ever know if they were busdriven.

GuyInFreezer's fear that PhDScar had targeted him N2 and his premature, "I'm scum, yo" was really dreadful (no offense, GiF); the slight pause in the game that occurred shortly thereafter was me verifying with him that he was, in fact, playing to win, which I judged him to be trying to do.
