The reader sits before the low table, tensely shifting the drawstring bag from hand to hand. The contents click and slide as the bag is turned over with each shift. She pauses and sighs, head tilted as though listening for something. Another deep breath, and the tension's release is almost audible. She drops the bag onto the table. A single flat stone falls out, onto the cloth scarves covering the tabletop. The upward facing side of the stone is blank, like a blind eye staring upwards.

It is early morning. Distant thunder rumbles, suggesting the gods are at work, moving lives about much like blind stones in a black bag.

This game will be in the form of a runecast. Each player is a unique rune stone. The stones will fall upon the table as the game progresses from day to night and back to day. The meaning of the runecast will become a little clearer as each new stone is revealed by lynch or by night kill.

2. You will be replaced if you either do not respond to a prod, or need to be prodded more than 3 times total. You may request for a player to be prodded at any time, but the less you request, the happier your mod is. Prods requested when a player has been absent for less than 48 hours do not count for replacement purposes.

3. If you're V/LA, make sure I know. If you are V/LA for more than a week, I'd suggest requesting replacement, but that's not required. If a lengthy V/LA is adversely affecting the game (e.g., if you are not able to post minimally during that time), then your mod may replace you.without penalty.

1. Dark Blue (#004080) is the color I will use for mod posts. Please don’t use this color or otherwise try to make your posts look like mod posts.

Rousing from her meditation on the Poetic Edda for the moment, the reader looks down at the low table covered by scarves. She notices one rune has been cast upon the blue field of the top scarf, but can't quite remember actually drawing a stone from the bag and tossing it. Her fingers have a tactile recollection of the smooth cool surface of the stone.

She stares at the scarf, mentally dividing it into concentric ovals split by a sort of compass rose of lines.

"The Nine Worlds of Yggdrasil," she murmurs to herself.

The first stone is in the outermost oval, on the western side.

"Vanaheim." It is the realm of relationships, balancing influences, and forces of continuity. She turns her gaze to the stone itself, and whispers "Fehu. Domestic cattle. Agriculture. Earned wealth. Plenty. Luck. It wasn't so long ago that cattle indeed represented hard-earned wealth that fortune could wrest away by storm, disease, drought. But fortune's hand is stayed, for now."

This bodes well, or at least it doesn't bode ill, she thinks. This first stone falling in Vanaheim suggests the web of stones that will fall one by one hereafter will paint a positive picture. A slight frown of concern crosses her brow. Will luck hold and smile throughout?

@Mod - would it be possible to get an extra day or two due to the posting slump happening over Labor Day weekend - since I've replaced in not every player has posted, and since I've been active many have only posted once, so I feel there's a reasonable argument that it's not been possible to get much dialogue going and I think it's also reasonable to suggest it's due to the holiday rather than player sucktitude.

But, even in the simplest proverbs may lurk a cautionary tale.

The stone is reversed, though, upside down. And this suggests more ominous meanings: Hidden dangers, turning away, hiding, and that which repels. This particular stone, fallen in Jotunheim troubles her deeply. "This seems like such a dire threat, revealed for what it is. But here, in the realm of confusion, it suggests revelation does not bring understanding."

Yes and I guess so? We probably showed as killing because she didn't investigate us until we were the last one remaining

The way it actually worked was that for a player with multiple abilities the ability cop results was randomly selected from their abilities.

If Ansuz had stuck with their original fake claim request (1-shot cop) they would have been found out either way the coin toss went for the investigation.

I think it was a swingy game and it was set up such that early claims would hurt town. Scum had a counter to almost everything this powerful town had going for them, and they made some really fortuitous decisions.

Re NAR, I would have revealed that I wasn't using NAR if anyone had asked.

I thought one of your questions would actually sink Ansuz today - when you asked if the ability cop could get factional abilities back. I said yes to that.

Thor, it may be that some of my decisions as a designer and mod were not mainstream ms, but they made sense to me and they were all things I've seen before at MS. I learned to play mafia, design games and to mod on other sites. I've acclimated to site meta, but I still get occasional surprises.

Scum redirector is a really powerful role. I had initially planned to make it a one-shot, but my reviewer felt that the scum team was underpowered compared to town and recommended that if I used a scum redirector I not nerf it.

But, I think Ansuz' fake claim was a game changer. I built some role redundancy into town in part to balance the possible number of early kills, and to fuel a little paranoia among the paranoia prone. When Ansuz counterclaimed the town vig, the redundancy may have played in their favor. It seemed like especially in the latter days of the game, set-up spec trumped scumhunting.

The other suggestion given to me about the setup was the conditional post restriction role. I had the slot penciled in to be something really over the top, and I think that role did fit the bill.

Town *could* have figured it out, but I think ffery should have been upfront about it (in her ruleset, for example). That is the one thing that changed the outcome of this game, and it was due to Mod influence, not player influence, and that's what makes it bad. While NAR isn't mandated, it is the most commonly used method of resolving night actions and might as well be site default. Not once did I consider that NAR wasn't being used, nor did anyone really (since no one asked), cause no one had the thought or inclination to think something different was going on. Mod choices and Mod influence heavily affected the outcome of this game.

I will probably do this in future games if I don't use NAR. I've played quite a few theme games here that didn't follow NAR so I don't assume it. But, I'm unhappy that not making it explicit may have impacted the outcome.

I once again want to thank everyone who played and who replaced in. As always, I listen very closely to the feedback I get about my games, and I was fortunate to have some extremely experienced players in this player list from the perspective of postgame feedback, as well as from the perspective of modding an interesting and complex set of interactions.

I had planned to design and run a large theme game next, but I think I'll try another mini theme first and see if I can do better on some of the issues you've brought up about this game.
