Mini 48 (Quantum Mafia) Day Five, Only one is left....

Post Post #0 (isolation #0) » Tue Jul 29, 2003 8:22 am

Post by mathcam »

Welcome to Quantum Mafia! Life was so easy as a sub-atomic particle. Floating in space, occasionally bumping harmlessly into other particles, watching some TV...nothing really going on. That was, of course, until the marauding anti-particles entered your side of the galaxy, marauding your towns and villages, showing no mercy, and taking no prisoners. Your town of Quantia, in particular, is known to have been infiltrated by several of the anti-particle bastards. Unfortunately difficult to detect, you realize that the only way to rid your town of these vermin is to do so with mob justice.

RULES POST

Overview

This post contains both a description of the game and a list of rules to be enforced, the latter of which was stolen from a mish-mash of players, but primarily MeMe.

First, there are 12 players in this game, each of which has been assigned a motive and a role.

Motive
Your motive signifies what team you are playing for. You either got a pro-town role that started with "You are a ____" where the blank was filled in with the name of a sub-atomic particle, or you were specifically told you were something else. This does not preclude the possibility that any daytime or nighttime abilities could be associated with any motives. In general, matter particles are pro-town and anti-matter particles are anti-town. Your PM will be clear about which you are.

Role
Your role described your nighttime or daytime abilities. The first thing to note is that the motives and the roles were assigned randomly and independently. The second thing to note is that the previous sentence was a lie. There were certain pairing of motives and roles that were simply non-sensical, so these did not occur. An example of this (in a typical game) would be a mafia mason. Other than these fringe cases, the first sentence is true: It's very possible for any or all of the town's cops/docs/vigilantes/etc. to be anti-town.

Rules
  • 1) All communication outside this thread by me will be by PM. So, if you're wondering when that role e-mail will be sent, it won't be.
    2) When sufficient votes to lynch are reached, the lynchee is dead and Twilight has begun. Posting is allowed during Twilight, though additional votes will not be counted.
    3) Once you are deceased, also decease from posting. (Though, as usual, a typical "Bah!" or the like is acceptable)
    4) Votes must be in bold. If you do not bold your vote, it will not be counted. Unvotes are appreciated, but not required.
    5) Please do not discuss this game out of thread unless your role specifically states you may communicate with other players.
    6) Do not edit/delete any post on pain of being disinvited from playing and/or smiting.
    7) If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period, please post a notice to that effect in the thread. Treat this game as a commitment to 12 others. Be considerate: don't leave us hanging.
8 ) Do not quote any private communication from me.
    9) Death scenes or other communication is always accurate unless I publish a retraction.
    10) No lynch is a possible vote. If a simple majority of the voters votes no lynch, then we proceed to twilight. Voting no lynch does not prohibit you from participating for the rest of the day.
    11) If there are four consecutive periods (where a period is either a night or a day) without a kill, the game will be ruled a draw unless I see convincing evidence to keep it going. For example, no lynch followed by no night kills followed again by no lynch and no night kill will probably be ruled a draw.
    12) If a player is targeted to be killed more times than the number of times he is protected, he will die.
    13) Remember that this is a game, intended to be enjoyable for everyone. I hope you play to win without giving in to name-calling or general meanness. I will give a warning PM to the offenders if it gets out of hand, and a subsequent infraction will be punishable by smiting.
    14) 72 hours deadlines will be posted if the day slows down, but this can be extended if I receive enough PMs with requests to the contrary.
    15) If I do something stupid, please indicate this to me privately. I may or may not have made a mistake.
    16) Names of motives will be revealed upon death, though perhaps not the entire role. The same goes for roles.
If you have any questions about your motive, role, what team you're on, how your role works, your social security number, etc., let me know. I'll be more than happy to let you know, and it will be more fun for all if everyone understands their roles.

On a final note, I'd like to thank Kelvin for proof-reading both typographically and schematically the layout of the game and for each of the roles, as well as giving me the idea to create the quantum mafia mini.

Having agreed that today would be the day you started the campaign to rid Quantia of these vermin, you wake up with a positive attitude. Ready to take back your town, you are....until you step outside. The present evil apparently knew of these plans as well, and beat you to it. The town is a little smaller than it used to be:

Kerplunk (Omega- particle, Supersymmetry cop), is nowhere to be found.

Rite (anti-particle mafia, EPR twin), is nowhere to be found.

mlaker (???, ???), is nowhere to be found.

Motive/Role Info for Rite:

MOTIVE:
Anti-particle Mafia

???

ROLE: Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) TWIN
You, along with one other player in the game, are an EPR twin. Any
time you are targeted by a night action, your twin is targeted
instead, and vice versa. This switch will not be told to the
targeter.

Motive/Role Info for Kerplunk:

MOTIVE:
You are a Omega- particle.

ROLE: SUPERSYMMETRY COP
Each night you choose two people, neither of which can be yourself,
and you will detect similarities and differences between them. I will
tell you whether or not they're in the same "group". The basic groups
are pro-town and anti-town, but: 1) If there are multiple anti-town
clans, they count as different groups. 2) If there is a mason group,
they are counted as being in a different "group" from non-mason
townies.

News Flash
:

The physics world was rocked today when physicist
Macros
succeeded in his search for the magnetic monopole. His newfound control over the space/time continuum is awe-inspring. Until his competitors catch up (tomorrow), the following is in effect:

Instead of voting people for the lynch today, members of the town may
nominate
other players to be lynched. Macros has sole control over whether or not they are lynched. He may at any time in the day decide to lynch any player that has previously been nominated, and this will end the day. The day cannot end without a nomination.

He may or may not have any additional powers today and/or for the rest of the game that you do not know about.

Okay, it's looking more and more like we're not going to retrieve anything, but if everyone could check their caches for the missing posts, I'd much appreciate it. Otherwise, continue discussing and if you feel like it, try to reconstruct some of the missing information.

The scene is surreal. The town is abuzz with the information that Macros, in his first attempt, managed to isolate the magnetic monopole. His control is over-whelming, and can do as he pleases. Deferring to the town for a choice of a sacrificial lamb, they wafflingly send up Stewie, who is quickly vaporized by the might of Macros.

Stewie, Kaon and Higgs Boson, has been "terminated."

Of course, in revealing his power, Macros' edge dissipates. The play of the game will return to normal tomorrow.

It is night. Get those night choices in. No deadline yet.

Stewie's Role Info:

MOTIVE:

You are a Kaon.

ROLE: HIGGS BOSON

You are the Higgs Boson, the particle that provides mass to all the other particles. Each night, you may collide with one other player. If you choose an anti-particle, both you and he/she die. If you choose a non-anti-particle, they are told that they feel a bump in the night, but nothing else happens.

Okay, all choices are either in or officially not submitted.

Unfortunately, the carnage is no less today than it was yesterday. You awake to find that

Someone (Schrodinger's Cat, Isolation Chamber), is nowhere to be found

and

Coolbot (Neutron, Experimental Physicist), is nowhere to be found.

Day begins. Six alive, 4 to lynch

Motive/Role Info for CoolBot:

MOTIVE:
You are a Neutron.

ROLE: EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICIST
You are an experimental physicist searching for the MAGNETIC MONOPOLE,
another role to be found in this game. You can search for him by
experimenting on people's roles at night: You choose two players and an
alignment (either pro-town or anti-town). If one of them is the
magnetic monopole and the other is of the alignment you specified,
then you succeed. You will be made master of space/time for a day (to
be described later). You may or may not be the only one searching for
the magnetic monopole.

Motive/Role Info for Someone:

MOTIVE: SCHRODINGER'S CAT
You are Schrodinger's Cat, a being whose properties cannot be
determined until they are measured. Your motive is not yet
determined. If you are first targeted by a pro-town cop or cop-like
role, you will join the pro-town forces. If you are first targeted by
an anti-town role, you will join their forces. If you are targeted by
both on the same night, you will die, so revealing your motive in the
thread might not be a good idea. If at any point every player
remaining in the game except you is on the same team, then you lose,
so your win condition is to be on the winning team before they are the
only team remaining.

ROLE: ISOLATION CHAMBER
Each night, you can select one player in the game. If that person's
role
is that of a particle, they are isolated from the rest of
the players and cannot be targeted by anyone. Anyone who attempts to
do so will be told that their attempt to target that player failed
(and will not get to rechoose), though you will not be notified if
that player was a particle or whether or not they were targeted.

All five of you awake in the morning. There has been no kills. Oh, except for Fletcher and mikehart, who both cannot be found. While commiserating their deaths (some less sincerely than others), a flash of light appears in the sky, as another particle appears out of thin air: You recognize him immediately as mlaker.

There are four alive, three needed to lynch. This should be good. :)

Excellent. I approve of these fast nights, especially the ones that happen before I even declare them.

The decision made is to play the odds and see what happens at night. There is no lynch, and all return to their homes, (though relatively few will stay there for long).

Night does not go well for kind mlaker.

mlaker, Gluon and tachyon, lost in the void.

Day 4, three alive, two to lynch.

Motive/Role Info for mlaker
:

MOTIVE:
You are a Gluon.

ROLE: TACHYON

You are a tachyon, a particle that travels backwards through time.
You are very elusive and difficult to target. You begin the game
non-existent and as long as you remain non-existent, you may not post
or vote in the thread. Each night you must decide whether or not to
enter the game. The longer you wait to enter the game, the more
powerful you'll be. Once you enter the game, you will remain there
until you are killed.

Here is a table of the bonuses you will receive if you decide on the
previous night to enter the game on the following days:
Day 1 - No bonus
Day 2 - You will be immune to the first time you are killed, day or night.
Day 3 - Same as night 2, plus you will be allowed a free
investigation of a player in the game the night you enter.
Day 4 - Same as night 3, plus you will get complete information
about the existence and size of the remaining killing groups.

You will get no additional bonuses after day 4.

Role/Motive Info for Someone (2)/JereIC
:

MOTIVE:
You are a Muon.

ROLE: MAGNETIC MONOPOLE
You are the magnetic monopole, a particle highly sought after by
physicists. Your strength derives from the fact that you are
mysterious and unattainable. You role's power is to be immune to the
first 4 night kill attempts made on your life. You will not be
notified when these are used, and if you are targeted by two different
killing groups in one night, that will count as two uses of your
immunity. You will lose your ability if you are discovered as the
magnetic monopole (there
are
players looking for you).

And with that someone is taken to the cleaners and beat like a red-headed step child. (i.e. he's dead.)

Night falls, and but two remain in the small town of Quantia. They peruse the town, admiring their self-made corposes, and finally stumble into one another. mole speaks first:

- So...you're evil, right?
- Yeah. You?
- Yeah.
- I bet you have a kill protection that will stop me from killing you.
- Yeah. You?
- Yeah. So I guess it's a draw.
- I guess so.

Both parties agree and turn to walk away, off to ravage another town and its citizens. A smirk appears on mole's face. "Liar!!!" he screams, and he turns and shoots Wacky in the Backy. Wacky crumples. Mole takes a nice nap and awakes to find that

Wacky (Antimatter mafia, suspended matter), lost in the void.

SERIAL KILLER MOLE WINS!!!

Role/Motive Info for Wacky
:

MOTIVE: ANTIMATTER MAFIA
You are an antineutron, a member of the antimatter mafia. Together with your partner, antiproton rite, you may kill one person each night. You must decide which of you is doing each killing.

You have the following goal that your partner does not know about, but that you should probably share with him/her: You are searching for the MAGNETIC MONOPOLE, another role in this game. If you are the one of the two of you chosen to do the killing at night and you target the magnetic monopole, then your team will receive a bonus. You may or
may not be the only one searching for the magnetic monopole.

The last thing you need to know is that there is either a proton or a neutron (but not both) as a townie motive in the game, so that role claim may or may not be safe. If either of you targets your anti-particle, you randomly target someone else in the game, including
possibly your partner. The magnetic monopole role is not matched with your antiparticle.

ROLE: SUSPENDED MATTER
You are a suspended particle. Any time you are targeted at night, you will be told of the player targeting you. Be careful, there are several roles in this game, both good and bad, that can target people at night.

p.s. Someone targeted you last night, Wacky. It was mole. :)

Role/Motive Info for mole
:

MOTIVE: POSITRON
You are a positron, an antiparticle serial killer. You may kill one person each night. You are immune to the first time you are killed at night. You are also searching for the player with the SCHRODINGER'S CAT role: if you target the player with that motive before any other
roles looking for it die, the player with the Schrodinger's Cat motive will join your side. Last, to help offset the difficulty of being a serial killer, I am giving you the information that there is no electron in the game, so the townie motive "electron" is safe to claim. The mafia are not getting any such information.

ROLE: Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) TWIN
You, along with one other player in the game, are an EPR twin. Any time you are targeted by a night action, your twin is targeted instead, and vice versa. This switch will not be told to the
targeter.

Congrats mole, and thanks for playing, everyone. I had fun watching it, and I hope you had fun playing it. I'd appreciate feedback...things to think about:

- the split between roles and motives
- mlaker's backward-time-traveling role
- Various things that various roles are searching for (the magnetic monopole and Schrodinger's cat)
- handicaps for the serial killer (one free kill protection and a "safe" role claim), and partial safe role claim for the mafia.
- the different finding conditions for the physicists
- anything else you can think of

Yeah...though not evident from the morning scene, shots were fired in both directions.

Wacky even mentioned that he thought you had one kill protection. I wondered why either of you didn't try to convince Someone to lynch the other.

You had hinted the physicist might have more powers past the first day. Where there any?
Nope. There were several things in people's role that I hinted at that weren't in the game. I like how it worked, and I think it will become a regular policy of mine.
Reading the two physicist roles, I think Macros's was easier than mine.
Though this is certainly possible, I think you only feel that way because he got lucky on day one. He picked two people and those two people just happened to precisely coincide with the two people the SK and mafia chose to kill. If he had randomly picked two other people, he would have had to try to get two specific people lynched without looking suspicious. That would be difficult.

Your role was basically "Check one player every night", though a little bit weaker. It's really hard to evaluate, but I tried to balance the two closely, and ended up thinking they were aboute even.

Yeah, that was unfortunate for the mafia that they killed one of themselves the first night. An amusing quote, in hindsight:
CoolBot, on page one, wrote:Interesting. At least two killing groups. One of them probably's a SK, and I think it should be noted it's not neccessarily the one that got Rite. Afterall, the mafia could've targeted his twin.
They sure could've.
