At any time during the day or night, any player may spend 3 XP to upgrade their role, providing a bonus that is unknown until the upgrade is made. Each player can only upgrade once, and the upgrade takes effect at the end of the phase in which it was submitted, at which point the player will learn their new role. Players with upgraded roles will flip with both their original role and their upgraded role.

[Rolecop]
During the night, any player may pay 1 XP to learn the base role (without upgrades) of another player. If this action fails for any reason, you will receive "Your action failed, and you did not receive a result." This is an active ability, and cannot be used in conjunction with another active ability.

[Vigilante]
During the night, any player may pay 4 XP to kill another player. This is an active ability and cannot be used in conjunction with another active ability.

[Lynch]
All players may vote to lynch another player using VOTE: Player or
Vote: Player
. Once a majority is reached, the day ends and that player dies.

[Loyal]
During the night, any player with a personal action (NOT one granted from another Public Mechanic) may pay 1 XP to make their action Loyal. That action will fail if used on any player not aligned with the user.

Setup Specific Rules:

I. XP
Each player in this game will have a certain amount of XP. XP can be gained by some night actions, and can be spent to power abilities. Each player starts with 1 XP, and players can never have less than 0 XP. Players are always aware of how much XP they have.
It is public knowledge that the Mafia's factional kill costs XP to carry out.

II. Training
Each player, by default, is allowed to Train during the night. This takes the place of another action and cannot be used alongside any action. When a player Trains, they gain 1 XP. This is an action and can be blocked or seen with Follower, but it is not considered a visit and therefore cannot be seen by Tracker, Motion Detector, Voyeur, or Watcher.

III. Public Mechanics
This game has a certain set of Public Mechanics. Public Mechanics are guaranteed to be in play for the whole game once they are put into play, and different game events may cause new Public Mechanics to go into play throughout the game. The following Public Mechanics are in play at the beginning of the game:

There is something new today!

Today, players may vote to put a new Public Mechanic into play. As always, once put into play it will remain in play the whole game. The possibilities are:


[Self-Watcher]
During the night, any player may pay 1 XP to learn who (if anybody) targeted them. If this action fails for any reason, you will receive "Your action failed, and you did not receive a result." This is an active ability, and cannot be used in conjunction with another active ability.

[Rolecop]
During the night, any player may pay 1 XP to learn the base role (without upgrades) of another player. If this action fails for any reason, you will receive "Your action failed, and you did not receive a result." This is an active ability, and cannot be used in conjunction with another active ability.

[Neighborizer]
During the night, any player may pay 1 XP to neighborize another player. They may choose whether to add the target to an existing neighborhood created with this ability or create a new neighborhood. There is no limit to the number of neighborhoods a player can be in. This is an active ability, and cannot be used in conjunction with another active ability.


To vote for a Public Mechanic, use the VOTE: tags. The Public Mechanic vote will be kept separately from the block vote, and the Public Mechanic vote with the most votes at the end of the day (plurality) will be put into play.

A rolecop result returns only role and not alignment. The result could be alignment indicative if the target has an alignment-specific role, but a goon would come up as Vanilla.

But that's not all!

Today, as before, players may vote to put a new Public Mechanic into play. As always, once put into play it will remain in play the whole game. The possibilities are:


[Conditional Deathproof]
At any point, if a player would die with at least 3 XP, that player will instead survive and lose 3 XP. They will not be notified if this occurs (although they will know that they lost 3 XP).

[Blessing]
If this Public Mechanic is unlocked, every player will immediately gain 1 XP. After that, it has no further effect.

[Loyal]
During the night, any player with a personal action (NOT one granted from another Public Mechanic) may pay 1 XP to make their action Loyal. That action will fail if used on any player not aligned with the user.


To vote for a Public Mechanic, use the VOTE: tags. The Public Mechanic vote will be kept separately from the block and lynch vote (not a typo this time :]), and the Public Mechanic vote with the most votes at the end of the day (plurality) will be put into play.

If someone was roleblocked what would the text be for an action

If you target player A with a loyal action but they're not loyal IE not on your side what would the text be
The action would be considered failed in both cases.

By default, an investigative role would receive "Your action failed, and you did not receive a result." in both cases.

Second order of business: my thoughts.

Well done, scum. This was not an easy setup for you, despite the extremely delayed introduction of lynching. Yurkin rocked it by taking out your strongest role just at the point when he was about to become even more powerful. One of the things I was concerned about was the fact that the setup was extremely conventional and therefore too many people might be towncleared based on claims. Town had one main investigative role and one main protective role, and one role was duplicated for town and scum, and scum had a roleblocker which is an extremely predictable scum role (with an extra ability that overlapped with Ginngie's, too, though nobody noticed that). Props to the scum for creating enough confusion to blow all of those (correct) assumptions out of the water.

And fyi, my reasoning behind having two dead threads was "why the hell not". Having to put everything in spoiler tags just in case somebody doesn't want to be spoiled is dumb. So while I expected everyone to go to the spoiled thread eventually, I gave them a chance to say stuff before being spoiled if they so chose.

Third order of business: the setup.

This was an extremely ambitious setup with several novel mechanics and at times during the game I felt like I bit off more than I could chew. However, I don't think any serious flaws in the game design were revealed. The biggest crisis I had was the realization, after the game had started, that somebody getting RB'd when trying to vig was absolutely horrible, both balance-wise and enjoyment-wise. So since I had never specified what would happen to the XP if a paid ability was RB'd, I retconned in a rule that refunded XP only in case of the vig. Fortunately, this issue never came up in the game, as I would have had to do even more awkward sidestepping of questions.

I want to address mastina's account of what happened around the start of Day 6, where mastina first claimed to have not received the result she was owed from me and then later received it, and she also claimed to have had a PM conversation with me where I refused to answer her questions directly but ended up accidentally revealing the information she was looking for. Aside from the last part about me accidentally revealing the answer to her question (which I believe was rhetoric to support her claim), this is all true. I did forget to send her result initially, and I responded to her redirector questions as though she were town (which in most cases led to me saying "I can't say).

I'd love to hear people's thoughts on the setup as this was my first attempt at creating a complicated setup centered around an original mechanic. Clearly I aimed high, and while I don't think the setup mechanic was brilliant or extremely well executed, I'm pretty happy with how it was received and how well people seemed to understand the idea behind it. If people like the idea, I may take what I learned from this game and create a sequel with the same mechanic that hopefully has a lot of the kinks ironed out.

Regardless, I would really like to hear what people thought about the XP mechanic itself, the other related mechanics like training and the Public Mechanic votes, and the setup design and execution (as well as balance and swing) as a whole. Any feedback you can give would be much appreciated :]

Wow, thanks, that means a lot to me. :]

I'll definitely start brainstorming for a sequel. I have a few different ideas on my modding agenda and I don't know which is gonna be the next to materialize, but if/when I do run the sequel to this, I'll make sure to notify anyone who expressed interest. And if anyone wants to be part of the design process (I know Ghostlin had some suggestions in the dead thread), I will certainly not refuse extra help!
