Otters live their lives happily, playing and loving one another freely. Otters are loved by all, something that inspires bitter envy in ostracized animals. Both sharks and tigers are tired of the favoritism. No on kills otters. No one hates otters.

So they'd just be otters. The tigers dyed their fur brown; the sharks rolled in mud. Independently, the sharks and tigers infiltrated the otter community of Rompville, doing their best to blend in. Ever trusting, the otters of Rompville had always allowed newcomers into their community with open arms. They accepted the new otters, even if they were a bit large, and life resumed as usual.

But sharks and tigers have certain urges and needs that cannot be ignored. Before too long, the perfect peace of Rompville was disturbed...

General


  1. Be familiar with the sitewide rules and guidelines.
  2. Personal attacks will not be tolerated. Use of homophobic, racist, sexist, or any other derogatory slurs falls under this rule. Keep it civil.
  3. Play to your win condition.
  4. Unless otherwise specified in your role PM or by me, you may not communicate outside of this thread while the game is running.
  5. Do not quote or post any screen captures of any private communication to which you have access. This includes game-related PMs, QuickTopics, and instant messaging logs. Paraphrasing is okay.
  6. If it is not visible to the naked eye, do not post it. This includes, but is not limited to: invisible text, tiny text, encrypted text, and text hidden within tags. Spoiler text, however, is allowed, as long as it is used within reason.
  7. If you have the ability to edit your posts, don't use it in my game.
  8. Regular
    dark purple
    - and boldface
    maroon
    -colored text are reserved for the moderator. All other formatting is fair game with the provision that you do not impersonate me or post in hidden text, as covered in another rule.

Activity


  1. Prods will be issued to players if they have not posted within a 72-hour period. Players who have been prodded have 48 hours to respond
    in the game thread
    before a replacement is sought.
  2. Players who have been prodded 3 times are subject to replacement without further notice. After three prods, replacements will happen upon my discretion. Prod timers re-set with each new game Day.
  3. Posting content is an absolute must. If a player posts nothing but prod dodges for an entire game Day, he or she will be subject to replacement upon my discretion.
  4. If you anticipate being away for at least 48 hours, please PM me AND post a V/LA notice in the thread with the expected date of your return.

Pre-Game


  1. During Pre-Game you will receive your role PM. Confirm by PM, as instructed.
  2. Confirmed players will be bolded on the player list. When 22/25 players have confirmed, Day 1 will begin.
  3. The mafia may discuss in their QT during pre-game until I instruct them not to.

Day


  1. Days will have a fixed deadline of 14 real-time days. Deadline extensions will be granted only in extreme circumstances.
  2. Players may vote to No Lynch; a no lynch will occur if a majority of players vote for no lynch or if no majority is achieved by deadline.
  3. Lynch is achieved by simple majority.
  4. Once majority is reached, no further votes or unvotes will count.
  5. Votes should be on a separate line and flushed left, and MUST be bolded (e.g.,
    Vote: Amrun
    ). The same applies to vote revocations (e.g.,
    Unvote
    ). Unvotes are preferred but not necessary when switching votes (e.g.,
    Unvote, Vote: Amrun
    ). Use of the vote tags (e.g., VOTE: Amrun) is optional. Abbreviations are okay as long as it's clear for whom the vote is made.
  6. If I think it's a vote, it is a vote.
  7. All players, including the lynched player, are allowed to discuss in twilight phase until I post the death scene.
  8. Dead players may make one "Bah!" post that contains no game-related content, but it must also contain a picture of a sheep and/or the word "OTTERCOCKS"

Night


  1. Nights in this game will have a 72 hour deadline, and I reserve as much as 24 hours after that to process actions and post the flavor scene.
  2. Players who have a night action to submit must send it in before the announced deadline. I accept provisional actions up until the announced deadline, at which time I will use the last action submitted.

Moderator Actions


  1. Flavor is for entertainment purposes only and has no significance in the game.
  2. If there is an error in the vote count or something similar, bold your concern in the thread. Please PM me for all other issues.
  3. Violations of these rules will result in consequences. Pretending to violate these rules will also result in consequences. What those consequences are depend on the severity of the action and on the game state.
  4. Any situation not covered above will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

I reserve the right to add, modify, or remove rules as necessary. I will notify you of all changes in the thread.

Please PM me if you need clarification on anything in the rules.

Rompville was getting along happily with its new citizens.

During the day, everyone played as usual and went to bed tuckered out.

But upon waking the next morning, the otters discovered something terrible.

Someone had killed Trumpet of Doom and IceGuy! They looked gnawed on, almost as if someone had eaten them.

How horrible! Who could have done such a thing?

Guy_Named_Riggs struggled to appear to be an otter.

His playing made him stand out, it seemed. The tigers on island Sumatra, his homeland, just played too vigorously for the otters of Rompville.

Guy_Named_Riggs didn't react well to the criticism of his rough playing, which Rompville thought might be indicative of an underlying violent nature. Guy_Named_Riggs wasn't trying to be rough or violent, though. He was just trying to find a new home, since the people on his island had built an apartment complex over the jungle he was born in. But he got so angry about the accusations that he slipped and revealed his true nature.

After that, he felt so bad that he left Rompville quietly, his head hanging in humiliation.

After kicking out a tiger, Rompville felt safe.

They went to bed feeling accomplished and rose to a new day feeling refreshed.

But upon waking, the otters realized their sense of safety was short-lived.

Someone had killed hohum and zMuffinMan! Just like Trumpet of Doom and Ice Guy, someone had eaten them.

Apparently Guy_Named_Riggs wasn't the only nefarious character in their midst.

Nobody Special didn't really feel like part of the group.

Some of the other otters picked on him, and some otters he didn't like at all and just plain avoided.

The Otter Committee convened to discuss him.

They decided that Nobody Special was simply too anti-social. What if it was because he was hiding his nefarious intentions?

The Committee decided to evict him from Rompville, just in case.

Fate was playing a bit too hard with the otters. This made the otters immediately wary, after Guy_Named_Riggs, but Fate told a story about how everyone in his family had extra long teeth and liked to play rough. The otters reluctantly bought it, unwilling to evict anyone else after sending Nobody Special away.

But then, something happened to one of the otters Fate had been playing with.

First, they were just playing with a ball, but then...

Only one thing was going through everyone's minds.

Long teeth indeed! Fate tried to argue that it was just his hereditary trait, and that it was an accident, but the Otter Committee didn't buy it. They evicted him.

Once the decision was made, Fate reveled in it.

He was a shark and he hoped all the stupid otters died!

But even Fate couldn't take on all of Rompville by himself. He swam away slowly, let his fine rise above the water in intimidation.

As soon as Fate disappeared over the horizon, Rompville celebrated.

With both a tiger and a shark successfully evicted from Rompville, the otters' faith was renewed ... a little bit.

They'd met with some success, but still, they remembered the massacre from the night before...

The otters began to look around to see who was missing.

Oh no... where was Elmo TeH AzN?! He was the smartest otter in Rompville, forever scribbling away at his calculations, though no one ever knew what he was calculating.

They searched and searched and finally confirmed their worst fears... He was dead.

But in the search, they realized that someone else was missing, too:MrBuddyLee.

This greatly distressed Rompville, for MrBuddyLee was a very young otter beloved by all. He loved to play and would even keep people up at night to play with them.

When they found his body, they all took a moment to remember MrBuddyLee.



This was a terrible tragedy.

The otters of Rompville must be safe again.

Some otters were discouraged, but other otters stood up to them:

They would root out those tigers and sharks. They had to.

Rompville was on a mission to evict the tigers and sharks, and they were SURE that Thor665 was one of them.

It didn't take long at all for the Otter Committee to decide to evict - why, Thor665 didn't even get a say in it!

In preparation for the impending eviction of an enemy, one otter began to play the piano.

When Thor665 realized what was going on, he was confused. Why was this happening? And how did that guy learn to play the piano?

After another unsuccessful eviction, the otters were wary to greet the day...

Some hid rather than search for the bodies of their dearest friends.

While waiting for the scaredy otters to come out of hiding, they waited and waited for Sundy ... and waited ... and waited. Oh, bugger, it seems he had been too scared to come back!

The sharks noticed that the otters were beginning to get demoralized. They smelled victory within their grasp.

With that in mind, Vi had an announcement to make.

"You can't do anything about it, Rompville!" she taunted. "Neener neener neener!"

No one could believe it. Vi was so gentle! How could she be a shark?

But after the shock wore off, the otters of Rompville quickly turned on Vi.

It wasn't too long before Vi was defeated.

But as Vi swam away majestically, they realized that Vi HAD been gentle. She hadn't fought back at all. But still, she harbored fugitives, so she had to be evicted.

The otters were refreshed by the eviction of a shark and eager to see what had happened overnight.

They prepared themselves and began to search.

When they found BBmolla's body washed up on shore, they weren't surprised.

At first, the otters of Rompville arose and looked around... was everyone here?

But before the search began, camn cried out.

They rushed to her; she had been shot in the night. She was dead before anyone could help her. The otters couldn't believe what had just happened...

But they kept searching, only to find the remains of Iecerint, who had been eaten.

Instead of being upset, DrippingGoofball and Quilford began to do a very strange dance.

All of the others realized it at once: they were tigers! redFF and RedCoyote looked at one another, knowing that the tigers outnumbered them.

Then, redFF revealed his fin and swam away in defeat.

Upon realizing his fate, RedCoyote dissolved into hysterics. He was going to be eaten!

DrippingGoofball and Quilford looked at RedCoyote, licking their chops.

They ate RedCoyote for breakfast! They were full, so they rested a bit.

They began to imagine their future lives in the new Tiger refuge camp, which they decided to call Strikeville. More tigers would come, and then...

Strikeville would become a happy place for tiger families.

Individual Ability:
You have no ability besides the ability to vote in-thread each day.

Factional Ability:
You and your partners (Guy_Named_Riggs and Matias) share an ability to target another player for a night kill each night. Your team must choose at least one member to perform the kill. I will assume the player that submits the kill is performing the kill unless otherwise specified.

Tigers sometimes share kills with one another. As long as at least two tigers are alive, you may share your kill in order to eat it completely. In other words, if two tigers target the same player successfully and the player dies, that player's alignment and role will not flip. Only the tigers learn the identity of the dead player.

If two tigers target a player for a kill but one is impeded (for example, stopped by a roleblock or redirected), the target still dies but flips publicly. If three tigers target a player for a kill but only one is impeded, the target dies with its role remaining secret. Any protection on the kill target will stop your kill no matter how many tigers attempted the kill.

Might I suggest not doing it again? for the reason listed below--

Talking of which, you basically required Town to lynch three scum at minimum, with more more likely. This game ended after six game Days
with three scum lynched
, two of which basically
asked
for it. When I said Town had no chance, I -meant- Town had no chance.


It was certainly an experiment in balance, but I think town had a lot of compensating power - and I do mean a lot. Scum got very, very lucky in its NKs.

You are also neglecting the fact that tigers could kill sharks, and that there were several town-originating kills that could kill tigers.

Perhaps a few more VTs would have helped. I considered starting at 26. I was worried about the game filling, but slots went like hot cakes, so I shouldn't have been.

I wanted to do something VERY DIFFERENT, and I succeeded. I do want to talk about the failings and the good parts of this set-up, once I post the role PMs.

Crime Scene Investigotter - 1-Shots Coroner and DNA Analyst

You've always fancied forensic analysis and think your ottertastic skills that make you so good at catching fish would also serve you well in the crime scene investigation field. Sadly, though, being a forensic analyst is not really a viable career option for an otter - but with all the killing going on, now is your chance to show the otter community what you are made of! You may investigate any dead player, even if only trace amounts of him or her remain. Through diligent private study, you have acquired the ability to perform two tests. From the first test, you will learn the role and alignment of the target, even if only trace amounts remain. For the second test, you may name three suspects whom you think may have killed the target. You will test your suspects' DNA against the evidence at the crime scene; if any or all of them visited the target the night (s)he was killed, you will be notified. There is a time limit on performing the tests: the target must be dead no longer than one night, or the evidence will decay too much to be useful. Since you are doing all of this out of pocket, as it's just a hobby, you only have the resources to perform each of these tests once. Only you know just how many fish you had to trade to make this happen.

"Thank you, Maggie. This is perfect," you lie, trying not to hurt her feelings.

Oh, well. You nestle into the boot to take a nap. It's better than nothing, after all.

You ask her to keep an eye out for anything that might help you search for sharks or tigers hunting otters.

Maggie chirped happily and flew off, turning her head from side to side in ardent search for something fitting her dear friend's description.

You wait and hope some silly tourists drop some useful things for you, but when Maggie returns, she seems sheepish.

She drops a packet of balloons at your feet, apologizes, and flies off to her nest, barely looking you in the eye.

At first, you're angry. How are you supposed to find sharks or tigers with BALLOONS? Maggie should know better!

Maybe you can figure something out... You open the packet and start to brainstorm.

You've been playing with the balloons half the night before you realize that Maggie just couldn't find anything and wanted to cheer you up. She's such a good friend.

This set-up was so fun to see play out. I loved how neither of the scumteams ever correctly predicted the set-up, not once, until DGB on the very last night.

As I said before, I think if I ran it again, I would add a couple of more VTs.

The tigers didn't use their power as I expected them to; they discounted the value of the janitor. But I thought they would use it to target power roles and give themselves rock solid roleclaims, which I saw as really useful. Or, I thought they would go for sharks and try to obscure it to leave the town chasing their tails, but they actively chose not to do that.

The tigers got really discouraged because they didn't know they were BP to sharks - but I had anticipated that they would assume the set-up was reasonably balanced.

Though perhaps scum vs. town wasn't as balanced as it would be optimally, I DO think the scumteams were pretty balanced between each other.

Seeing a tiger win after a Day 1 tiger lynch was pretty exciting, and pretty ironic, after the forum crash. Ha.

camn, don't feel too bad! You were missing the Fate lynch, which was instrumental, and working with the archive at all was difficult at best. I think you did a good job, for someone put in your position. I was pretty terrified of post-crash replacements, and you definitely got the short end of the stick. I was actually really glad when Thor was lynched because I was almost positive he was flaking. He picked up his death PM thinking it was a prod, so it wasn't QUITE as bad as I feared, but he was too busy to contribute properly in any case.

If anyone is inclined, I would love some constructive criticism, design-wise. I invented some roles and included some very rare roles, along with some factional roles and a couple of supremely normal roles, like town roleblocker.

Basic idea of the design:

Tigers had one public collective power role (janitor) that is a double-edged sword: janitored kills can provide the tigers with ironclad fakeclaims and burdens the town with WIFOM, but increases the chance that tigers can be tracked etc. This ended up frightening the tigers out of using this ability, most of the time, despite the fact that actual roles that threatened tigers choosing to janitor were rare (though of course they would not know that). Tigers also had a secret collective ability: being bulletproof against sharks. The idea behind all of the abilities being collective is that I did not want one tiger to be any more important than the others. I also wanted to test out these two new mechanics.

Sharks were designed to be very different than the tigers. Unlike the tigers, there was a large degree of difference in importance for different sharks. One shark couldn't kill and was least valuable; two had power roles. I wanted to see if this would create power dynamics in thread and out. The scum didn't fight much, but I'm sure Vi's role is a big part of what prompted her to throw herself off of the rafters, as it were. The role cop was put in as a complement to the tigers' janitor ability; the framer was put in to counter the shark cop. The weak goon, though a surface disadvantage for the sharks, was actually a sort of godfather for the psychiatrist (psychologist) and therefore a secret benefit as well.

For town, I wanted the power roles to be different and fun while synergizing with the scum abilities without giving too much away. Since the sharks got extra numbers, I needed to give town a good way to foil them; that was implosion, the shark cop. This role's complement, the tiger doctor, was meant to be a foil for the tigers but not the sharks, as the sharks already were at a kill disadvantage with not being able to kill tigers. The roleblocker was a powerrole that targeted the sharks more than the tigers, because the tigers could send two or more people for a kill, meaning that if one was roleblocked, the kill would still go through. The pyschiatrist/psychologist, though weak, targeted tigers because by the end of Night 1, it was possible that all three tigers would return "guilty" while only one shark would. The mason lovers matchmakers were another double-edged sword; their ability was powerful, though required a flip to be useful, and their masonry was a tool that could be used to a strong pair's advantage - though all weakened, of course, by the fact that they were lovers. The fisherman was essentially a weakened JOAT whose skills were the most powerful in the game as they weren't at all factional, but he couldn't plan ahead as he would not know if or when he received his powers. The coroner and DNA analyst was a very powerful role that targeted tigers primarily, but also had the potential to catch sharks. Test 1 (coroner ability) had the potential to catch a tiger in a fakeclaim but was useful for town regardless, and Test 2 (DNA Analyst) had the potential to catch the ENTIRE TIGER SCUMTEAM AT ONCE (though this was astronomically unlikely). As it turned out, Elmo died using Test 1 and never used Test 2. The poisoner was easily the swingiest, and most pivotal, role for the town. Its kills could not be prevented except by the town roleblocker and could not be predicted; the poisoner could kill sharks OR tigers.

Thoughts on this, and how it worked out, and anywhere I went wrong?

MBL, thanks for playing. Is "fancy" good or bad? I welcome talks of scumhunting.

The town did a good job of scumhunting GNR on Day 1, and for the most part abysmal after that. DGB primarily drove the Fate wagon.

There were two extremely interesting plays in this game: redFF claiming shark miller and being counterclaimed tiger miller by TOWN, and Vi claiming shark.

Watching those two plays unfold was really glorious, as well as watching sharkscum Fate and tigerscum DGB go after each other and both be right. That play was really critical; if DGB had lost that 1v1, I think sharks would have probably won as Fate never would have been forced to claim and would have had credit from pushing DGB.

David Xanatos, I disagree with you, though I appreciate your input. Four kills could have come from town, and you're neglecting the most important thing: sharks had TWO methods of finding tigers. The role cop, and failed kills. The sharks had the most information about the set-up from the start.

He got to find things and use them in the same night, but there was no guarantee that he would find them. He had at least 3 unsuccessful searches, and was lucky to have as many successful searches as he did.

If town had been overpowered, that would be a good nerf, but it wasn't. Like I said, the original role isn't based on an inventor, but a JOAT.

I understand your issue with the roleblock/non-roleblock issue, but to be honest, that entire role confused me. It is not something I ever considered existing for myself, so when you asked me, I just had to make a split second decision, whereas if I'd put the role in from the beginning, I'd have triple-checked resolution with my reviewers. So, granted.

Oh, I see. The searching function was not effected by roleblocks, for mechanic and flavor reasons, but any ACTION would have been treated as usual for roleblocks. For example, if someone had blocked his kill, camn would just have not died. Like usual.

zMuffin was right about that; I just didn't want to give away what types of roles were in the game. I may have changed it upon review if it hadn't have been a fakeclaim, as I had reviewers poring over my PMs to catch things like that, but not my fakeclaims. *shrug*
