This is a mafia game with limited flavor. Have fun!

Rules:

1) Be nice. To me and to your fellow players.
2) Blue is my color. Please don't use it.
3) You know how to vote. Do it bolded.
4) You know how a lynch works. When the majority of the votes is on a person, he gets lynched.
5) If you don't get a majority before the deadline, that's just too bad
6) please do not break the game by artificial means, that's no fun for anyone.
7) this is a double day game. Because I don't trust you, the day will be split in two halves, one for each lynch. You'll have two weeks for a lynch, no banking no nothing.

Before going on to the rest of the stuff, I would like to bail the reviewers out. They did a stunning job and I more or less forced the fact that this had a hidden recruiting faction. None of them were too enthusiastic, so kindly don't blame them for that, I did all that.

Then, the setup. The goal here was to "fix" cult. Cult games suck and they do for a couple of reasons. I wanted to make an effort to let people experience a cult game without a couple of the bad sides, and some things worked and some things I should not have done in retrospect. Anyway, as said, cult sucks for a couple of reasons. One, town can't keep up with lynches, they remove a townie and add a scum per night, while town only removes one scum. Basically, every day/night cycle scum win even if town lynches perfectly. That sucks. This has the effect of cult taking over a game unless it's taken out quickly. The usual fix here is to make a "cult leader". This gives a very swingy game, and not a very fun one even if town wins as it's rather anticlimatic. Further, they do it while all the cult members are practically trolling to avoid having their leader in the spotlights. Nobody likes jesters, but a cult leader promotes jesterlike behaviour. The last big problem cult games has is that town could play to lose/be recruited. And that sucks.

So I used zombie as the flavour of choice, made them to only recruit once every odd night. That already slowed them down, together with the double day. Zombies would have a limit of how many there could be, having to kill off one of their own if they got over that limit. This forced the oddity that recruits (as well as empkings neighbourizer "recruit") happened at the start of the night, so that scum could discuss with 4 who to keep. Seen that that still removed a townie (even if it didn't net them another zombie), that would still be a good move for scum to make, but it would stop them from just taking over the game as classic cult could do. It also made very likely that town would see a zombie flip before day 3, to spring that at least somewhat early if people didn't think the double day + no kill + lookout to be suspicious.

I had promised Vi that I would write a flavour bit when the first zombie would flip to once more tell town that there was a recruiting faction. This all had to make sure that people wouldn't find out too late (because nobody likes "surprise, cult!" games).

I'm more or less happy with how that all went, town figured out a lot, lynched a couple scum. The last fix was, uhm, bad.

I didn't tell you this game was bastard. Well it is. I'm with Thor that recruiting factions aren't bastard per sé, just that they suck. I tried my best there. I believe that lying to a player makes the game bastard.

In an attempt to fix the last problem cult has (town not playing to win, but playing to be recruited, or town feeling their efforts were wasted once recruited), I devised a hidden scoring system. Town would get points for being on a scum wagon when it mattered (at the moment of a lynch), while scum would score for mislynches. Scum could know this, they are the faction that's supposed to know stuff, but I wanted it obscured for town, I didn't want to give too much of the setup away. The fake VT has to be seen in that light, I wanted people to feel cool about that etc, to really go for that objective, that hidden power. This was what should have given me the reason to advertise the game as bastard, but I didn't. I feared it would make it obvious straight away that the game was cult, and I wanted town to feel cool about figuring that out and battling the evil people.

Well, I found out very quickly that I was in over my head with that little lie. Bastard setups aren't my thing, and it created a huge mess in thread. I've got a couple of PM's from Hoopla where she's very nice, but telling me it might not have been such a great idea. She was very right, in retrospect, it was terrible.

Then the last thing, my reviewers already warned me and I was well aware that people would still hate being in a setup like this. Cult's are scary to deal with. Maybe when you see the zombie QT, you'll see that there were moments that they were just as anxious about it all. Those were the moments where I really liked how things worked out, both sides being under pressure.

I expected replacements just because it was cult, and I got them. As a mod I can't control the signups completely, but believe me, I tried. There were a couple that slipped through the nets there, and a couple I warned that this might not be the game for them. Hoopla signed up late and I couldn't contact her in the next two days, so if you wondered why it took so long to set up: that was it. Rather quickly after I started with the initial drafts of this two threads in MD came up about cults. A couple of you posted there you might not mind a cult game (and some had conditions), and I asked people from there first. With the replacements (and after I ran out of people in those MD threads), I went through people who played in chkflips games, which were known cult setups. Again hoping that they wouldn't mind it as much.

At last I ran out of those, and we get to dram. I think, dram, you posted either in thread or in a pm to me when I asked you something along the lines of "oh, I'm that desperation replacement". I obviously couldn't respond on that moment but I'd like to answer now. You were on the top of my list should I ever have a more themed game. You inned in the 50p game and you were obviously disappointed you got VT in a very boring setup. I hoped I could make it up a bit with this setup which was further out there, so when I ran out of people who I knew had previously been non-negative about cult, I got to you. I hope you aren't too annoyed again with me

Every town has the last two lines. The hidden power is fake. They get a score based on how often they were right at the end of the day, making that at the end of the game they can say they achieved stuff as town, even if they were recruited.

To compare, scum gets scored based on every mislynch that is achieved (whether you are on it or not). In the end it doesn't matter, it's just a trick to make sure everybody tries their best for their current allignment, and gets rewarded for that, and the moment they switch, they stop playing like town and try their hardest to win with you, the zombies, to improve their score further.

Balance wise, no. I wanted town to feel good about figuring that out, and give them enough time to do it in. I thought it would become obvious at the last moment on day 3, and that would give them two days where there was only 1 recruited scum and two originals. Even if town thought they were playing against normal mafia and the doc had blocked a kill, their scumhunting wouldn't be too far off to hurt them yet. I hoped that the fun of finding out how the game worked would outweigh the fact that it was a hidden cultlike thing. I guess I was wrong there

I haven't got the faintest clue! I went into sitechat asking for a backup mod, telling them that they could make up the title of the game (because I couldn't think of any that wasn't boring or that didn't give away the zombie nature of the game). Venmar came up with this. It felt like some in-joke with another sitechat participant at that time, but I have no clue what it means.

@Myk - the more I think about this the more frustrating it is, why didn't you call the Zombies Cult? You basically hid that they were Cult in their fluff and I was literally debating people about whether it even meant that there was Cult. Heck, aprt way through I started to debate if it meant there was Cult myself - it really should have been a clearer Cult thing, and the 'people touched' part actually helped contribute to some mislynches because of theory infection of targeting PRs. I think that helped hurt town in an already anti-town setup.

The reason was basically because they were intended to be different from cult. I think if I flip them as cult people are going to look for a cult leader, are going to feel more lost then otherwise after a couple of mislynches. I wanted to avoid that.

As for it being an anti town setup... Okay, maybe you lynch a couple of people you get paranoid about. 2? 3? Town mislynched 8 people here, and during the making of the setup we were already rather liberal with giving mislynches. Cults mess with people's heads, that's why this was a double day setup where going towards endgame the effect that cult tend to get the stronger townies (this was mentioned in one of the MD threads, I think. Might have been fonz) should have been less pronounced as up till this point they just got 2 opportunities to pick out a townie and make them theirs. There were still strong townies left in endgame, people who had been strong in their analysis. You don't know which, but you perhaps have the people to find it out with. Compared to a normal game, town got all the tools to pick who they wanted in endgame.

Knowing what cults do, We really pushed the setup towards what felt very townsided, hoping that that could balance out the couple of mislynches paranoia would cause.

And even then, I was pretty much praying the last day that you'd finally get Iece (and it looked like that for the longest time, that he'd finally be strung up), maybe get molla via associative tells the next day and get a 66% chance at winning after that. You'd still say I suck, because that last scum actually would have just changed allignment and that sucks. But the fact that Iece managed to get out of it and even more, scum abused the towns paranoia for that mislynch makes this game seem completely bad. They also simply played rather well.

Further, well there were a couple of other things that could have gone differently. Matt's replace out hurt town a bit. At that point he had scum figured out, and they saw little way of getting to the next recruit. Right after the Hoopla lynch, town really had everything going for them. I was rather sad to see him go. And I talked with mollie post game, you two do not help towns. I tried to explain it to mollie, and I guess you already know: those pages of discussion flooded other people out. I replaced mollie in a little before matt replaced out, I think so it's around the same time that town really has the momentum. You two are nice people, but if you meet next game again... think of the children

I know you both meant well and had fun, but it might have been a bit too much.

After that, idk, scum settled, people looked away from them, they got to breath again. But town got close
