, surveying his crew. Everywhere he could see sailors busying themselves, running hither and thither, swabbing and splicing, preparing the Ship for its next engagement. Teach felt that thrill of excitement that he always felt, anticipating the plunder and murder that he would and his crew would shortly be wreaking.

Teach (known to those who feared him as "Blackbeard"), turned to his first mate, to give him the final orders. But as he opened his mouth, before he could make a noise, he heard a rushing sound. He and the mate both stopped to listen. Suddenly they were both blindedby a bright light, and deafened by a huge pop. And then Blackbeard was gone...

The Borneo Jungle, September 13, 1975

-- GI Joe circled his opponent warily. In his hand, he held the knife. He had recovered from the body of the guard he killed, when he escaped from his cell, some 40 metres below this room. Now he would do battle with one of his most implacable foes. Because facing him was the deadly Kamakura, wielding his fearsome katana.

And then the concentration of both men was broken by a strange rushing sound that appeared to be coming from the floor directly below where Kamakura was standing. Suddenly GI Joe was stunned but a bright light and huge popping sound, which blinded him and deafened him. As his vision slowly returned, he realised that Kamakura had vanished...

Echo Base, Hoth, 3ABY

-- Commander Skywalker was just finishing the preflight checks on his T-47 Snowspeeder. Everything seemed to check out, so he flicked open the intercomm to ask for the base's shields to be raised for take-off.

In the Echo Base control tower, the duty officer was Mel Kergot. He heard Commander Skywalker's communications channel open, but instead of hearing the Commander's voice, all heard was a rushing sound, followed by a loud pop which forced him to cry out in pain and pull off his headphones. If he had been looking, he would have seen the cockpit of Skywalker's Snowspeeder briefly illuminated by a bright, white light.

As he recovered composure, Kergot tried to restore communications, but he could get no response from Commander Skywalker. So he ordered an engineer in the hangar to check the Snowspeeder. As the engineer opened the cockpit from the outside he saw in the pilot's seat... Nothing.

The Stooferdome, January 20, 2008

-- Mr Stoofer looked at the figures appearing out of thin air in the arena. Each of them was slowly regaining their sight and their hearing after their ordeal. He seemed to think that there was nothing unusual in the mere fact that people were appearing out of thin air. But something

was

wrong. There were the Pirates, and there were the Ninjas, just as he had planned. But Luke Skywalker wasn't supposed to be here, and as for the rest... Mr Stoofer was sure that he had calibrated the machine with all due precision. But plainly it had brought to his battle arena more individuals than he had wanted. Oh well...

"I think you all know why you are here," said Mr Stoofer in a loud voice. "Today we finally resolve the most important question in the history of human history. So let battle commence!"

Down on the floor of the arena, for the most part, confusion reigned. A number of those who had suddenly appeared in the arena had, in fact, no idea why they were there. They just wanted to get home. But others -- some bearded, others dressed all in black -- began organising themselves for a fight. And nobody could help but notice that some people seem to have been killed almost as soon as they had appeared.

Yeah, I figure this game will be a bit of a mindfuck. I'm just not sure what the twist is yet.

Haiku=ninja? Although it seems too obvious.

The way I see it, there are three 'teams'- pirates, ninjas, and town, with a few possible people with alternate win conditions. There's probably a pirate cop and doc, as well as a ninja cop and doc- a fact supported by DGB's role. I'd also expect some kind of weapons dealer. Also, Thok, Guardian typically writes Haiku in early days- it's not a PR.
