from the other thread: basically thisIn post 3586, Cheetory6 wrote:Think maybe people feel like the humour doesn't really work for the movie though?
Reck's point is moreso that the humour is showing up in places that messes with how you're supposed to feel during scenes. I think cumulatively that is kind of a big problem with the movie and Aero might be right that it's there specifically because of a portion of the target audience being younger.
yes, there was humor in the OT, but it was limited and peppered in to provide some lightheartedness. it wasn't every single character.
and in the OT we still had plenty of time for huge moments to live and breathe on their own. Obi-Wan's sacrifice, Luke's trench run, Hoth assault and rebellion defeat, Vader's big reveal, Lando's betrayal, carbonite, the final duel between Vader/Luke/Palpatine
so far the only moments from the ST i can say landed were....Rey ripping the lightsaber from Kylo in TFA, hyperspace kamikaze, Kylo/Rey teaming up....that's itgreen shirt thursdays-

What I hoped they were doing was making it so Rey/Kylo just say "fuck this First Order vs Resistance shit" and start something new. I didn't necessarily want Rey to go bad -- I think that wouldn't be in character. But the idea of both of them agreeing to work together, sure that one can change the other...is really interesting. In post 110, Firebringer wrote:Stop instigating reck or you will get a penalty and it will cost you 2 minutes in the pentalty box.
Back to Star Wars:
Does anyone wish they had changed it so Rey actually joined Kylo to dark side and good guys were just without force users?green shirt thursdays-

idk i hated rogue one basically because it felt like a 2D video game sidequest to recruit party members the whole time and then none of them grow or change
also that video zor posted
i rewatched the prequel trilogy in anticipation of The Last Jedi
honestly the most shocking thing was... despite it being silly and having too much Jar Jar, at least The Phantom Menace felt like it tried something different and did a good job of world building
and it's basically a well paced movie with big setpieces in each section to keep the action moving
attack of the clones was just joyless and i'd say the bland, dull, uncharismatic "romance" between anakin/padme is worse than anything kiddie or childlike that TPM serves upgreen shirt thursdays-

I dunno, I didn't think the Gungans were particularly bad or over the top compared to any other dumb species we've seen in Star Wars. Tuskens were cool, I guess? But Jawas were dumb, Ewoks were dumb. Wookies are just giant teddy bears that speak only in growls which doesn't seem so off from "underwater frog people with an advanced society". Most of the cool Star Wars stuff with species comes from the EU anyway.
I don't mind the pod race, it's at least entertaining, even if there's no mystery as to what will happen. I think that's part of the reason the prequel movies suffer, there's never any real stakes because we know how everything's going to turn out.green shirt thursdays-

The first point was not "Who even is Darth Vader!?!?!?!"In post 222, zoraster wrote:
As the video I posted pointed out:In post 221, Ginngie wrote:If the darth Vader scene gave you no joy then i am so sorry for you
1. Why does Darth Vader, a guy who is basically not in the movie otherwise, get to end Jen Orso's movie?
2. It's filmed in this weird way that makes it seem like Vader is awesome and we're supposed to cheer him on. We just had a movie where supposedly we're supposed to care about the people who did all this stuff to help the rebellion. But the movie ends (other than Leia's "hope" thing) with Vader being badass. Like now we're supposed to cheer on this horrible embodiment of everything that the crew was giving their lives to defeat? It's so weird and inappropriate.
3. He slaughters some defenseless goons. Oh boy. That's so cool.
In reality, it's an admission from the movie that it wasn't strong enough to actually stand up on its own and some sort of fan service to get people back on board and tie the movie better into the overall series was needed even if that inclusion is ridiculous.
the first point was "This is supposed to be a self-contained narrative centering around Jyn Erso and yet the showstopping climax and finale is all centered around Vader, rendering Jyn's story obsolete"green shirt thursdays-

how about just not have him in the story??
i dunno. every scene with vader felt forced and tacked on with all the dad jokes. all, what, so we can get a scene near the end where we're supposed to be liek WOOO YEAH VADER after a grueling 2 hours of watching the rebels die one by one?
it just felt so tone deaf and felt more like a filmmaker saying "NOW LET'S PUT FUDGE BROWNIES ON TOP OF THE ICE CREAM AND DRIZZLE IT WITH CARAMEL...AND THEN LET'S ADD IN SOME FRUIT LOOPS ON TOP! AND SOME CHOCOLATE CAKE!" without realizing that it's too muchgreen shirt thursdays-

I think a lot of people have a problem with Luke because of the EU. As someone who never fucked with much of the EU, and didn't care that much when Disney made it Legends, I really loved Luke in this. Old, crotchety, and bitter. How he should be, IMO. I didn't have a problem with that. I did, however, have a problem with the final battle and Luke not showing up. It just felt kinda pointless? Felt like smoke and mirrors for the sake of smoke and mirrors just to have him die anyway. I guess they did it so there wouldn't be two movies back to back where "big bad Kylo kills OT character" but it felt pointless. Especially since, with a little tweak, Leia could've died instead and Luke could've lived on and his storyline would've made perfect sense. Had Luke not died at the end, his choice to force project himself to buy the Resistance time would've been great. Then we setup Luke as the OT member who has to help Rey stop Kylo in IX.
I definitely don't care about episode 9 as much as I should. Like, what're the stakes? Thinking back on, TFA set up all this promising foundation, which TLJ should've built upon and had us waiting to see how things conclude. But there's nothing driving the narrative forward. TLJ could've been cut by an hour and a half and stuffed with the introductory scenes in TFA and been a completely continuous movie that sets up a good franchise. Instead we have one movie left to wrap things up and I feel like nothing was added to the stakes or plots in TLJ. They're at the exact same place where they started. Why don't I feel like Hux is competent? He's a joke. What is Finn's grand arc? Because I'm pretty sure he "learned not to run" in TFA when he stood up to Kylo in the forest. Maz is there as a plot device and nothing else. Chewie is there for furniture and nostalgia. Poe's arc seems to be "hotheaded flyboy who doesn't learn anything".
Compare it to the end of ESB. The stakes had changed. After the up note of the first film, we saw Han get frozen in carbonite after getting betrayed. Leia was taken captive. Luke lost a hand and found out his enemy was his father. The Empire held the upper hand, and we wanted to know how they would get out of it this time.green shirt thursdays-

reasons i hated tlj were:
- mary poppins leia
- overuse of humor
- undercutting emotional moments with humor
- lack of momentum heading into the final movie
- the entirety of the casino planet story was pointless and added filler to a movie that didn't need it
- lack of progression for any character outside of rey/kylo
- introduction of laura dern's character to occupy screentime for no good reason
- why is captain phasma a character in this franchisegreen shirt thursdays-

ive seen a bunch of trailers but tbh now that im thinking about it, that was mostly while watching other movies...
all the reshoots
and the fact that christopher miller/phil lord were fired for trying to make the film lighthearted
and the rumored on-set acting problems of Alden Ehrenreich

i loved ANH, ESB, and TFA
i like TFA SPECIFICALLY in the context of the prequel trilogy
i dont like TLJ because it's shit at character development and plugs in too much Marvel-style humor and none of the moments lands
i dont like TLJ because it feels like nothing happens and we're at the same place we would be if the movie had never happened (or made obvious conclusions based on TFA)
btw the vast majority of the fandom hated TFA because it was a "retread". the same people that hated it for being a retread tend to be the people that like TLJ for being new & originalgreen shirt thursdays-

Black Panther was fantastic, I dunno. Loved how small and personal the story felt as opposed to OMG BIG LASER IN THE SKY that we get all the time. Loved the performances. Loved the setting. It was just a breath of fresh air.
I loved Ragnarok when I saw it. I still have a positive opinion on it but i'm not quite as hyped on it as I was when I saw it.green shirt thursdays-

how about finish their story so we don't need another trilogy in the skywalker saga
have spinoff trilogies, sure.
let rian johnson knock himself out.
i just don't see the need to keep hammering away at the skywalker saga. luke's dead. anakin's dead. leia is alive in fiction but is actually dead unless they recast her. nobody else left is a skywalker. there is zero need for an epX-XIIgreen shirt thursdays-
