Quarantine Meet (Next week? Two weeks?)

Post Post #0 (isolation #0) » Sat Apr 18, 2020 8:24 am

Post by Pine »

This global crisis has caused us all to make sacrifices, putting the health and safety of our families, communities, and ourselves over our own plans. As we isolate ourselves from one another, things can get lonely. I don't know about you all, but I sometimes crave a reason to wash my hair and put on something other than pajamas.

This pandemic looks like it isn't going away any time soon. Some states and countries are starting to relax distancing standards, but the experts are warning of a second wave. We very well may be in this for some time. While I have high hopes that the recently-proposed US meet in November will be safe and joyous, that's seven months away. At least three meets I know of have been canceled or indefinitely postponed this year.

I propose a virtual meet. Discord seems ideal for this kind of thing, as it is more equipped for large gatherings than Zoom, and a large proportion of scummers already use it. I suggest the first Saturday in May for an initial gathering, perhaps with recurring meetings on subsequent weekends. GMT 0:00 seems like the best time for the most people - Midnight or a little after for European users, early evening on the East Coast, afternoon for the West Coast, midmorning for Australia and eastern Asia.

Bring drinks if you are inclined and meet the legal prerequisites for your region - I plan to. I will need some help planning party games, though I have some ideas. As this is all virtual and no bookings or reservations are needed, all of this is flexible. Please join me in discussing what works for you and what you might like to do at such a meet.

I've edited in an interest roster and a list of suggested activities into the OP. I like the idea of setting up a Discord server for it, but I'll hold off on doing that until we're closer - MS is a forum-native community, after all.

Hopefully self-organizing activities in a quarantine meet goes more smoothly than in physical meets.
I mean, tab A goes into slot B.

Or so I've heard.

Getting hyped for this, friends! See you all in a little more than a day.

I'll be putting together a Discord server later this evening and posting an invite here.

I suppose technically it would be 5/3 GMT. I'm in the EDT timezone, so it's 8:00 PM for me.

Happy to! I think this could certainly be a weekly appointment, though every other week might be a little easier on our schedules.

I'm in. I'd also be happy to run some Jackbox games between now and then.
