I just finished watching this series in two days and I liked it a lot. I'm going to get clash of kings to pick up the story where the tv series left off.

Has anyone read the books?

Discovered the series through the TV adaptation (which is excellent, and should be running away with the Emmys this year), and have now got into the books due to not being able to wait a whole year for season two (I am aware I will have to wait much longer for books six and seven, though). Just finished A Clash of Kings and will get my hands on a copy of A Storm of Swords soon.

Love it.

The line from her that sticks out for me as being a really bizarre acting choice is in episode 3 where she tells her father she doesn't like the doll he bought her. The point of the scene (I thought) was to emphasize that Ned has trouble relating to his older daughter (e.g. based on the subsequent lines the other actors had, the contrast with the following scene with Arya leading to his decision to let her take sword lessons). But the effect was mainly that Sansa was an awful brat. I think scenes like this could be played more sympathetically.

I like Tyrion a lot even though he is sort of a bad man. He has good impulses but often doesn't act on them. I think people who only see the tv series might be fooled into thinking he isn't a bad man.

#4 - Arya continued to not impress since she's basically Mulan now *yawn*

Meh. They kind of skimmed over it in the TV series, although it was implied, but in the book I think she came out looking pretty awesome. Here she is, an 11 year old princess trapped in a city for what I think was a few weeks, she can't leave or the guards will grab her, and she survives without being noticed by dressing like a begger and killing pigons by throwing rocks at them. How many 11 year old noble girls do you think would have been able to survive that?

It's interesting, actually. There's no way Sansa could have survived the hell Arya is going through at this point without getting caught or starving or dying, and there is no way Arya could have survived the very different kind of hell Sansa is going through at this point without getting her head cut off. In a way, they're both where they need to be.

Sansa is 12 years old. Arya is 8 at the time of Game of Thrones. She said she killed a fat boy when she was 8. (Page 493, Storm of Swords)

I think Sansa's POV was the only place we saw "charming" when it comes to Joffrey. Everyone else saw him for how he was, but she saw her perfect prince, and so that's what we saw in her POV. Martin is wonderful at shaping the POVs to actually affect our understanding of situations.

to do what is needed. Rules and customs, forgotten gods and obsolete laws hold more sway with Lord Stark than the peace. He is like his son Robb. Throwing away thousands of innocent lives for their precious "honor".

Renly offered Stark to take over the court by abducting the royal children with their combined household guard.

Littlefinger advised Stark to accept Joffrey as the king for the time being, until it would be time to replace him.

These alternatives were clever options for him. Instead, he chose to ask Littlefinger to bribe the City Guard into forcing the royal family out of court and hand over kingship to Stannis, which would cause rebellion and death.

Stark chose to massacre innocent lives over the succession.

Well it comes from a specific definition of need that, from these threads, I've realised you and I will never agree upon.

What needs to be done is this: hold the seven kingdoms in one piece to survive the Targaryan invasion, the Dothraki invasion, the White Walkers, R'llhor, whatever the hell threatens Westeros.

Just BTW Seacore, I respect your opinion more than you might think, I love talking about GoT and I don't mind different opinions from mine. It's a series that can be interpreted in many ways (for example I don't find any redeemable quality in Sandor, he is as bad as Lord Frey for me).

I thought the scene with him dealing with the lords of the Vale could be better, it wasn't as strategic as I would expect from him. But he's shrewd and fearless alright.

also this whole he wasn't able to do the right thing because of his honour ignores the fact he admitted to a treason he hadn't committed.

Yes, Stark decided that Stannis must have the crown, which would lead the Tyrells, Lannisters, Greyjoys and Martells to rebellion, and the seven kingdoms to war, as Littlefinger explained to him.

I liked Jacelyn. Tyrion showed in the books his intelligence by promoting the right people for each job, whether the commander of the city watch or the high septon. Look at who Cersei promoted. Aurane Waters, Harys Swyft, the high septon, etc.

The characters' entourage tell you a lot about them. I find it interesting to study how each ruler surrounded themselves in their small councils.
