if they start trying to charge a yearly subscription fee or something,
i'll just make a short and tasteful visit to the pirate bay
or maybe i'll go back to 8.1
or maybe i'll switch to ubuntu
choices it's so nice to have choices

That's actually really concerning. Microsoft must still want to profit from its OS, after all.

Can someone please convince me to switch to linux.
It would give me another way to feel different and special, but I need an actual reason.

but if window 10 became a subscription service then for a lot of people it would equate to holding their computers hostage
it just wouldn't work out

All of that can be turned off, though. Just like you can set a Windows 8 computer to start up at the desktop instead of the start screen. It just takes a little fiddling that you can leave to someone else.

I think you're sort of underestimating how much you're missing out on!
But I guess I can't really discern how much either.

I just use the search thing. Open the start menu and just start typing the name of the program I want and then press enter. Windows 8's indexing is so decent that it always returns what you're looking for; in practice this is much faster on average than storing shortcuts on the desktop.

Your method requires typing, which probably almost always takes longer than clicking a pinned taskbar icon, no matter how fast you type.

Don't think so. And you're totally underestimating the generality and preserved screen space of my method.

Also, iirc opening the control panel before Windows 8 required opening the Start Menu and then clicking an icon. Totally not tech.

knowing how to search for something in Windows 8 is essentially the same as knowing where it is
