So, someone gave an alternative right answer to a riddle I thought up some time ago*, but I forgot what it was.

I suddenly remembered this morning while walking to uni.

Woo, I became the <1500 rating chess champion in my town yesterday... I had to beat a 12 year old in the finals.

The fun thing about chess is that said 10-12 year old can actually be a lot better than you. (In my case he was approximately the same level, he won the winter pool I won the summer pool against roughly the same opponents)

Did some DIY repairs on my xbox, I've never been so happy to see a red ring of death.

(ftr a full ring ('not connected to TV') as opposed to a 3/4 ring ('critical hardware failure'))

It took me about $20 and 6 hours to repair. There are companies that do it for ~$50 in 1 hour (that is, 15 minutes work 45 minutes waiting). You can easily google/youtube guides/companies.

We don't really have any problems with flies, if we had I'm sure that would be another reason to like spiders.

I got to play crystallization robot yesterday because my supervisor broke the program directing the arm, luckily we were almost done already.

The irony was that he was just explaining that the computer was 5-6 years old and had only been shut down twice in that time.

Hell if I know. He is religious, but I don't think it's
that
fanatical.

So, in what sense is he is he closed off to logic and reasoning?

I work with protein crystals myself atm, luckily mine crystallize pretty easily... Then again, the diffraction on some of them sucks.

Crystallization robots: Screen, optimize, cross fingers... Crush all your crystals trying to scoop them up.

Your trouble comes in the mounting phase? Lucky.

Mine comes in the synthesis/crystalization phase. I often get amorphous goo or powder. Then, sometimes, I might have beautiful crystals but get byproducts of the reaction I ran instead of the product I was hoping to solve. For one series of crystals I published, I repeatedly solved lithium bromide instead of the organocuprate I intended to crystalize (I know the unit cells of all the lithium halides by heart now  ). Other annoying structures I solved: dioxane and BHT (preservative for the THF I was using).

It's a good challenge, so I guess I can't complain too much (still stings when you find out the structure you've been working on for days is really your starting material, though).

I can work with very small samples, which means I can run a lot of trials at the same time using a robot, so I can find conditions which produce good crystals without too much trouble.

It also helps that I'm studying the effects of ligands, the proteins I'm using are pretty easy to purify (yay, heme groups) and simple to crystallize.

PILATUS iirc, it was kind of funny when we were doing the diffraction, my supervisor was a bit freaked out by how fast it was (he had never worked with it before).

Could anyone who has nothing better to do (reading this thread is a pretty good indication you don't) please help us 'who is the mole' players out with a challenge?

A single post with

(or another player if you like them better) is enough.

Thank you.

I can't really imagine what it's like to be so at odds with your family, I assume this was a long time coming and yesterday was the final straw?

In post 4158, Kublai Khan wrote:I like the anti-semitism in Brandi's chart. Obviously being Jewish is such a leg up in the world. Look at what a rich and successful history they have. Plus they are all apparently racist as hell against blacks.
The whole religion thing makes no sense, because it is completely dependant on where you live.

The Jew/black Jew difference is actually somewhat relevant, because the original black Jews are Haymanot, it's similar to the Catholic-protestant division.

I just finished walking around the Netherlands with my dad. It only took 17 years.
