Hey hey everybody

I'm /in for my fifth attempt at NaNo. Two wins under my belt, so I'm trying to stay above .500 this year.

Off to a good start today, just updated my count over 5000 and more importantly got the whole of Act I drafted. Got a little headstart by writing from midnight to 2AM last night after I got out of work, and thankfully its been a slow day at the restaurant today so I've just been sitting in the office NaNoing between making my rounds. Having an actual, honest-to-god outline has been enormously helpful already. No more pantsing for me!

EDIT: My NaNo handle is Brianstorm. Writing buddies, lets be those!

I tried to write a CYOA a few years back for NaNo. It was a lot of fun but in the end I failed for lack of planning. It's very, very easy to pants your way into a nightmare of far too many open plot branches. To give up on finishing this novel, flip to page 1....

I'm beginning to suspect I've got a lot more than 50,000 words of story to write, but my goal is still a completed manuscript at the end of this month.

Who's still in it? I've fallen back to earth somewhat but happy to say I'm still on track to finish with 30,000 words as of today.

I'll be participating, but without anything resembling free time this year I doubt I'll be making it all the way to 50k. I'll either continue the piece I started last year (got 50k+ words but the novel itself is still incomplete) or be a nano rebel and write a collection of short stories.

Going full rebel this year, I've got 9 short stories on tap that run the gamut from semi-serious to completely absurd. Super short synopses below, feedback welcome!

Care Forgot
- "Eyes" lives in post-abandonment New Orleans, relegated by xer brother to filming his sociopathic exploits as the leader of the city's dominant gang. Xe would like nothing more than to join what is left of the family in Atlanta, but xe cannot abandon NOLA to xer brother, nor abandon brother to what he is becoming.

The Hero's Staycation
- [submitted for publication beginning in May 2018]

The Animal End Times Quintet
:

The Octopocalypse
- Researchers at a marine biology lab contend with strong personalities and stronger invertebrates when their octopuses undergo a social awakening.

Bearmageddon
- Humanity abandons the coast to rebuild civilization in the interior, until primeval bears awaken from their long hibernation to bring chaos and destruction.

Otterdammerung
- Isolated survivors have fortified a valley against the marauding bears, but they're in for an even bigger shock when hordes of otters dam the river to flood the humans out.

Rhinognarok
- The last known outpost of humanity is the fortress on the African plains known as Great Zimbabwe. Far from the menace of bears, otters and octopuses alike the people feel safe here. Alas, walls prove futile against a phalanx of rhinoceros.

...Krakens!
- A secret polar military base houses the last remnants of planet Earth's human population. The people live in fear of polar bearmageddon, or perhaps the orcapocalypse. The real endgame is worse than anyone imagined when krakens rise from the deep to punch through the ice and finish nature's dirty work.

Corporatopia
- The free market rules all when national armies the world over are privatized and sold to leading conglomerates. An uneasy peace comes - until the corporate takeovers begin with the Battle of Silicon Valley.

The Golden Toll
- In a world of extreme income inequality access to the political arena is truly dependent on means. The beltway is a barrier too expensive for the common people to cross until a disenfranchised generation comes together to sponsor a chosen spokesperson.

Day one - hangover recovery, saints/Giants game at the superdome, absurdly rich and delicious dinner, zero percent writing time. I'll hit the ground running... Tomorrow.

I'm participating but I have no expectation of hitting 50k this year. My job is not conducive to it. To cut out all the planning and plotting this would usually require I'm novelizing the Pathfinder campaign I ran to introduce my wife and several other novice friends to tabletop gaming a few years back. Session notes = chapter outlines. Convenient zany fun!
