The years he had both a stable locker room and a good coach. He's only had two bad years. 1 was with a completely incompetent coach and the other was a combination of fading (or not quite there yet talent) and an unstable locker room. I think calling him lucky that he "caught people by surprise" is a disservice to Kaepernick. When he had his full season where he was a top 10 passer, teams had already had 11 games of tape on the guy. Kaepernick can ball if he's set up for success. I'm just not sure SF is.

Can we all acknowledge that four games is a ridiculous ban. That's a quarter of the season. That's equivalent to a 20.5 game suspension in the NBA so let's call it 21. This is a comprehensive list of things that the NBA suspended for more than a quarter of the season: a domestic assault, a sucker punch, 2 guys involved in Malice in the Palace, 2 guys having guns in their locker, and LATRELL SPREWELL CHOKING HIS COACH. That's it. If you call it 20, you get 2 dudes with ACTUAL PEDS. Kelly Olynyk got 1 game for breaking Kevin Love's arm. Only guys in Baseball that get 40 games or more are steroid users. Brady suspension is really about sticking it to the Pats and Brady and not about justice for the not really crime.

4 games for failing 3(4?) drug tests? At least he didn't possibly maybe deflate some balls and say no to illegal search and seizure, right?

It's a small sample size, but Geno played totally fine last year to be fair. But would I expect him to be a top half starter? No. Fitz WAS a slightly better than average starter. I don't expect Fitz to have regressed and if Forte doesn't play like complete shit, Fitz should only be made better by him. Fitz is pretty underrated tbf. He played better than a number of guys who are considered tier 1 or 2 QBs last year.

Edit: HIS NAME ISN'T FUCKING FRITZ

QBs that Fitz played better than last year with comparable WRs: Bortles, Osweiler/BrokenPeytonManning, Bad Manning, Matty Ice, Aaron Rodgers, Andrew Luck.

Better DYAR and DVOA. Only real sore thumb stat that would give Rodgers the nod is INTs. Even then Fitz only had 5 more TOs then Rodgers did.

Sorry that you are wrong. Bad manning was a below average QB last year. Rodgers was a merely average one.

And yes Bad Manning as in the Manning that hasn't been Good Manning for the 16 of the last 18 years or some shit. Feel free to add Carr to the list if you want as well.

@Nero.
2 things man.

1st: Serviceable starting QBs basically come in 2 flavors. Rookie contract and 100m contract guy. Just the mere fact that Fitz is going to be a guaranteed serviceable QB that cost 4m and 4.5m less than the next 2 guys(Andy Dalton and Carson Palmer) is a victory. But add to the fact that this is ONLY a 1 year deal and ISN'T a franchise tag, it's kind of a steal.

2nd: Would you willing to bet your job and possibly your career that Geno is going to be an average to good starting QB this season? I definitely wouldn't.

I think it should be noted that even if Green is the best pass catching tight end the world has ever seen, in Haley's system he's still only gonna get 550 yards. So if his blocking contributions are significantly less than Miller's would be, it's going to be a net negative.

I wouldn't doubt it, they have a career arena back up and a 24 yo rookie (from the conference I played in during high school no less). I have faith Geno could slot right in.

On a serious note, idk why teams are so slow to cut bait on these shittos. QB is really motherfucking hard and if you can't do it after 3 years in the big time, you just can't do it. You're a shitto for life. Plain and simple man. There are unemployed guys I would 100% take over geno. Lindley, Freeman, Yates. Those guys are all various level of bad too but I'd trust all of them to not suck as bad as Geno. You gotta fill out a roster but it's tough to do that with a QB that only played a spread and can't run ANYTHING else. I'd rather go with one of the greener guys moving forward on any roster than slot a shitto like Geno. He's a dead spot. His cut-level talent. Just release him and hope Petty or Hack is the answer.

Alex Smith always kinda looked like Alex Smith though(Full disclosure : Alex Smith is from my neighborhood and played pop warner with my cousins and Bush). A guy who could be perfectly serviceable in a decent scheme and manage the game. Kurt Warner is a fair point but just because 1 bag boy goes on to have a near hall of fame career doesn't mean we should be keeping a bag boy on every roster, ya know? And what's the difference between Geno and Hack and Petty right now? They are all bag boys to me. The only true difference is Geno is a certified bag boy the other two we just speculate they are.

I'm too lazy to look the stats up, but I think Freeman was putting it all together after a couple of decent years and had his career completely torpedo'd by that shithead D coach from rutgers that got the TB job a few years back. The one that tried to cheese NYG on a kneel down and was like "NO WE PLAY HARD EVERY SNAP BLAH BLAH". If he had a different landing spot than TB, I think he would of been pretty good actually.

As far as late bloomers go, don't they normally happen after a major sport wide shift in tactics and/or a promising guy that got derailed by injuries and came back after a long lay off? I think Kurt Warner fits in one of those categories. Shaun Livingston(basketball) is kinda in both camps. I can't think of any guy in the sport I follow that really just turned it on after years of not really being able to figure it out. But I agree the examples are few and far between cause most sports don't have time to wait.

In post 123, Bella wrote:In Freeman's case, it was being traded to the Vikings and thrown in the lineup before he'd had time to learn their offence that really killed his career. He's never been any good since.

US sports with their franchise model, rookie drafts and - particularly for the NFL - lack of a real minor league system are structurally configured against late bloomers. Randy Johnson's probably the best example in US sports, and baseball has the best minor league system in US sports. It's more common (though obviously bot that common) in sports like soccer, where most of the world operates promotion/relegation systems that allow players who peak later in lower divisions climb higher and make their mark when they';d otherwise be forgotten - Jamie Vardy and Rickie Lambert are more recent examples, off the top of my head.

Some of it is also pure numbers, right? Soccer specifically has 5 major leagues, right. So "success" can be quantified a little differently. There are basically 100 GK1 spots in top level soccer, vs 32 QB1 spots in football. And it kinda goes all the way down the line. If you're in the top 300 GKs on the planet, you have a very high chance of being somewhere in the top level, where if you're in the top 300 QBs, you probably are a bag boy, and only a tenth of those guys every have any hope playing regularly. So you can be successful without successful.

One of the comments on that article was about how the bucs would call JJ to ship Mike Glennon. If I'm Jones I'm not sure I take that phone call.

Which McClain are you talking about? Rolando McClain's suspended for 10 games and doesn't even have a locker at the practice facility. Terrell McClain's played 16 games in a season once (and didn't start any of them). Claiborne's reported to have had a good camp, but I'll believe it when I see it in actual games - he's pretty much been a bust in his game action so far. The rest are a completely uninspiring bunch, and they don't have a Belichick level coach to make chicken salad out of their collection of chicken shit.
Rolando but he seems to be a man without a country? Apparently he tested positive for drank? This is bizarre

Still, when Teddy B comes back, they have a guy they can't cut and is a massive drain on the cap. Re:Texans, how much of Merculis' production is a product of playing opposite Watt though? Jackson is definitely not consistent, Wilfork is OLD, Clowned isn't who we thought he was, at least not yet. I think Texans D is a little overstated.

There was a big article a year or so back(i don't remember where), that one of the effects of the concussion fines and stuff is guys going for legs, and a bunch of receivers are actually making deals with DBs pre-game, saying "I'll pay all your fines, no knee shots".

There were a lot of head shots in that game, and there was a lot of like "head shot gamesmanship". Von got in late a few times and like forearm smash cam in the helmet several times, And there was a lot of arm to the head tackles on stewart too.

I would like to mention the otherside of it: Cam took those head shots, hard. One was at the end of the game after he was seemingly knocked unconscious earlier in the game. I know he's the MVP, and he's important to the team in a 2 minute drive situation, but concussion protocol is supposed to be not a joke. Every time a big time player is kept in a game towards the end, despite being probably concussed, it makes concussion protocol more and more of a joke.

Also, let's not forget what exactly won the game, and not blame it solely on the headshots.

This is already in place. There are a bunch of guys in blue hats that are concussion experts, and medical personnel up in the booth that can call a medical timeout at any time. But this guys seem to be of the "fight doctor" quality. "I know you have a broken hand, but if you tell me you can fight then we'll start it up".

I saw Kenny Britt drop an easy one and it was pretty funny. Gurley is good, line is fine, receiver is an issue, but they just flat do not have an NFL QB on their roster. I feel Goff got the Sanchez treatment because there was no big name QB at the top of the draft but they need QBS at the top end because a first 10 picks of ol dl does not make money. This year looks like it can mostly be more of the same as the current crop of top guys don't look incredibly impressive.

Well that's clearly not true right. They certainly have a weakness. Their QB only threw for 103 yds and Blount had to carry the rock 24 times. They have a very clear and defined weakness. It just doesn't matter. Which is terrifying.

I don't care if he comes back and plays good. I just want him to be okay. I feel for guys like him and Blackmon. There are clearly issues there under the surface and I just wish them to be healthy and have a good life. If he can come back and pick up a couple of checks, then all the better. I didn't mean to sound like a fantasy goon or anything. Although, full disclosure: if he had announced he was going to rehab 2 days sooner, i probably would have picked up Pryor over Crowder for my prime waiver spot in the MS league.

No, they are saying the exact opposite of that by saying they are trading or cutting him two days after he's out of rehab. That's a football decision; to clear a roster spot/cap space/acquire assets. It's not a human decision. Putting him in an unstable and stressful situation days after he leaves rehab is fucked up and says everything beside "he is family and we care about his health ". But it didn't happen, so it doesn't matter what they are saying.
