I feel like blowing some really gorgeous vessels and tossing them into the sea to provide homes for octopuses. Now, that's a real life purpose.

Poor octopus shantitown off the coast of Brazil.

This one has a better view of the beach

Can a dog help you open a pickle jar??? No. Can a dog help you fetch those last olives at the bottom of the jar??? No. Can a dog help you fight a crab infestation???? No!! And what would you rather have in your Habitrail? A stupid hamster? No!

Octopuses are superior in every way.

Also, pitbulls are so lame compared to this

Hahaha I actually thought about telling the story about why I know this, but figured it was irrelevant. But since I've been called out as pedantic or something:

Two days before (American) thanksgiving last month, I was in the airport to fly to my parent's house on a red-eye (i.e. around a midnight flight on the west coast that gets in in the morning on the east). I had stopped at a bar to wait for my flight, and I sat next to this woman. We talked a little and I found out she was a Marine Biologist from the University of Hawaii. Her current job is shark diving (studying sharks by actually diving with them), but she said her real love were octopuses. At some point I said something and used the word octopi. She corrected me, telling me it's not actually a word from Latin, so it's just octopuses.

Oh, and more to the quoted point: why is knowing the linguistic reason for something oh-so-much-better than memorizing off a list?
