K, kids. Seeing one complaint (and imagining others that weren't typed out), I've taken the Elvis/Ythill debate to PM.

It can, if the relationship is based on more than desperation. As I've matured I've come to learn that physical attraction is relatively unimportant compared to other aspects. Whee, what a fun thread I've been missing.

Thoughts from what I've read:

On condoms: The need for Condoms did wonders to curb some of my more promiscuous tendencies (as did getting older, I suppose). Condoms suck. Hell, one night stand sex usually sucks. Get a girlfriend. Or be prepared to assume some risk.

Most STDs are curable with a trip to the doctors and as long as you're diligent in getting checked out you shouldn't sweat a number of them (other than their stigma factor). In addition, contracting AIDs in heterosexual sex is very unlikely. Particularly if you are male, regardless of condom use. The STDs you really want to avoid - HPV and, in particular, Herpes - you're very likely to get if you are promiscuous and indiscriminate irrespective of whether you use condoms or not - because those viruses are rampant in the population but only become symptomatic in a subset of carriers. Also as skin clingers they live outside of condom range. Herpes also likes to hang out on mouths and pass via oral sex. Don't buy the HSV-1 and HSV-2 demarcation.

Overall the risks of unprotected sex are overplayed and so are the safety of condoms. Be informed, and be discriminating not just in how many partners you've had but in calculating how many and what types of partners *they* have probably had. Try to calculate how close you're getting to high transmission risk activities like promiscuous male gay sex or intravenous drug use.

On "fat chicks"While my current gf (and likely future wife) is thin, my last gf went between 170 and 200 lbs and was unquestionably hot. Head turningly hot. Hot heavy gals exist. God bless em. Frankly, a lot of guys find heavier girls a lot more attractive than they think they should, I think. I was in my mid-30s before I realised I should just chill out and like who I like, though. Insecurity is a teen and twenties thing I think.

A lot of you who don't want to date overweight girls will end up with overweight wives - much sooner than you realise (I know 40 seems like it's far far away but you'll soon see... ) . Enjoy. No seriously, enjoy. This is the mother of your children we're talking about, after all.

On "the 'fat chick / desperate chick' trap" discussion: Friends and I have debated what responsibility men have to women they don't intend to get serious with. I am on the high end of the moral scale. I've dealt with girls who said they were cool with casual when what they were really doing was sticking around in the hopes that I would change my mind. My approach has been that if I can tell that a woman isn't really cool with casual I should be firm in clarifying that things aren't going to change. Others think that's more than is required and she should be responsible for her the results of her own gambit. As I've grown older and less interested in getting laid and more interested in avoiding drama, I just cut things off quickly and directly.

As for not calling - this is a tactical choice. Not calling is shitty. Theoretically, If you want someone to go away and not like you anymore, being shitty is very effective. Sometimes being kind can actually be worse as they pine more rather than think "thank god. what an asshole." But then you've made yourself an unnecessary enemy when with a little courage and empathy you could have a new platonic friend. Don't underestimate the value not just of friendship but of minimizing your enemies in the world. You never know when or where they can reappear.

Umm... I don't remember what else I wanted to comment on. :p

That's the argument my wife makes against getting fat. She put on a little extra weight during pregnancy and learned how uncomfortable it made her, not because of how she looked, but because of how it made her physically feel. One thing she told me was that sitting on or laying on paunch was mildly painful, and she lost a lot of flexibility.
