To get South they have to go through his backyard first though. Why would he let them pass only to ride South to stop them later.

I think Westeros' best chances are holding the White Walkers at the Wall or bust; at least until Dany arrives. The Wall

is

magical and can presumably repel the White Walkers for a time until some weird magic on the part of the WW's brings it down, in which case the best chance Westeros has is preventing this from happening.

(Which makes me think one of the big CGI moments of next season will likely be the Night King exploding a portion of the wall down and then the camera panning up to show an endless horde pouring through the cracks)

-samwell's time with his parents was the most boring interlude I'd ever seen
-the hell was up with margaery giving the queen of thorns that picture of a rose? I thought it was hinting 'hey everything's chill i have a plan' but then that plan is apparently just the high sparrow promising that he'll let loras go if he confesses?
-Brienne and Bronn are still the best characters. though Brienne didn't actually do a ton since meeting up with sansa this season considering jamie just convinced edmure to handle everything for him on his own.
-dany plot was pretty much all fine. not like especially amazing or surprising or anything, but fine, sure, get on with it. asha/yara was great in the scene with her and the other scene on the way to dany earlier and has been great pretty much all season, and the greyjoy+targaryen alliance should be pretty cool to watch next season.

Spoiler: deaths ahoy

got spoiled that Ramsey would die *somehow*, but the battle was done well enough that I thought at one point that Jon might just suicide charge into him and the boltons might hold and win overall. would have loved for the showwriters to just be like 'SURPRISE giants are awesome he kicks half the army's ass by himself and lives' but I guess just continuing the vale/littlefinger plot is fine too. The battle in general was pretty damn great.

Arya surviving the first few stabs by the other assassin is kinda dumb but I can see it as barely excusable if you assume that the other assassin wants to play with her and make her live in fear for a while before finishing her off. Still would have made more sense to poison the blade and draw it out that way but killing the assassin by cutting out the light and using Arya's training against her was clever.

Tommen offing himself was the most surprising thing in the last episode, I think it could have been done to be a little more fleshed out but they wanted the surprise to be an absolute shock so *shrug*.
Cersei trying to save Margarey would have made sense to try and keep Tommen happy but Cersei's never been great at making good decisions so this is fine too. and prophecy's and all that noise so sure whatever.

Oh, and the queen of thorns telling all the sand snakes to stop being annoying children and shut the fuck up was greeeaaaaat

Tyrion: Tyrion says 'I believe in you Dany, be my queen'. Dany says 'sure, you can be my pet, here's a scout's badge'. Tyrion and Dany both act as if a tremendous moment of dramatic realization has just taken place. So, Tyrion Lannister - the midget who shot his father in the guts while he was taking a crap - is now cured from cynicism because of Dany's magic boobs and will be from now on rooting for dragons and horse people with a straight face. Yeah. Right. Doesn't it grate you at least a little (a lot) to discover six seasons in that all you've ever been, really, is a sad little boy who wants a pat on the back for a job well done. Weren't you supposed to have outgrown that by killing your father. Will I be cheering for the bitch when Cersei cut your tongue and make you watch her eat it. Yes.

Dany: As much as it pains my staunch feminist inner child who rooted for the blond girl in Sucker Punch, I just can't root for you. There is a total amount of sub-zero dramatic tension in your entire plot. All you get is crowning moments of awesomeness, with bonus dragons, one after another. At least Misandei (???name) or NoDick, or both, should have died during your absence. But no. The scene where you return to the ziggurat, it was just plain ridiculous. We all knew you were coming back, why bother with the waste of screen time. Then the negotiation for terms of surrender scene. Yeah, we haven't seen that one before. Clearly you've got the curse of cliché awesomeness on you and I fear it's lethal.

Jon: You are kind of a badass now, I guess. But sorry, it's just no amount of determined hero frowns can convinced me that you aren't a bore. I hope Sansa put poison in your vegan-soup (because if anyone is vegan in that show it's gotta be Jon Snow) just for the lulz. You are still better than Dany though.

Arya: Alright, I see where this is going. You and the Hound (the one with the burnt face, right?), you guys gonna meet again. Hopefully to make truce and have a philosophical discussion about the vanity of it all. Then retire in the deep forest of Sherwood to built a rustic utopia. With treehouses.

I'm feeling meh about this entire season. The only thing that was developed plot wise was the Jon Snow storyline (and by extension the Sansa one). Everything else feel very filler-ish. I mean Cersei is literally in the same position as just after Joffrey's death. Same for the Greyjoy. I definitively think Martin is a better writer.

Necroing because I got season 6 as a box set for Christmas, and, while I had relentlessly spoilered myself to keep up with my friends who have sufficient bandwidth for streaming / pirating (thanks YouTube! / Wikipedia), somehow hubby was completely unspoilered about the whole R+L = J thing.

What did you think was crap about Dance? I think each book has its strengths and flaws.

it suffered from following less interesting stories than Feast. Apart from Jon Connington, Asha, Arya and Davos most of the characters (even Tyrion) were kind of meh. feast had consistently enthralling POVs and it felt like dance was telling the stories that needed to be told rather than were enjoyable. It has Jon Snow, Dany and Tyrion all at their most boring points simultaneously (tyrion's was enjoyable for character but less so in terms of readability). i still really liked both though.

Maybe I have spent too much time in fandom analysis of Feast-dance, but I feel that Dance is a book that really benefits of a re-read -- it has some really underappreciated parables, such as Quentyn and Victarion. I do agree that it is a much heavier read than even feast, but I would not call it crap.
