The silver ring is just a cover btw this fit under it. You are right that the square one if for the newer models.

As long as there's no new(?) software on your computer you should be able to just swap hard drives with a newer model. But I respect the hell out of anyone that remembers 7 years is NOT a reasonable time frame to get something replaced.

Thanks for the input guys
I've taken it to a reputable computre repair shop. They ordered a new power jack according to the internets, but after they cracked my laptop open they found out the cable was too long and housing a wee bit too large. So theyve reordered by part number and hopefully everything will be hunky dory by tues/wed when the part arrives.

but it has all my software on it :(
and all of those programs have gone to subscription models, then i will need to get some lube
That should make it easier to move stuff over to a new computer and not harder in most cases I believe. If they don't work with you on moving software to a new machine the subscription fees stop rolling in after you get frustrated.

those make life so much easier when you have to give presentations regularly
I have a laptop that's a few years old that has a VGA port. Regardless USB is really a beautiful thing. https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss ... ga+adapter

Not to say that you should replace your laptop just cause it's 7 years old, but don't let the above reasons stop you from doing so.

So I got the laptop back from the shop and the DC port is working
Now I need to fix the WiFi, USB and sound, all of which stopped working after getting it home.
Yippee!
