Obliterated computer help
So I dropped a bowl on my laptop directly onto the keyboard last night. a few moments after that the fan started running at the highest rate and the system shut down, presumably to prevent overheating.
Now anytime I reboot, the fan goes crazy and the computer will shut itself down before login can be completed.
I'm pretty sure this means that I have dislodged the connection from the heatsink and some important bit, but I just wanted to double check with someone who might know something about this. I'm hoping something like this can be remedied by a professional.- Oman

You make it sounnd like you dropped a bowl on it on purpose.“Leftover lady, let alone the strongest to be subdued.

Eh a lot of stuff could have been broken. You are right to think its shutting down to prevent overheating. Worst comes to worst its easy enough to jsut remove your hard drive to salvage the data if everything else is borked, but its unlikely that you'll need to. Take it to a professional.Taking a break from the site.- Korts

If you're going to take it in for warranty repair (which is good) I'd second pulling the HD out and getting your data backed up.
You'd be surprised how many OOOPS moments warranty repairers have and all your data is poof'd- shaft.ed

They couldnt even service it as we are in the "Europe Region" and the laptop is in the "USA Region"
Now I have to ship it to the US for service
Also they have no record whatsoever of me purchasing their laptop, or of themselves ever producing it. So first they have to conduct an "investigation" to make sure that I did indeed buy a laptop from them.
I'm not sure that I can take out the HD. I think cracking it open voids he warranty. I really only have one important file I really dont want to lose. Rest would be so bad.
Also, too I destroyed another computer today. Using one at work and its power supply died. I'm calling this the D3 curse. Afraid to purchase the game now- Zachrulez

Good theory. If the warranty place wants to give you hell, I'd recommend having a local computer shop look at it. Most will give it a once-over for a small flat rate, and at least around here, they will apply the cost of that hour toward fixing it if they find something. It probably IS something small.Retired as of October 2014.- quadz08

yeah there was no liquid involved, just physical violenceIn post 11, Zachrulez wrote:So was it just the bowl that hit it, or was there liquid in the bowl that got into the keyboard as well?

The local place isnt a bad idea. I should have asked the Vaio store if they would look at it if I paid instead of going for the warranty. Sony doesnt even have a record of my purchase anyway.
I'm pretty sure shipping the thing back to the States is going to cost more than a repair, and it's an extra month without the computer.- shaft.ed

So this trusty laptop has existed for another 5 years, but the DC connection is borked and is getting more and more finicky to charge. I've read that there is meant to be a magic plastic sleeve in the DC port, but this often breaks off of Sony laptops and the entire DC adapter needs to be replaced. But I'm really not sure which I need to purchase as this is now a 7 year old laptop.
Laptop looks like this:
You can see the power port on the side, the shiny metal ring.
But whenever i google model appropriate (VPCZ1290X) DC adapters i get something square like this:
I'm worried maybe the model evolved over the years and now I have a version that is quite difficult to get parts for.
Other option would be jerry-rigging the port. I think what is missing is ground contact. (There are two prongs in the port that hug a pin in the cable. The pin is housed inside a metal cylinder that i presume contacts a ground on the internal wall of the port). I've watched some home-made glue gun repairs of Vaio power ports (which seem to suck btw) and they recommend pulling and bending on the ground, but I think the ground on my port is basically glued to the internal wall of the port.
