Poetry (FWAN split)

There once was a scummer named Pine.
He hung out outdoors all the time.
He took his kid fishing,
after hours of wishing,
his son pulled up a catch on his line.
I'll explain it to you. You have to get someone else to understand it for you.

Actually, that was my dad taking me fishing, 24-odd years ago.

Also, limericks are among the lowest and most vulgar forms of poetry, if they even can be called such.

William Wordsworth, the greatest poet of the Romantic era, described true poetry as "the spontaneous overflow of powerful emotions recollected in tranquility," and the beauty of nature provides both.

I think the best inspiration I've ever had for writing poetry came from biking back from class. It started raining, and I was listening to a really chilled out song on my ipod. Suddenly I was all POEM BITCHES and it was sweet.

My best poetry (wrote it for an english class. I'm an awful writer) came sitting in my room listening to The Wall on vinyl and drinking tea. First real nice day of spring, had my windows open. Ended up with a high 80 on the assignment, so I'd say it helped.

If by best you mean most kitschy. There is no tension, no drama in love. You need emotional suffering, you need pain, you need high stakes and hopelessness for a captivating atmosphere.

I'm pretty sure I have. Love poems are generally not interesting to anyone but the poet and the target of their admiration.

Now, unrequited love is another genre completely. There's plenty of tension and pain in that.

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date.
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st;
Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st:
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

------

You more or less have to have lived loveless not to be moved by a heartfelt reading of that. Or a sociopath, either/or.

Yeah I find for the most part angsty poems are not only easier to write well than loving poems (for myself anyway), but they're more interesting to read as well.

And I spent all of last semester reading a shitton of poetry for multiple classes so I have fresh experience, as it were.
Engineers accepted the word “planetary” in its epicyclic sense, but I was always conscious that it also meant “wandering,” “erratic.”

Compassion, Common Sense, and Context should always go together.

I intend to like angsty / edgy poetry better than lovey poetry too.

Except Neruda. Holy shit Neruda.

@Pine: Sheer brilliance.

I think Browning takes the cake though for best poet, even over Shakespeare.

Combines the angst that nora was talking about, plus the sheer admiration of love.

Then again, if you want angst, read Kierkegaard. His whole life is one epic poem. I'd recommend reading his poems about Regine + semi-fiction written from her perspective.

For my money, I prefer the subtle criticism of our consumerist culture as portrayed in "Material" by M.L. Ciccone.
