Juggling

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Thu Aug 02, 2012 4:35 am

Many people around here into juggling? I took it up a few years ago, and I just got interested again the last week or two. I'm fooling around with 5 balls, and I can almost make 20 catches 10 times in a row (Jason Garfield calls that milestone "qualified to try juggling 5 balls as long as you can" - he's particularly hard-ass with his training routine.)

The guys doing juggling these days are up to crazy, crazy numbers - someone managed a 13-ball flash, if I remember right? A 13-ball flash is throwing and catching every ball once, in the standard pattern. To the uninitiated everything >5 balls often looks similar, but it's like jazz music: once you can do a little bit (probably if you can do 4 balls,) you can understand much more. It's fun to learn.

If they'd only replace dressage with juggling in the Olympics, we could have a lot more fun every 4 years.

I appreciate juggling as a performance art because its entirely ruined with one mistake. And that means something to me!

Yeah. 3 balls clean often looks better than 5 balls with a tiny mistake, even though the latter is a lot harder.

I think my biggest interest in juggling would come from the potential to buy a small number of oranges from the store in a very humourous way to not use a basket. Barely can keep three going at once though so its out of the question.

The problem with juggling, is that sooner or later you're guaranteed to look like an asshole trying to pick up your balls onstage. I think it's called the duck walk, and it's never dignified.
One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.

I can juggle three with very little issue. Haven't ever tried to go above that.

Yes! I tell people about looking like a duck when you pick them up. That's a reason that's there no 'Elvis' of juggling - Elvis never looked like a duck on stage.

If you're interested, you only need try juggling two balls in one hand. If you could do that in both hands at the same time, you'd be juggling 4.

This hasn't happened to me yet, I'm working on this 'trick'.

Thing is, the main reason I tried it was just because the theory behind it interested me. I enjoy figuring out how things work. Once I figured out how to do three and furthermore how to do four or more if I wanted to, I kind of lost interest. Its cool and all, but not something I really want to devote practice to.

Sounds reasonable. The reward:effort ratio is godawful.
