There isn't really a thread on this, and I'd like there to be. Some of us work out daily, some sporadically, some not at all. I thought we all could use a thread to talk about ideas, tips, and get motivation from each other.

I personally THINK about working out far more than I actually get off my ass and do it. I imagine running or biking several times a day and then just sit there online instead. I try to force myself to do a few minutes of squats/lunges and arm exercises (with a 5lb weight) every day, I always park far away when I go somewhere, and I eat mostly fruit and raw veggies when possible. I've always had issues with dehydration, so I try to drink as close to a 3L pitcher of water a day as I can (sometimes I go over, sometimes I don't get halfway there).

My problem with working out is that I HATE working out. I love playing, and as a kid had no problem keeping in shape. But adults just don't play. I enjoy tennis, or bowling, or hiking, or kayaking, etc. but it's hard to do most of those things by yourself and people always give me lip service about wanting to do that kind of thing but never actually make the plans. (Hoping to change that this year at my new school.) I've done many things to trick myself into working out. I had a crossbow system (never used it), a trampoline (never used it), an elliptical for my poor joints (never use it). I did actually use my exercise bike until I sold it because I wasn't using it anymore, and I've had one of those thigh isolators by Body by Jake (never used it) and resistance bands (use them occasionally). I have rollerblades, a bike, tennis and badminton equipment, and I never use them either. I have a tennis court/volleyball court, two swimming pools, and a gym at my apartment complex (never use them), and the beach is nearby (never go there). I've done programs (beachbody is a great company) but they get boring or they hurt my joints or I just don't feel like doing it because I have zero motivation because I'm a lazy, depressed motherfucker with no willpower.

I'm hoping to start riding my bike to school, I'm hoping to find someone to play tennis with, and I'm hoping to start visiting the roller rink weekly if possible (it's just easier than blading on the roads). I'm thinking of trying Insanity, though I know it will kill my knees and ankles, because the results are just too great. Also the only workout gear you need for it is shoes, which I think I can handle.

My goals are first and foremost to be healthy, and to not be winded when I go up stairs (which is embarrassing as much as it's a danger sign). I also have some weight to lose in order to be more healthy and to have higher self-esteem. I hold myself back from doing things and from meeting new people because of my weight, and I don't want to do that anymore. I grew up skinny as hell, but once puberty hit and I stopped going to the babysitters, I sat at home watching tv and snacking all the time. I spent most of my teen years slightly chubby, then spent my 20s yoyoing back and forth between a size 6-10. Two relationships ago I drank away my emotions, and in my last relationship I ate them away. I ended up a size 16 which is dangerous and embarrassing. I'm down to a size 10 now, but I'd like to be back to a six or even lower. Honestly I just want my thighs to be more attractive and I want to be healthy and feel great about how I look.

So, that's my fitness story. What's yours?

I've lost ~50lbs this year so far. I have lots of stories I might share eventually but I won't wallpost the thread right now.

Insanity is probably not a good idea if you don't like to work out and (presumably) haven't been working out to some extent for a while. It's not really a beginner program, and you'll likely hate it and give up quickly, or even possibly injur yourself. And really its not about doing a program for a few weeks and liking the results and being like ok I did it I'm done now. It doesn't work like that. It needs to be something you can do regularly for months or years, a lifestyle change. If its weight loss you want, controlling how many calories you eat is more important than any amount or type of exercise you can do anyways. Exercise is pretty important for heart health and keeping your bones and joints and muscles strong though.

I've been trying to gain weight but I suck at staying consistent.
I might gain 4 lbs but then lose it again 3 days alter because I couldn't keep up eating the same amount :/

Tsq- I looked up the word fitness. I didn't see anything relevant that was within the last two years. Also I don't think the T+A thread really counts. It's not a community thread for motivation and assistance, which is what this thread was intended to be. I appreciate the link, but I'd rather you post something relevant in here rather than just tell me I am redundant. If you have a link to the other thread you mentioned I'd love to see it. I can't seem to find it on my own, apparently.

Brandi- if you like bananas add them to your diet, each one is about a hundred calories. You can eat a ton easily by blending them up with some frozen berries into a smoothie. Smoothies are tasty, nutritious, and will pack on the calories. If you like dates you can also blend those up with bananas and water to make something called "date-orade" which raw foodists use to get lots of calories in. They typically take in 2500-3000 cal a day so they know what's up. Also you could add more potatoes to your diet. They're a good carb that's high in calories as well.

Rhinox- that's great, I'm glad for your success! Yes, I totally agree about a lifestyle. I try to eat right, and since I do happen to hate working out, I go out of my way to add as many little bits of activity as I can. Watching tv? I can do it while hula hooping. Or doing bicep work. Or leg lifts. Etc.

I actually did day one of Insanity about an hour ago, which is the fit test. You do one every two weeks or so to track your progress. Just doing the fit test and then going to take a shower, I am still feeling out of breath. I'm not, but in my chest and stomach I'm like OH MY GOD NO and yeah. If just the test does that, I'm afraid to try the actual program. I think I'll stick with my method for now, do the fit test occasionally, and try to find a good tennis partner. That works me really well but doesn't make me feel sick after.

Count calories, bro. Count carbs to a lesser extent but controlling how much you eat is way more important for losing weight than exercise. You really don't need more than 30-60 minutes of exercise a day, depending on intensity.

Thanks. I appreciate the support. I've still got a long ways to go and the big challenge will be to not go backwards again. I'm good at losing weight I've just never been good at keeping it off.

Seraph you're 100% right but exercise is still important. People do get the wrong idea that exercise is for losing weight. Its not. Exercise is for having a healthy heart, and strong bones and joints, and for making sure your body doesn't canabolize its muscle as well as fat while its burning through its energy stores to make up for the calorie defecit you're providing while controlling your intake.

Habit is the most important thing for fitness. It sounds like you lack that part most of all as you have a general desire to do something (as you can see by the number of things you have but don't use), but you don't have the every day habit of doing it. And that's really what's necessary in the end.

Calories are the singlemost important thing for weight loss and calorie INTAKE is generally the most important part of calories. People tend to vastly overestimate the caloric burn of their exercise -- especially when it comes to every day activities like taking the stairs (maybe like... 10 calories unless you live in a skyscraper). But that said, being a certain weight doesn't make someone healthy. After a certain weight, exercise is far more important to health.

Noraaa, when you say you only eat raw veggies and fruit, what are you doing for your protein intake?

I don't eat enough calories so that's never an issue. I'm broke and I prefer raw fruits and veg.

Thanks tsq i'll check out that thread.

honestly i don't pay attn I eat lettuce or kale if i'm in the mood and it's not crazy expensive when I go shopping but. And sometimes when I'm with other people I'll eat meat. Once I run out of fruits and veggies I'm just eating pasta or rice or potatoes all month.

well, if you're serious about your fitness, you should eat enough calories, and it should be balanced, which includes both fat and protein.

Eggs are cheap and effective if you're not trying to go vegan.

I mean I went vegan but I cheat a lot but when I do I feel sick afterwards bc my body just doesn't want that shit anymore.

I know I need to up the cal and balance it but being broke I can only do so much right now. My money will improve in the next couple of months thankfully. I used to read nutrition books a lot but I don't track anything.

Track everything.

You'll be shocked how much tracking your progress helps.

There is literally like 5 threads dealing with sex and sexuality active as we speak, and countless more inactive. I think we can stand to have two threads, two years apart, dealing with topics that overlap.

I am painfully out of shape, though I'm a bit stronger than I look. I have back issues, which mean I should be swimming to strengthen muscles, and this means I should probably look up a pool once I get to the States. Restarting dance classes or getting into yoga would do wonders for my ailing flexibility.

As for food, I eat a lot of carbs and protein; I'm lucky enough that my metabolism burns through them like nobody's business. I don't usually like vegetables, but fruit, especially in the summer when it's cool and tasty, can sate most of my "omg want sugar" needs and provide vitamins (undoubtedly a nice bonus). Apples are, without a doubt, my favorite food.

Having a few months left here without much to do means I'm walking as much as possible. There is a regular improvement on my sleep hours and mood when I take the time to do long walks, and I also notice the difference in how long it takes to get tired. I'm not about to pay for a gym membership this close to going home, but over there we'll see if I can mix and match cardio, swimming and flexibility, as that are the aspects I need to work on to stay fit and not double over after three flights of steps to my apartment. >.>

Geocaching + landscape photography means I'm seeing a lot of pretty sights and getting killer legs~

My fitness regime is as followed:

1. Sleep 4 hours a night.

2. Walk everywhere.

3. Eat one meal a day, usually around 7 pm.

4. Drink fluids constantly throughout the day.

5. Ingest around 300% percent daily value of Vitamin C.

6. Do my jaw and cheek exercises in the shower every night.

Everyone still being fitnessy and healthy or did that die already with this thread?

I went for a run during my lunchbreak today. I did a couch to 5K program and actually finished it up a couple weeks ago. But I haven't made time to run since last friday so today was kinda rough. I did 3 miles but I had to walk some. Even when I run the full 5K without walking it still takes me like 37 minutes, so my pace is still kinda slow. I'm thinking about cutting back the distance a bit to work on getting used to running faster. I have a feeling losing more of the mass I'm carrying around will probably be the biggest help in getting me to run faster. I'm supposed to run in an officialish 5K race in september for my company. Hopefully I won't come in last >.>

Even though I didn't run all week before today I've still been doing my 3x a week weight lifing in the gym at work. Gotta maintain that muscle mass while I'm losing weight. Problem is I haven't actually been losing weight over the past month. Starting to get kinda frustrated about that >.>

There is an obstacle course on my birthday next year, I'm interested in it.

I'm hoping to start riding my bike halfway to school, just have to figure out where I can drop my car off since I don't want to pay the very expensive parking fees.

I was going to take a yoga class for school but all the sports classes got dropped. :<

I need to get less fat.

I cycle to work every day (around 3 and a half miles round trip), and walk around the shop as part of my job, but I need to eat better. I went a week without chocolate and it was hell, but I am such a fussy eater so I need to cut out the snacks to try to fix my eating habits.

This week has been a write off, and with it being my birthday yesterday I got given a fuckload of sweets. Once I've demolished them all, diet starts in earnest (probably)
