A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Throne Books. Spoilers)

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Wed Apr 10, 2013 8:45 am

Image

This thread is designed to be a sort of companion thread to the Show Thread. Obviously the show will come up in this thread and the books in the other thread.

This is a thread for discussing the A Song of Ice and Fire books. There's a similar thread out there that discussed the release of the latest book, but a purpose built thread seemed worthwhile. Plus, I was tired of annoying show-only watchers with spoiler tags, and I was tired of having to have conversations built entirely within spoiler tags.

So here's the rule: talk about things that have happened in the books without need for spoiler tags. Talk about the show without spoiler tags. It's a spoiler tag free love fest!

I don't know that it needs spoiler tags, but try not to be too smug about theories you found from the internet and now pass off as your own. "But we all know who Jon's real parents are. Hyuk hyuk."

So to start us off since Tierce yelled at me (in the friendliest way possible) to start a thread to talk about stupid stuff like this:

In post 1722, zoraster wrote:It does raise an interesting question though: how did the Reeds become bannermen for anyone and why are they still? They seem entirely self-sufficient and their home is literally impossible to find. They don't try to take advantage or their position or anything, and no one should want to spend much time trying to conquer them. They're essentially Switzerland.

I mean Jon's real parents are pretty obvious from Book 1 IMO -- at least one of them.

I didn't guess the speakers from Arya's eavesdrop, though -- I assumed GRRM was foreshadowing the hand of a yet-unseen faction in things (which I guess he KIND OF was, but not in the way that I thought).

I think once it's explained, it seems like a really compelling theory. But it's not one that I suspect most picked up from reading it themselves.

which speakers are you talking about? the one when she's running away? i think that's one that's meant to be correctly guessed in the way it's described, but Arya obviously wouldn't know who it was.

yeah. Just, you know. I feel bad for discussing events that make the first reading of ASOIF awesome and taking that away from you. Don't you want to experience those things for the first time when you read them?

Yes, but if you've only read up to Book 3, we're going to be spoiling up until the end of Dance. So if you don't want Dance and Feast spoiling you'd be best off out of the thread.

actually the greyjoys are definitely awesome as a whole. victarion/theon/arya all have pretty good pov's and the damphair's no areo hotah either.

i presume the reeds are bannermen because "tradition" or there's some ancient debt between the reeds and the starks and they come when the starks call. or maybe they're just nice people.

the greyjoys have some of the best "moments" in the books, but whenever I read them I feel like I'm chaffing to get at stuff that "matters"

I mean, I get that they're bannermen because of tradition. But WHY? What could the starks offer the reeds? This isn't an idle thought as the rest of the world isn't like some fantasy books where you just EXIST in a fealty setup. Feudalism was set up so that lords protected their vassals and in turn the vassals provided stuff for their Lords. Although Winterfell is bigger, the Reeds don't need squad from them.

They submitted to House Stark when Rickard Stark, King in the North, defeated the Marsh King and took his daughter as wife.

that's kind of all there is about it though which is not a very thorough explanation.

I actually loved Hotah's chapters, but that wasn't because of him.

There seemed to be a lot of Dany hate in the GoT thread, and I don't really know where it comes from. Sure, her chapters in the last couple of books haven't been as exciting as the other books, but I think she's in quite an interesting place again by the end of Dance. Tyrion's chapters tailed off during Dance, whereas I think both Dany and Jon's took an interesting turn.

Dany's chapters in ASOS were her strongest. Interesting things happaned in GOT - but her POV wasn't that interesting, if that makes sense. Her ACOK chapters were all pretty bad apart from the House of the Undying which was cool as fuck. Her Dance chapters felt like they could have been condensed - they were too many and some did feel like filler. Her last chapter in Dance was also great, though.

Tyrion's chapters were good with Ilyrio and Jon - but once he met up with Jorah/Penny was a slave they became less interesting. The Brown Ben Plumm stuff could have Tyrion at his best, though.

Jon's I thought were actually pretty good - be it the Stannis interactions, the trying to intergrate the Wildlings, or just general every day stuff they kept me interested.

I don't mind Hotah's chapters - Doran's an interesting guy. It's just...he, himself, is dull as ditchwater.

Book 5 is the only one I haven't read twice, so I think that may color me somewhat as I haven't delved into the intricacies as I have with the others. But one of my problems with the last two books is a feeling of treading water until the endish that seems to hint at awesome stuff (in this case the things I remember being the black candle and the dragons/Jon).

that'll change when victarion takes dany as a fishwife and conquers westeros on the back of a dragon and punches tommen in the face with his godhand, claiming the iron throne.

yeah he's not needed. I mean they can keep him as I guess doran needs a bg or guard but he doesn't need a lot of screen time. he can just be big + dangerous + menacing.
