I read this on Wikipedia about your processor:
On some Callisto dual core processors e.g. 555 BE, the two disabled cores can be enabled, effectively providing a quad core processor for the price of a dual core.
Might want to look into that.

We'd have to know your motherboard model to really tell you what it can support.

I'm assuming that the board has PCI Express support.

Looking at price vs performance rating, the geforce gtx 560 ti rates pretty high. That would be what I'd recommend if you don't want to spend an arm and a leg on a video card.

I currently have a 1GB Radeon HD4870

The store sells these
1GB Nvidia GeFroce GT430 for $75
1GB GeForce 210 for $49
1GB GeForce 405 for $59
2GB XFX Radeon HD5450 for $79

1GB Asus Radeon 5450 for $65
1GB XFX Radeon HD6770 for $149
1GB XFX Radeon 6870 for $179
3GB Gigabyte Radeon HD7950 for $299

They are recommending the blue one.

Are you determined to buy from this store?

Anyway, that card is going to perform well below what you seem to want out of a video card.

I also found it for 43 dollars. http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?p=X ... MgodtUcAFA (There are cheaper versions of it out there with less than 2gb of video memory as well.)

No, at this point most likely going to get it from elsewhere. But, I don't want to get something the rest of the PC can handle or do anything with.

And don't want to pay double what its worth.

Your computer will handle a newer card just fine and you will see a significant upgrade in video capability. Your machine just won't handle it as well as the newer machines out there on the market. (Which is to say a video card will perform a bit worse in your rig than it would in an i5 or an i7.) I would avoid a top of the line card for that reason, but you can definitely still benefit from a high end card.

Thanks Zach!

I'll look for something on either side of $100. I like Papa's recommendation, but the price tag on it is a little hefty.

This card is a significant upgrade over what you have, is pretty close to your price range, and should be fine with your motherboard. Also interesting is that your motherboard supports crossfire mode, which is when you plug in two graphics cards and they act in tandem. You could get another 7790 at some point and do this.

Here's some more info on your motherboard. One note from here is the CPUs that it supports - you could also upgrade your CPU if you want to get even more mileage out of this PC. I
believe
this is the max processor your board supports... I'm not sure, AMD apparently makes tens of thousands of processors and it's hard to tell. Here is a master processor list, your board should be able to handle any of the Phenom II X2, X3 or X4 processors that have AM3 listed in the socket column. Your current processor is the Phenom II X2 555. You can see a comparison of the one I linked earlier and the one you currently have here.

One thing to keep an eye on is your power supply. Make sure it has enough wattage to support any upgrades.

Ended up getting this one.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814202011

I ran Steam's Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014 and got some glitchy sections. So I then ran a downloaded tester which is supposed to put a load on it and then report statistics. I ran it for 10 minutes, and it said all was good.

Since then, no issues with heat or graphics errors.

Thanks for all the advice!!

Looking to upgrade to a new PC. Will do pre-built, but getting parts and asembling seems to get better quality for the money.

Any thoughts on the best way to research what I need?

Uses:
Games (new like Dishonored II & lots of old games)
Windows 10 (I don't know why, but it seems to give me the least grief when I try to run old games)
Typical WP, spreadsheets, light programming, etc.
Watching TV , so to speak.

Are you a ninja
There's nothing that says that a fake can't beat the real thing.

You must not imagine that for beings like you and us there can be laughter. The low men laugh, and we envy them. But for us, the higher ones, there is no laughter, only an unending vigil, purely serious, stretching on into the night.
