I disagree. Wouldn't it be better to have the voting be in a public forum?

Start a poll for each catagory and everyone would be allowed, though not required, to vote.

That's a bad idea. Then EVERYONE could vote. Including those not around for all these games.

Well, though present for all the games, I (and presumably any of the others in macros' above list) certainly wasn't in them all. Things like "Best Role" are heavily context-dependent, so I feel like it would be hard to eliminate bias toward the roles in games you were in. So I'm not sure the best way to proceed.

I don't see why you'd be any more biased by
playing
the game any more than someone just reading it mathcam. Unless it was you of course who claimed it. I really don't think that type of thing makes a difference. Seeing as how people probably won't go voting biased by accident or whatever, the only thing left is knowing you're voting or not voting someone for personal (but mafia) related reasons. Like if you lost to them in a game. The people that macros listed wouldn't go and knowingly not vote someone for these reasons. If I thought I couldn't vote fairly then I'd pull myself out. I don't think this will be necessary either because IMO, for games I didn't mod myself, I can be fair to people that I even lost to or were attacked by. I don't hold personal grudges for things like that.

I agree for the most part, that there would be no conscious bias on the part of the judges, but you can't help having memories (say, the best role claim category):

"Oh yeah, I remember when Soandso claimed BLAH...that was great. It made the game much more interesting and I had a better time because of it."

compared to

"Upon reading this game, I see that Soandso claimed BLAH. That was probably humorous for those involved."

Maybe people shouldn't judge in categories they're either nominated in
or
made nominations for.

Perhaps a private thread for the judges... unless you're going about this differently.

The big question is whether we create a panel of judges, perhaps picked from moderators, or mods and players, or just open up voting to the public. Unfortunately, I see logistical nightmare in our future if the constituency is too large.

Private thread for the judges sounds cool. So who are the judges? Maybe we ask every moderator if they want to participate? And a general call out to all players with 6+ months experience?

I think Macros was thinking more expierenced than that so that games that took place a year ago would still have equal input and the judges would have equal knowledge (hopefully) on all the games. I think links to the threads/pages where the nominatied games/events took place should be posted. A link to the nominated games and one to the page of the funny roleclaim, etc. People who nominated the choices should be responsible to post this. Then Macros (or I would if I could) can make the names of the nominated person/games links.

We've been having these threads since the beginning of mafiascum. You just never heard about it because they are
private
threads ;).

But seriously, there have been three private forums since the beginning of 2004 for Convict Mafia. They are right between "Mafia Games" and "Other Games". I can't believe you never noticed them ;).

Ok, Let's ask anyone who was here for over a year, with the possibility of making execptions, to be judges. Umm...

General call out to all VERY experienced players!
