and marriage in england was originally an entirely religious matter so clergy marrying people in secret was legal. then in the late 1600s magistrates started getting involved. that more than any broader tradition of marriage worldwide is what vonflare was talking about.

this whole conversation is odd.
Well, it's more that I know the people getting married well and I know they never set foot in churches. They have no personal relationship with any clergy and pretty much only hire them for the ceremony (usually a gesture for their parents or extended family). Then that priest usually takes a moment during someone else wedding to talk about how great God and Jesus are. To me it always comes off as a crass advertisement.
I might be alone on this so feel free to ignore my ranting.

If they brought the person in as a gesture for parents/extended family, maybe they want the guy to talk up religion as a gesture for parents/extended family too? That's been the case in several weddings I've attended.

I disagree. I think this thread brings out the TRUE person.

oh yeah i get you on this. like people who set foot in church for the first time in years to baptize their children. stupid christian normativity.
once at my moms church, once at my grandma's church (because hers did it the "right way") and one more time because my mom wanted to supercede my grandmother's last one. -__-
It was just awful having my head forced under water for such a long period of time when I already have trouble holding my breath. It was when I was really little, I think the last time was when I was 7.

That sounds super fucked up. I'm sorry you had to put up with them.

yeah this too. good family doesn't make their children pawns in their religious disagreements

I can't properly assess the tone of this post so I rate it secular/10
