it's almost like large amounts of the disagreement here is coming from cultural experiences of christmas being different in different countries causing people's attitudes to them to be different

Basically this.

The US is a super Protestant country, even in places that are not very religious, because so much of our core cultural values are rooted in Protestantism that you can't really escape it.

Who is insisting that non-celebrators of Christmas are a problem?

Oh. Then yes. They are annoyingly patronizing.

This year I explained to an old Canadian friend that doesn't follow the news that Christians feel oppressed in America. They were stunned.

Is it just me or does church service get more and more bafflingly bizarre the longer you stay away from it?

This last Christmas Eve was the first time I've been to church in several years and I was dumbstruck by just about everything. It's so foreign to me now. And

Maybe. I know I usually get annoyed whenever a priest/minister/etc starts preaching about God during a wedding ceremony.

TBF, weddings
ARE
a religious thing.

I'm not Christian but I celebrate Christmas. Can't I just like presents?
Of all tyrannies,a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Well, I guess my argument is that weddings were a religious thing. Much like Christmas.

Nowadays, from a legal standpoint, a church doesn't need to be involved at a wedding at all.

Well yeah. From my uneducated point of view marriage just seems like a legal thing to get a tax break. Traditionally marriage was more of a spiritual thing and some still do it like that. I think if you go to a wedding in a church its going to be at least a little spiritual.

The funny thing is that marriage was a pagan ritual. Celtic I believe.

There are tons of people that see marriage are a spiritual/religious binding of one's soul to each other/by the power of God. But I guess we should all ignore them 'cause you don't see it the way. :/

It was several people because they had people talk about what Christmas meant to them. Not bad, just... The Bible excerpts? The shitty Bach-era composition for hymns? Fuck all that, yo.

There was a Mendohlsson (sp) song, though. Props to him, he at least made the era interesting.

I think your intent would have been more clear if you had added a "for some" originally rather than leaving it as a blanket "are".

khan was saying that he gets annoyed whenever jesus is mentioned at a wedding. nero said that weddings are religious. he's clearly just saying that some people see it that way, and khan shouldn't be surprised or annoyed.

this whole conversation is odd.
