What's a good desktop computer brand?

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Sun Mar 16, 2014 3:41 am

Post by Egg »

And I have no idea if it's a good one or how to do much with it. It's the first one I've owned. I used to just post on here from my phone. It's an HP but that's all I know about it.

UPDATE JULY 2017: This thread is now about what brand desktop computer I should or shouldn't buy.

It's a lot more exciting than that in windows 8 if you forgo the metro screen. (Getting to the control panel from desktop view anyway.)

I am blissfully ignorant of Windows 8. I was hoping Egg had been spared that pain as well.

Unfortunately I am not. :(

I actually bought a 2nd OEM of 7 to downgrade our laptop cause I was sick of all the random things that 8 does.

I like the concept of Windows 8, especially for casual laptop users, but holy shit is the execution bad.

Does it wear a hat? If no, get your money back.
One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.

key word underlined.

But really, laptops are sorta the thing now a days. Soon you will buy an attache made specifically for it. Then you will buy an extra battery. Then you will acquire a portable mouse. Next you will wind up having an external hard drive full of nice things that you carry around everywhere you go. Next you won't have any money.

Moral of the story, toss the thing out the window before it eats your soul.

I will never understand why they couldn't have done everything they did with 8 while allowing you to retain the ability to use the thing like windows 7.

Ohh they could have. Make an option: Windows 7 mode. right when you log in, just like when Ubuntu asks you what desktop environment you want.

Windows 8 is pretty decent overall once you remove any trace of Metro from it.
You can't uninstall the Store, but remove all the other Metro apps and it just becomes Windows 7 with performance enhancements (plus), more keyboard shortcuts (plus), and a full-screen start menu (beats scrolling for 30 seconds down the all programs menu, so plus).
Fickle, cold and harsh or caring and warm
Strongly opinionated or barely invested, but a constant
You know the wind will always come back.

It's not perfect, but it worked reasonable well for me. I still gave up on 8 because an intro to windows screen popped up randomly after several boots that I couldn't figure out how to get rid of completely. (I think it was describing cloud related features, I could never describe it well enough to figure out how to find anything that would allow me to disable it.) Also because you still get some metro functionality creep in even after you completely disable the metro interface via classicshell.

laptop is starting to overheat
do I chance cracking it open and doing it myself causing irreparable harm, or do I overpay some smelly gamer to do it?
