the best way to cool down electronic equipment is with what is called a "water cooling system"

every time your laptop gets hot, submerge it in a filled bathtub (if you do this with bubbles, it doubles as cleaning!) for no less than 45 seconds

I bought a laptop with a touch screen, so I'm enduring windows 8 so I have the haptic stuff.

I've found that anytime win8 gets really stupid with the mouse/touchpad, going touch screen pretty much always gets me back to where I want to be.
Amid the pressure of great events, a general principle gives no help.

Do we then use the dryer, or hang to dry? And if the former, on what cycle?

Hang-dry, always. You don't want your laptop to shrink.

I dunno, with Windows 8, that would make it even more like a tablet.

Well, if the intention is to shrink, I recommend cold tumble cycle and then set the dryer to permanent press.

When my laptop's old cooling fan was dying and wouldn't stay on, a cooling tray with a fan gave it about 4-6 months of life, which was enough for us to save for a new one. No experience with the gel ones.

I use a fan one mostly because it does a good job of propping my laptop up and allowing it to get air vs it just sitting on the table/desk. Never tried a gel one.

Flay, it sounds like you have experience with laptops. I've worked with desktops for 90% of anything and everything I've done with computers, but I'm thinking a laptop would be more practical for me for the next 4 - 6 years. I wouldn't call myself a hardcore gamer or anything, but it would be nice if it could handle a Starcraft 2 or an FPS. I'd prefer not to get a Mac due to the fact that I think the consumer is overcharged for the brand name. If you had a budget of up to, say, $1,500, what would you be checking out?

I don't know what the requirements are for SC2, but my Lenovo laptops do everything I want them to do (graphics work being the most intensive) for about $400. I would not be surprised if you could get a decent gaming rig for $500-600. Lenovo are not lightweight, though if you're looking at it as a gaming platform you're not likely to get away with a superslim superlight model anyway (my friend who is a teacher has a very slim one he does things like AoE and CivV on though, so I may be wrong in that).

:edit: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... ame=Lenovo - Lenovo, specifically designed to be gaming laptops. I was a little conservative on price. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... emoryMax=8 as a non-gaming counterexample in the price range I was talking about. NewEgg is the bomb if you don't have a Fry's where you live.

And yes, stay away from Mac if you want gaming, or even to just eat non-Ramen meals for the next year. Fuckers are way too expensive and locked-down.

Anything in the gaming section of newegg looks like it will work fine for what you're wanting it to handle. Just a matter of how much you want to put into it for higher specs.

ASUS is another good brand to look at.
