Eurovision: The Thread

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Sat May 10, 2014 3:52 am

It's that time of year again. As is becoming disturbingly frequent these days, I'm working on Eurovision evening so I can't have a proper party around it. You lot will have to do.

For those unfamiliar with Google, the Eurovision Song Contest is the inspiration behind our own Song Contest here in GD. There's less prog rock and more batshit stupidity. And politics. Lots and lots of regional politics.

Show starts in just over four hours. I've just devised the 2014 iteration of my alternative scoring system (Quality out of 10, Insanity out of 10, Set & Costume out of 5, Cheese out of 5, 1 bonus point available for Mental Scarring, and 1 bonus point available for whatever Miscellaneous reason presents itself). Just about to go out and get some snacks. Watch it with me, mafiascum. Let's do this shit.

I want to, but I'm going to have to wait an extra 12ish hours. (silly tv isn't showing it live)

Unless there's a website I can stream which can cope with shitty Australian internet.

I guess I can help discuss the semi-finals though.

plz

(Thought Ireland should have qualified over a few of their semi finalists tbh, the song wasn't near as horrible as like...our last few years?)

Only caught the second semi final - Switzerland was probably my favourite though. It's very catchy. Austria are the favourites right? I can see why, it's a strong song + she has a good voice.

I quite liked Greece's...obviously non greek singers singing a sort of club anthem with trampolines, though.

I only have heard Sweden of the first semi final, good singer but the song is kind of boring. I'll probably be on Skype/AIm while watching it so!

I think it's streamed on the eurovision website? Not sure, though.

As is tradition, I haven't seen either of the semi-finals. I like to go in completely cold on the big night.

I go for watching the semi-finals so that I can see the 11 countries that don't make it through.

The second semi final was much better than the first, but then I don't really remember any of the songs from either (even though I just watched them last night and tonight)

I think I might have liked Hungary out of the songs from SF1, but all of SF2 had interesting stuff that managed to merge all together. (let's just say the Australian special guest song was best since it was also the last, even though I don't think it was). Actually Romania if they had ended with the long note before going into the awkward hug.

I think from the glimpses of the big 5 that were shown,
Spain
Germany (maybe France as well, since it's the "fun" song) is the only one of those I don't see scoring highly.

E: I can't even remember which of those are what, I think I'll leave it until Australian tv gets around to showing it.

eurovision.tv should have a livestream; not sure if it would work on your Internet connection. Also, the dance before Australia's entry was cringeworthy. The song itself was better than most of Semifinal 2, though.
The BBC took offense to being kicked into the north Atlantic ^_^

Also, if oddsmakers are correct, the top 5 this year:
Sweden (37/13)
Austria (10/3)
Netherlands (4/1)
Armenia (9/1)
UK (12/1)

That?
That was no mockingjay, that was a goddamned phoenix and I am so, so happy with the results (including a real nice vote spread surprise from Portugal!).

I love to make fun of Eurovision, but in the end, what this is is what I wish the Olympics stood (up) for. I'm a bit teary-eyed.

Slightly underwhelming contest overall but a good winner. I just wish France had got a shedload more points - the only country to get 10/10 on insanity from me; nobody else got more than 6. Take it less seriously, y'all!

Don't get me wrong, I love Australia, but why are they are a part of Europe.

On second thought, please them let them join the EU too so I can emigrate.

My only regret about going to Orlandomeet is that I will miss Eurovision.
