In post 92, Feirei wrote:Fuck the DH. I like it when pitchers hit. Makes it more strategical. Quite a few pitchers made it clear that they CAN hit. I seen quite a bit of sac flies from the pitcher to drive in the winning run, even from AL teams playing an NL team on the road.

Also I root for the Cardinals because they're the ones I grew up rooting for. Just like the Blues in the NHL.

Cubs are gonna start getting better. It might not be this year, but the next few years, the Pirates, Reds, Brewers, and the Redbirds will have to approach this team more cautiously than anyone else.

I can say that with the video game experience I have with MLB the show that managing a game without a DH is a lot more complicated than managing one with a DH.

Why does the designated hitter exist anyway? Is there some thought process that it creates more exciting offensively focused games?

The idea behind the DH is that pitcher usually suck at batting anyway, and games are better if the pitcher can focus on pitching and not on getting beaned.
One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.

The fact that you can't bean a pitcher back who intentionally beans one of your players in the American league is something I think is a pretty strong argument against the DH.

DH is a made up thing to score more runs since scoring is always exciting

It's a pretty huge breech of baseball etiquette to bean the pitcher under any circumstances. As I understand it, protecting your players is done by reciprocating on his.

Basically, yeah. Usually, a pitcher either bunts or gets seated. The DH was done to get around that. This has the side-effect of allowing good hitters who can't field play, so that people who would otherwise retire can be DHs (e.g. Edgar Martinez, David Ortiz). It has the additionally knock-on effect that people who become DHs are irrationally barred from the HoF, as if the DH rule were their fault specifically.

I've got to say, Manfred summed it up perfectly: he said that with the DH in the NL, we would not have had the entertainment of Bartolo Colon this season.

I think it's fine to have the two use different systems, but I think some standard should be established for the World Series instead of just basing it off which team is at home.

Well, the All-Star Game has to have something on the line, right?

What will we be calling this event? AstroGate? CardGate? HackerGate?

Anybody have any ideas?

Because that's where Luhnow went after he left St. Louis.....

Did you even read anything about this, or just look at a headline and jump to your own conclusions?

Did I see that no. Do I care no. Do I still want to know why you would endanger your team to do something stupid like this to a bad team outside of this year, yes.

Okay, you're kind of an idiot then.

The Cardinals had Luhnow's master list of passwords he used while he was with the Cardinals.
Then he went to the Astros.
Then someone was like "Hey, let's try using his same passwords on this other team."
And it worked because old people are bad at information security.

Like, please at least have a basic understanding of what's going on before you ask completely fucking stupid questions. They didn't choose the Astros because they were the Astros. They "chose" the Astros because that's where their former front office executive went, and that's the database they could access with a simple list of passwords.

(EDIT: And it wasn't to harm a bad team, it was to gain access to scouting reports, player assessments, potential trades, etc. There was a ton of competitive advantage to be gained by accessing a massive database of player information. It was for STL's gain, not HOU's loss.)

Proposal:
*Shorten regular season to 154 games.
*Lengthen Divisional Series to best of 7 and Wild Card Round to best of 3.
*Add four expansion teams, Indianapolis, Mexico City, Vancouver, and Orlando.
*Allow steroid users in the hall of fame, but remove one third of their stats.
*Stop making the all star game winners have home field advantage in the world series.
*Have players choose all star starters instead of fans.
*Reinstate Pete Rose(he should be hall of fame worthy just based on his playing stats, which he clearly wasn't trying to manipulate outcomes on.)

I wonder who will finish with more career home runs, Bryce Harper, Kris Bryant, or Mike Trout?

That's a legitimately good question. I think that it'll mostly be based on how healthy they all are each season, because we all know they're gonna be jacking them over the fence 20+ times a season for years to come. We might as well throw Joc Pederson into the mix, too.

Also, I was watching some baseball shows on tv and they were already talking about the fact that the postseason almost already has guaranteed teams. They were throwing names like the Royals, Cards, Bucs, and Cubs around (as well as a few others). But...there's still 50+ games remaining, like do you guys think those teams are pretty much guaranteed to be in the postseason, even with that many games remaining?

For some reason I like a player vote, then from there let the fans choose the starters.

pending a huge drop off by the Cards, they are in. you can probably say the same for the Royals winning the AL Central, and the Bucs winning the first playoff spot. whoever doesn't win the the NL East will fight it out with the Cubs for the second spot.

Red Sox have mercifully forced out Cherington as GM, hired Dave Dombrowski as president of baseball ops. Has his work cut out for him trying to fix that team, imo.
