Todays stage had some potential, but really mostly because it was an uphill finish. Rest of it, meh. It takes a little to get going properly :)

What a guy though, Sagan.

Well then, Sagan, eh?

I mean I know it's Cavendish and he's far from the good guy. One may even say that he's been the direct cause of an amount of other people crashing badly, but this isn't the way to enact karma...

EDIT: holy shit, they actually did it. They actually took him out of the competition. Didn't think the jury would have the balls to make a decision like that on a big name, good on them.

holy shit I cant believe that happened.

oh wow.

yeah actually no.

cav was going faster than sagan, but there was no line for either of the two.

cav tried to squeeze into an insanely narrow gap to keep on demare(as was sagan), and in this process he lost control. sagan was just holding a line and trying to keep balanced.

idunno.

this along with all the uci not really following their own rules. idunno. it feels more like just one big unfortunate sprint accident which is uh... not all that uncommon(unfortunately)

I don't think I agree:

3 seconds before the crash Sagan was in the middle of the road! Sure, he tried to find a clean lane and Démare with Cavendish in tow passed him on the right. Sure he could want Démare's wheel, and as the three of them move towards the outside, Cavendish is just to the side of Sagan the entire time. But as Démare cuts inside again, Sagan has a clean way in front of him (a second before he and cavendish actually touch)... and he still moves to the right. I think he drove Cavendish into the barriers intending him to back off. Lets give him the benefit of doubt that he didn't intend actual harm.

I really struggle to see Sagan holding a line there. As you say, the gap for Cavendish was too small, but I think Sagan made it so?

As for actually ruling on that: you are right, I didn't expect it. They do have a history of condoning more from big names (hell, Cavendish is a prime example), and Sagan is about as big as it gets then. And yeah, it's yet another sprinting accident and there are no innocents there.

Anyway, in a little I'll get to see a talkshow about todays stage and I wonder what they'll say about it. Maybe experienced people see it differently.

ok, summary of the critics opinions as I'm listening to them (one journalist, a woman that was an ex cyclist and very good at that, and an ex pro become journalist):

The stage was partially to blame: a long stage with lots of wide roads straight roads invited no escape attempt, slowing the group to a crawl, meaning when they got to the narrow and curvy finish everybody was pumped and still full of energy. It was an accident waiting to happen.

Both cyclists to blame: there was no gap. Cavendish shouldn't have gone for it. Sagan shouldn't have come off his line (even though everybody does it), it's a bad reflex to throw out your elbow even though he doesn't touch him, as per rules. It's not enough for exclusion, that would require it to be intentional. Without that, in this case, they'd argue for Sagan to be placed at the back of the group.

By extension, every sprinter is to blame, the way they go about it is so crazy that bad accidents are bound to happen.

There's been advancements since the Cavendish/Veelers incident, they are happy that at least something is said about it by the jury (even moreso about a big name) as they see this as a stain on the sport, but that he gets punished and Démare isn't for cutting accross bouhanni, where bouhanni and greipel just before collided, that feels inconsistent.

And they know better than I do!

Nadal more likely to lose next round than winning Wimbledon.

My best non murray/djok/fed guesses would be: Cilic, Tsonga, DelPo
