FIFA Discussion Thread (The Road To Russia 2018)

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Tue Jun 09, 2015 4:17 pm

Why is there not a currently-being-discussed thread about association football?

Rapinoe rocked the US match against Aus, especially her first goal.
Also really liked Bachmann's (Swiss) play against Japan in the second half.

Wish I coulda seen the Sweden/Nigeria match but I don't think Fox Sports aired it? I was keeping tabs on the game while I was at work, Nigeria coming back from a 2-0 deficit to tie 3-3? Must have been great.

Haven't seen any of today's (6/9) matches yet. Watch 'em tomorrow, I s'pose.

watched the match against Australia at the local AO bar - was less crowded than I would have hoped, but still a fair crowd, and it allowed it to not be a miserable hellhole while watching, so silver linings

Don't call it the fucking Fifa thread. Liking sport shouldn't sound so corporate.

Serbia is good. They manhandled Mexico's U20s. Should be a tough, but competitive game. Probably the most competitive one of the quarters.

also why do they use the stupid 24 -> 16 teams when going from groups to bracket play
why not just invite 32 teams?

In men's they do. In women's there isn't enough competition to field 32 competitive teams. Even with 24 teams, there are 10-0 games going on...(yes, Germany won 10-0 over Ivory Coast).

U20 is also suck

If they didnt have enough competitive teams, then why do they bother with qualifying rounds?

10-0, 8-0, 9-1 scorelines are a REGULARITY in the women's world cup. It's a rarity in the men's world cup. (I remember when Germany beat Saudi 8-0, and then Germany Brazil, but even then Germany didn't put up 8).

If you are using a one off game (Germany/Brazil) to prove a point about competitiveness that's silly. That's like saying a snowball means no global warming.

Yep, its a competition issue for women's. When there are about ten good teams, you are going to end up with a lot of lopsided games. It would be even worse if you took the teams that are the next few out and put them against the best teams out there.

Also France is going to be challenging for best in the world very soon. They are looking good and I wouldn't at all put it past them to win their group and take down Norway and then Canada

They have a real chance to win it all.

I still think they are on the low end of the realistic teams that could win. They are good but I am not sure they could make it through the gauntlet that would go something like Spain -> Germany -> USA -> Japan.

Eh, Japan isn't as strong as 4 years ago. Homare Sawa is a shell of her former self, and hardly contributes to the current Japan version. And that team 4 years ago played well beyond their talent anyway. They were a team of destiny because of the earthquake/tsunami/nuclear thing. Japan lost to USA 2-0 in a warm up right before the world cup (I went to the game in Cary, NC) and they were just meh. But they had inspiration. In the knockouts, they beat Germany for the first time ever, Sweden for the first time ever, and USA for the first time ever (actually it goes down in the official record books as a draw since it went into PKs). Full credit to them, they were a good team, but 95 times out of 100 probably would not have done as well that world cup if not for the disaster.

France made the semifinals 4 years ago as well, and have only gotten better. They are 3rd in line for me as a favorite, behind Germany and USA. France is better than Canada, England, Australia, China, Switzerland, Spain, no question in my mind, and slightly slightly above Brazil, Japan and Sweden.
