So my wife just came home and informed me she plans to quit her job tomorrow morning. That means we can sleep like semi normal human beings again, but I'm not quite sure what it means financially. We are struggling a bit right now, but only because we are saving to buy a house and because I dump so much into my retirement. Maybe I'll start working overtime? Even that won't cover her pay though. Right now, she makes almost as much as I do as far as take home.

But what happened is kind of ridiculous (on her employer's part, not hers) so let me share. She's a month or two pregnant and sleeps before work for 1-3 hours. She has to be there at 11pm and usually gets up at 10:35 (it's a 15 min drive). Well, she woke up and spent about 15 minutes throwing up. Then maybe 5 minutes stressing over how mad they're gonna be if she calls in (which she'd never done before) or if she should force herself to go in anyway. She works at a gas statio / convenience store / pizzeria. That last bit is food service, so the throwing up part makes it illegal for her to be there. So she calls in, keep in mind for the first time ever. About 15 minutes later, her district manager who oversees maybe 10 stores calls her up yelling loudly enough that I could hear the conversation. Never asked if she's feeling ok or anything. Just screaming about the position she's put him in to find coverage and threatening to fire her. Now, I get that it's frustrating to have to cover her shift last minute, but I saw the way she looked and there's no way she could be there. What the hell would they do if (God forbid) she got into an accident on the way there? Oh wait, I already know because that happened to one of her coworkers and this district manager went and picked her up at the accident scene and drove her to work without giving her the option to take a day off. So yeah, that's how that works. Well, my wife goes in the next night after throwing up and the dist the district manager apparently told the store manager that she had to apologize to my wife for the way he treated her. So he wasn't even man enough to apologize for himself. And she still got a write up for the call in (first call in ever!). This morning, the morning guy calls in so my wife was stuck there for an hour until they forced the evening guy to come in for a 12 hour shift. So obviously she came home very tired, frustrated, and overworked.

So I fully understand her position and in a way it's good because it's better for the health of my entire family. But it leaves the question: now what? We can't get by on just my pay. But I don't feel right trying to tell her find something fast. *shrug*. Working overtime feels like the best thing I can personally do right now.

Note: I fully realize I'm only posting the selfish side of things here (money), but obviously I'm supporting her emotionally and everything. I don't want you guys to think the money is all I care about here. It's just the thing that has to be figured out.

I thought you only work 2-3 really long days per week. Can't you get something on the other days?

I did that for a year or so...

#1) You get burned out working 2 jobs (was 12.5 hour shifts 3-4x/week and 2x 8 hour shifts)
#2) I dont know how it is in the USA, but my second job was only taxing me like I worked only there, so I made $20 grand, but then my tax at the end of the year was $10 grand owing.

Yeah, mixing late nights with early mornings makes it really hard to sleep when you want to. i sleep better between doubles (usually 3-5 hours) than on days I'm off but have to be up in the morning.

--------------------

Might not be able to buy a house this year like I'd planned. i live in Ny and haven't traveled this month and my bank is showing that I spent $1,000 in Chicago at liquor stores, fast food restaurants, and gas stations. A good chunk of that came from my savings because my overdraft protection starts drawing from savings once the account is negative. bank says they might be able to get some or all of my money back, but it will take two weeks. i'll be missing payments on some bills and have to pay late fees. will also struggle to pay for basics (food and gas) while I wait. so when I get the money back, I'll really need it and can't put it back in savings. that was my down payment for a house and while a decent portion of it is still there, I was barely going to be taken seriously with what I had. now, forget it. Unless a miricle happens, I'm fucked. and we're living on one paycheck as of this past week so yeah. fun times.

Whenever I'm feeling overwhelmed with work and school and getting little sleep, I just read this thread and feel better because it could be worse.

Just lost another $500 even though the bank said my card was canceled. might be time for a new bank. sucks because I've gone there for about 10 years without a single issue but how do they not catch this and then fail to fix it. probably should get the money back first but how much more will I lose if I wait?

That sucks, Canada we have protection, we get 100% back, just need to sign a piece of paper saying it wasn't you.

*shrug*

Still fighting the bank for my money. Got about two thirds of it back.

Wife is still looking for work so I'm sleeping more, but we're not in the financial shape we were in before all this.

Still looking at houses but I don't think buying this year is as realistic as she thinks/hopes.

Overall, I think I feel better now that I'm sleeping more.

Thanks for asking :D
