Which ones? Which ones are the good ones?

See I'm watching A Waltz With Bashir at this very moment. You might wanna check that out, girl.

After you're done with that check out
The Act of Killing.
, best documentary I have seen in a long time.

Now you. You tell me the documentaries and I watch them.

The hunt by Attenborough is also amazing
Mostly retired. Unless you ask or it's something interesting.

The Up! series - Chronicles the lives of some random Brits and checks in with them every 7 years.
Senna - On Ayrton Senna, a Brazilian Formula One racer. I don't care about racing at all, but really enjoyed this
The Corporation - Examines the history of the concept of a corporation. Really explains a lot about why things are the way they are today.
Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father - A real story told so well that it sends you on a rollercoaster of emotion
Exit Through the Gift Shop - I really like Banksy. And this story is exactly what a Banksy documentary should be like.
Room 237 - A controversial choice, but I loved this. A bunch of people offer esoteric interpretations as to what Kubrick's The Shining is really about.
Woodstock - Older documentaries are really different (a lot less editing for one), but this one really captures a cultural event from the inside.
Dogtown and Z-Boys - A real lesson about the earliest skateboarders and how a who subculture gets started.

Others: Jesus Camp, The Man with the Movie Camera, The Aristocrats!, March of the Penguins, Microcosmos, Cosmos, When We Were Kings, Jiro Dreams of Sushi, Comedian

I've actually been watching a documentary a night for the last few weeks. Some of my favorites from that time period were:

Somm: an examination of what it means to be a master sommelier. The doc follows several master somm candidates as they prepare for and take one of the hardest and most exclusive certification tests in existence. Peppered with great insights into the humanism of the whole thing as well as interesting facts about the history of wine and what it takes to be "the best" at it.

The Greatest Movie Ever Sold:
Morgan Spurlock of Supersize Me fame examines corporate sponsorship in the film industry by selling product placement and advertising in a documentary about product placement and advertising. I imagine it might be a little meta for some, but I really enjoyed the glimpse into how these things happen, and also looking at exactly how much control sponsors have over the movies we watch.

The Art of the Steal:
Follows the acquisition and subsequent legal theft of the Barnes Collection, one of the greatest collections of early modern and impressionist art in the world by the city of philadelphia. Focuses on power and how systems are gamed by people who have lots of money and influence.

Blackfish:
A documentary done in a murder mystery style that investigates Seaworld and their relationship with their trainers and orca whales, and how their negligence led to the death of a Trainer when a whale that should have been considered dangerous attacked. Really nice film, really interesting discussion of animal rights and how orca behavior differs between the wild and captivity. A brief warning though, this film is pretty disturbing at parts. They show graphic scenes of orca attacks on trainers through the history of the practice and if you're a bit squeamish they're a little hard to watch. (which is the point, but I wouldnt want someone to watch it without that warning.

Girl Rising! That's another good one. It's on Netflix.

Know what else is always good? The VICE documentaries. Just stuff you don't see a lot of
Peruvian Cocaine, ISIS's internal affairs, etc.

Ancient Black Ops

Although, it's more history and what people think happened it seems, only done the first episode "Assassin's".

I liked having the wiki for assassin's creed open and reading the characters that were based on real people

i lovez talking about films :3

im just going to copy paste my post on the documentary rec thread on intpf here for now bc lazy

ANNA: FROM SIX TILL EIGHTEEN(1993):

Director Nikita Mikhalkov documents the history of Russia from 1980 to 1991 by annually asking his daughter Anna such questions as “What do you love the most?”, “What scares you the most?”, “What do you want above anything” and “What do you hate the most?”
mubi review i like: "child alienation through ideology, emotional direction of the young according to the state agenda. how do you feel when you realize that your daughter is genuinely distraught by the death of the dictator and that she spies on you sniffing the slightest sign of political sabotage ?"

HIGH SCHOOL(1968):

mubi review(not by me): "The mechanisms and institutions of childhood development all conspire to do what society does: to instill deference to authority, suspicion of dissent, intolerance of idiosyncrasy, and an attitude of uniform compliance to accepted norms with the instinct to segregate and deride anyone who deviates from them. Wiseman captures every aspect of this process merely by caring to observe it."

GADAJACE GLOWY(1980):
<this one's a personal fav
15 min long, People of all ages are filmed as they are asked when they were born, what they are, and what they would like the most; the film assembles their responses with straight cuts from youngest to oldest (one to a hundred)

WINGED MIGRATION(2001):

Documentary on the migratory patterns of birds, shot over the course of three years on all seven continents.

SANS SOLEIL(1983):
another favorite
A complex journey into time and memory, Chris Marker’s mind-bending free-form travelogue roams from Africa to Japan, guided by associative editing and an unnamed narrator.

LA SOUFRIÈRE(1977):

In 1976 volcanic scientists believed that the Caribbean Island of Guadeloupe was to about to blow up with the explosive power of five or six atomic bombs. The entire town was evacuated, except one peasant who refused to leave. And of course our intrepid Herzog…

THE HISTORY OF A BUTTERFLY: A ROMANCE OF INSECT LIFE(1910):

A 1910 British short black-and-white silent documentary film showing the life-cycle of the butterfly.

TOUCHING THE VOID(2003):

The true story of two climbers and their perilous journey up the west face of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes in 1985.

THE EMPEROR'S NAKED ARMY MARCHES ON(1987):

In this landmark documentary, Kenzo Okuzaki, a veteran of Japan’s WWII campaign in New Guinea, painstakingly tracks down the former military officers responsible for the strange deaths of several of his fellow soldiers.
mubi review(not by me): "like a real-life under the flag of the rising sun, and all the more shocking for that. sometimes okuzaki veered into megalomania, but you have to respect his tenacity. i loved how he would entertain the typical customs of japanese politeness, but eventually blow up when his subjects kept using it as a shield."

Fast, Cheap, and Out of Control (1997)

Can I describe this doco? Not...really. Not to the degree it deserves. It follows four men: A topiary grower, an MIT scientist, a lion tamer, and a hairless molerat expert. It follows them and displays what they have in common, and how different they are. It's a fascinating exploration of passion, bravery, creativity. Humanity. It's a story I haven't heard told in any other medium in any other way. It's closer to a bar conversation of "yeah I had this experience at work" "Well that reminds me of this experience that I had". It's magical and strange and wonderful. And it makes me cry almost every time.

It's really fascinating look at daily life of 1910s Russia. Plus there's been a few good soundtracks that have been created for it. The original soundtrack is okay (though obviously dated), I prefer the Cinematic Orchestra one.

I've been meaning to watch Touching the Void and Fast Cheap and Out of Control. I've almost watched them a couple of times.

You'd love Fast, Cheap. Honestly I think it's a crime that you haven't watched it up to this point.
