Because if I had to guess I'd say at least a large cut (perhaps a majority) of people voting for it are voting not on the merits of the book itself but rather the franchise that has popped up around it.

Eh, I disagree. LOTR got knocked out in the Quarter-Finals last time against 1984. If anything it should have done better in 2009 than today because it was closer to when the movies had been released.

Maybe the shift from dystopia to fantasy says something about our society.
