I think you're overestimating the power that the US President has over nuclear weapons.

They can't just go "whee" and press a button and kill a thousand people. For a nuclear

strike (the first strike bit is important - if it's a retaliation to a nuclear attack, less steps must be taken), there needs to be permissions from the Secretary of Defence, and potentially the director of the CIA and the Presidential Cabinet and, well, the point is, it requires negotiation and agreement from a large group of others.

The "Nuclear Football" doesn't literally contain a button either or anything like that - it's a set of instructions on nuclear strategy and communication equipment with the military personnel who would actually carry out the strike, all stuff like that.

Nominated by Trump, yes, but presumably they'll have a considerably better understanding of politics and war and how to handle conflict. The governmental systems are designed to avoid the president gaining too much individual power - the point will be considered a lot more than you think it will be.

And maybe, but these launch codes then have to be given to the military personnel is what I'm saying - he can't just press a thing and boom nukes. But the point is that the President is entirely unable to launch a first strike alone - it requires authentication and discussion and various other steps. Nuclear war is not an option to be taken lightly, and the systems regarding it are basically made to avoid the decision being made lightly. It's not a huge worry in comparison with other, more realistic options.

I really hope that people who say "I hope Trump wins because it will be entertaining" are legally too young to vote, because if they consider the entertainment factor of a candidate to be important then they are mentally too young to vote.

CooLDoG is probably trolling, but I don't doubt that some people see it that way. What scares me marginally more than what Trump will do with his presidency is that the people who are now rallying behind his racist and xenophobic views may feel vindicated if he becomes president. It's hard enough when people know their views are socially unacceptable and resort to being covert about it.
