Monsters and Mutants

- The Slime People (1963)
Really bad B-movie. Overuse of fog only highlighted the film's weak budget instead of hiding it.

Film Noir

- Touch of Evil (1958)
The 1998 re-cut. Oh man. This is the type of great movie you get when you give someone like Orson Welles the freedom to make a movie.

Populist

- Babe (1995)
Somewhat darker than I expected. Still, the ending is handled beautifully.

Supernatural Comedy

- The Frighteners (1996)
Not much to say. Weirdly for as charismatic as he is, all the Michael J. Fox stuff is largely forgettable. Lee Emery and Jake Busey steal the scene.

Teen Terror ("Teen Screams")

- Friday the 13th (2009)
Eh. As much as I hate remakes, the original Fridays are horribly dated and it's not a bad choice to remake. But Marcus Nispel is a horrible director who doesn't need to helm these things.

Really well done. I think Zulfy recommended it. Thank you for that. Sheep scene was a great opener.

- The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)
Finally got around to finishing the pre-trilogy trilogy. It's got a few issues, but overall good.

- Heima (2007)
Good music, great shots of Iceland.

Costume Dramas

- A Room with a View (1985)
Holy crap is Daniel Day Lewis hilarious in this. Helena Bonham Carter has a really good debut I thought.

Good, but dull.

Oof. That 1950's misogyny. Musicals still aren't my cup of tea.

@kraska77 - thanks for the recommendations! Seven Samurai and Sans soleil I've seen before and probably won't revisit for this challenge. But the other movies look really interesting. I hadn't considered watching a Vietnamese movie about the Vietnam war, but that should be really interesting. And I've heard about Solaris a lot but never got around to watching it.

Great performances. Especially from Robert Duvall.

- Candy (2006)
Fuck heroin. And damn heroin movies. Fantastic performances by Heath Ledger and Abbie Cornish. But so tragic.

Heist - Caper Films

- Bonnie and Clyde (1967)
Always meant to watch this movie. Though I got caught up in the story of Clyde's brother and sister-in-law. Also, Gene fricking Wilder's debut.

Biopics (Biographical)

- Temple Grandin (2010)
Made for TV/HBO. I was caught really off-guard. This was really, really good.

BBC nature docs are just amazingly lately. Just fantastic footage.

For a schlocky horror film, it's very adeptly directed.

Combat

- Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
There's some pretty strong plot holes and a crap ending, but a good popcorn flick.

Aliens, Extra-Terrestrial Encounters

Badly structured story. Poorly paced. Just kinda silly.

I think it's mainly just an issue with both the dialogue and the performances. Like after every line of dialogue there a beat pause before the next person delivers their line. Everything just feels unnatural. Like a notch below Twin Peaks stilted awkwardness but in the same wheelhouse. I guess it can be argued that

"Oh, it because they are in the game the whole time"

but there are more subtle ways of hinting that that wouldn't annoy me the whole movie.

Yeah, it just shouldn't be a low-budget college effort when you have such a good cast. Jude Law, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Willem Dafoe, Ian Holm, Christopher Eccleston.. Just should have been so much better.

Holy fuck, Betty Davis is awesome. She pulls off an insane performance really well.

I'd seen many parts (maybe even the whole thing). Very ballsy satire of America.

Black Comedies (Dark Humor)

- Grosse Point Blank (George Armitage-1997)
There's few better mixes of romantic comedy and badass action.

- I know it's a great overcoming stereotypes and bonding movie but.. there's no consequence for five unsupervised kids causing property damage in a school library?

War-Military Dramas

- Bao gio cho den thang muoi {aka When the Tenth Month Comes} (1984-Nhat Minh Dang)
- Very moving and touching story. Very delicately done.

Lampoon

- Animal House (John Landis-1978)
- Not the greatest, but you can see where a lot of modern comedies got influenced by.

Romantic Musicals

- White Christmas (Michael Curtiz-1954)
- Predictable plot, but great dancing.
