Davsto's Top 100 Songs (Complete!)

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Tue May 24, 2016 8:21 pm

Post by Davsto »

The title says it all - I will at some point (probably tonight) make a list of my top 100 favourite songs of all time, and post a song per day (plus a link to listen obviously).

There won't be a huge variety (about 20 different artists) - expect a fair amount of Beatles and prog rock - but I just thought I'd have a go at something like this and see how it turns out. Maybe come back a year or two in the future and make a revised version and see what differences there are.

I'm aware that I will probably have a lot more songs I'm interested in my collection by the end of this, so that's why the final list will be made in advance rather than having to panic about adding songs to it as I go along.

Finished Edit - I realise that this list is already very outdated even though this is the day I finished it. It'll be nice to come back in a year or two and see just how big the change is. I've removed the "Of All Time" because it should really read "as of 25th May".

Yeah the aim isn't really to show off a wide variety, it's more for me to just see how my tastes and such now compare to how they do in the future.

EDIT - There will also be an order to an extent, to be taken with a pinch of salt because my preferences for songs vary depending on my mood, but generally I prefer more those towards the top of the list than those towards the bottom.

Intriguing. I should start compiling my mixes of different bands and post one a week, I've probably got close to 52 by now. I'll start it the first week of 2017.

And the list is compiled! I had a total of 690 songs to choose from (again, just noting this for my personal future reference :P). Each link will come with a personal gush about why I like the song, which will not be written in advance, so expect various "I wouldn't put this here now"s as the list goes on. Going from 100 to 1. Let's get this shit done.

When I Was a Boy

by the Electric Light Orchestra

ELO is probably the first band that I still regularly listen to and enjoy that I got into when I was younger - most of my other tastes have been since then - so naturally they hold a special place, and when it was announced that a new album was being released in 2015 (one day before my birthday too!) I was incredibly excited. I like the album, but honestly most of the tracks aren't really that high in terms of how much I like them - apart from this track. I liked it from when I heard it, and I've only gotten to like it more since, because it's just great.
Highlights
of this track include the classic ELO harmonies and hooks in the chorus (the high note at "when I was a boy" is by far my favourite part of the song), and the guitar solo which is simple but still nice to listen to.

(For the record, I am fully aware my tracks have flaws - but I'm definitely going to spend the majority of the time focusing on the good.)

I mean I just wanted to share it with a community where I actually fairly am aware of the people rather than on a website I don't like which is full of strangers but thanks for the comment

I mean when I said "lots of Beatles and prog rock" I wasn't kidding - I think the final count is 21 Beatles songs (not including solo McCartney, Lennon, andHarrison stuff) and 18/19 prog rock songs :P

Don't Stand So Close To Me

by The Police

(Alternate link)

Ahh, The Police. This is one of their many popular singles, this one from 1980. It's low on the list because there are definitely many better Police songs, but I still have quite a strong fondness for this one, the classic song of the teacher shagging a young girl. Maybe it would be more accurate if it were a 70s BBC star. Anyway, this particular song is when they started to move from their more traditional "pure" sound to their more poppy 80s period, and it shows - the chorus is catchy as hell but incredibly 80s, and there are synths all over the place, but this is still a great song.
Highlights
include the aforementioned catchy as hell chorus (particularly in the fade out with the "please don't stand so close to me" counterpoint melody) and the slow, dark first verse being jumped into the energetic chorus at the beginning - I've always liked that strong contrast.
