I always assumed one of the things people liked about scumchat was the exclusivity. Not that they were totally against new people, but it was a place that valued regulars over people who just wandered in now and then. Sitechat on the other hand requires enabling, but it's pretty easy just to come and go on it.

ScumChat always did a pretty good job of making sure it filtered people who'd fit in from the people who wouldn't, allowing it to keep it's character whilst enabling new blood to keep coming.

When I first joined Scumchat nobody in this thread would be a member of these forums. With the exception of UT nobody in this thread WOULD be a member for another 4 years.

It is the place where UPick was born. I'm pretty sure it was the first place I publicly came out as asexual.

I haven't gone for a number of years (I think the last time was during the 2012 elections) but I'll definitely miss it.

ScumChat was wonderful, it really allowed me to make connections with many of the people I now consider my dearest mafiascum friends.

finding out that ScumChat was dead was one of the more disappointing things about coming back here; it definitely had its flaws, but, as this thread shows, I'm not the only one with a lot of positive memories from it.

I remember popping in there way way way back in the day and playing in a "dethy" that resulted in everyone being really confused since the results were impossible in the traditional dethy setup.

:'(

Fuck man, I just legitimately got sad at work reading this. Scumchat was sort of where you guys beat the shit out of me in 2010-2011 until I stopped being as much of a hyperactive obnoxious shithead. It's where I first bridged the gap with Shea and got to know him and appreciate him. It's where the LoL squad was born and how I got to know Buttons and Shanba, who I still see on Overwatch from time to time. It's where Nuwen and I got to understand each other, stopped hating each other, and eventually became roommates. It's where I learned that some people weren't as bad as they appeared to be.

I'm going to miss it. I haven't opened AIM or Pidgin in years but I feel a real sort of emotional pang right now thinking that Scumchat is long gone. :(

Late to the party but pouring one out for a fallen hero.

Scumchat was the main reason I stuck around on the site honestly (so now you have something to blame). Even when I joined in 2007, the walls were up and guarding in there, but as soon as you got over the wall you found a community that's tough to rival on the site. It's been a long time since I've been around those parts (because installing software is hard), but the friends I got from that chat are some of the best I've had on the site.

It's where we told cay to shut up
It's where we nuked the shit out of each other playing MAD mafia
It's where we had a live shadowlurker mole final quiz where we both knew it was totally troj go us peg
WE PLAYED DUEL FOR WEEKS ON END
I had a 2 hour conversation with prozac where he kept insisting he wasn't lying down, he was SITTING SIDEWAYS

But I leave with just a word

Scumchat was where I learned how to get put in my place, much like Reck's experience. Scumchat was where I learned how to fit in with a crowd, and how the decide when not to. Scumchat was a beautiful place full of interesting people, whether that was mafia games, LoL, whatever.

Scumchat is the place that first taught me Conspiracy. A game I still love in small groups over a beer.

Scumchat was there when I was gold in Gippsland on my basic training, bored in Newcastle at the Cru, sweating to death in the middle of the Northern Territory, or on ex in some other place. Scumchat was there.

Scumchat was a caring and welcoming place that didn't tolerate bullshit. That drove a lot of people away (especially those who were still attached at the time to their bullshit), and I wonder if we'll hear from them, but those who stayed became (and remain) very fond to me.

Rip in pieces old buddy. Thanks for everything you did and everything you made me. And thanks to the many people that I won't even start to list. You were (and are) wonderful friends.

We should all fire-up our AIMs and Pidgins and schedule one last blowout in there before we let it fade away.
